Vegas would have to get rid of a contract or two to sign Marner. Karlsson should be available if that is the case and he should be dirt cheap (3rd rounder?). Jets might look at him as an option for 2C.
I very much like going after Karlsson. He’s a very good player, and can score some clutch goals. If we’re going to lose Ehlers, he would be a great replacement.

Sounds like the panthers are going to try to move some pieces around on their team so they can try to keep Marchand Bennett Ekblad, going to make Marner and Ehlers the biggest free agents. Ehlers will likely wait until Marner signs and max his earnings. Brutal.

His 10 team NTC might be an issue. Karlsson's the last remaining Vegas forward to be taken in their expansion draft. McNabb will be the lone expansion drafted guy on the team if Karlsson's moved out.

Even if Ehlers' #1 choice is returning here, his agent would be an idiot not to get offers and see what he's worth on the open market for negotiating leverage. I personally think it's more than 50% chance he stays here - especially with our results this year. He's a guy that wants to win, and his best chance may well be right here.

Depends how much he wants to be here. If he waits until July 1 to sign, then Chevy is forced into looking for a replacement as soon as the market opens

It's possible Chevy signs a guy like Boeser and Ehlers can't circle back. Even a lesser signing at, say, 4.5M (Mangiapane) wouldnt leave enough room for Nik

Nik has his offer from Chevy. If it's an 8 year deal, another team would have to really increase the AAV to exceed the total dollar value

Ehlers, Marner, and Boeser are the top three wingers hitting the market. Teams who fit the criteria for what Nik is looking for might not covet him the most. I've heard that Carolina covets Marner, but if he goes elsewhere, will they pay Ehlers more than the Jets would as their plan B? I'm not so sure

Yup, gotta think there is a drop dead date on Chevy's offer to Nik. If he doesn't accept before FA the Jets will hopefully have something lined up for someone else.

I do wonder if we see some more deals In the lead up to the draft. There might be some good players available from cap strapped teams.

I wonder if Chevy gave permission to Ehlers camp to look around and give him an answer by the draft.

To me, that would be wise

The problem is if Ehlers is Plan B for teams, what does he do? For example... Carolina. And what do they tell him at this point?

Nik might like the idea of playing there, but what if they throw enough money at Marner to land him? Are there other markets willing to pay Nik his price? Or would they pivot to a guy like Boeser, who may come in at a lower cap hit than Nik?

To me, Nik will probably be a fallback option for the teams who need a big dollar winner who don't land Marner

It'll be interesting to see it unfold

Yup and Mitch has said he may take his time touring the locations before he decides. So Fly might be sitting in Limbo for a couple of days until that plays out. At which point the secondary market is likely sparse. So if your Chevy you gotta jump on things immediately which likely pushes Nik out.

I do think Nik has already decided to move on so my guess is Chevy already has some other things in the works. I mean if Toews was all they were leaning towards they wait until July 1 for the big announcement. They got this out a week before the draft and FA for a reason.
