Please show me how Gonchar has been great over the past 20-30 games.

It appears he was a stunning -2 in a 7-3 win. He has 6 shots on goal for the entire month of March.

He is slow as hell. I have seen nothing spectacular out of Gonchar in the past two months. His ice time has been dropped consistently over the past two months too.

He's having the same problems Cole & Horcoff are having. Can hack it, but not contributing on the score sheet in any significant manner.

How is it crazy to take a risk on a kid who might contribute more? Preferably one that actually has knees left and isn't conscious of the fact that he can't shoot as much because he can't get back to defend?

I don't know. You can tell me he was a minus in a crazy big win but weird stuff happens. All I know is that when I look down on the ice and there's a defenseman with the puck who looks like he actually knows what the **** to do with it 90% of the time it's Gonchar.

I disagree outright that he's slow as hell, or that whatever lack of speed he has in any way hinders him. He's a Zubov type skater (though not as good).

In any case, we're talking PP and from what I've seen KC has a hard time getting his shot through, and those that do hardly ever produce rebounds. Gonchar's shots are typically low rebound-creating types. Give me that.

Now of course the problem then was that everyone tried to force the puck to him no matter what, but that doesn't mean that's not the right position for him. We need Seguin closer to the net as a scoring threat and someone up top who defenses respect the possibility that they might shoot and the rest of the team to be looking for Seguin as the final pass in a build-up, not the first option.

Dude at this point I'm even willing to throw him back there and just keep forcing things to him. But yeah, obviously they need to acknowledge he's not the only one there.
 
8.3% with a shorthanded goal against so far in the playoffs. 1 of the Stars' goals came on a 5 on 3 as well.
 
Chiasson is good at puck retrieval along the boards and winning it back which is a crucial component of any PP. He usually makes the right play with the puck and rarely turns it over through carelessness.
 
It's terrible and has been terrible for a long time. Only time it was even halfway acceptable was during Jagr's short stay with us last year.

Whitney has no business being anywhere near the PP

But he is not really good in front of the net which is his main job. I said it early in the season I'll stick with it, Horcoff should be the net front guy on the first unit, worked great for the Oilers (look at where their PP is this year compered last two years).
 
I'm fine with Chiasson on the 1st unit but Ray Whitney should not even be in the lineup at this point, let alone getting a ton of PP time. It's time Cole came back in and Whitney took a seat.
 
I really don't like 4 forward pp configurations. Defencemen are more confident at handling the puck and making plays at the blueline, even compared to the most skilled of forwards. Looking forward, we really need Klingberg to turn out so we can pair him with Goligoski on the pp.

Abso-****ing-lutely. I doubt he'll go back to being an assistant though, at least not right away.
 
If it's Oates then whatever, just find the best PP coach out there and slide him a blank check.
 
To be fair Tyler's shot isn't far from Ovechkin's. The personnel are a little different but this squad has talent. Just need to find the right combo and someone tell Chiasson to spend his entire offseason shooting at a goalie.

Oates isn't going to find another head gig right now. He kinda needs to rebuild his rep and a shot at fixing our abysmal power play could only help that. It also keeps him in the NHL which should be a priority as well.
 
I wouldn't eliminate Oates as a possibility. Many head coaches go back to being assistants. Fraser is one.

I agree it's time to move on. It's not all his fault, but two awful years is enough. I'd throw a little extra cash than normal to convince Oates to be an assistant if he can't get a head coach job.
 
with oates, is it at all a concern that he may have a gretzky-like coaching effect (or magic johnson-like basketball effect)? oates sees the ice so well that can't be replicated by the regular player? does he have a specific pp-style and force players into that style? or does he adapt to the personnel at his disposal?

I don't know the specifics, but I don't consider the Kovalchuck Devils and Ovechkin Capitals to be that similar, yet he had success with both. Seguin could do what Kovy or Ovy do I assume?
 
I really wouldn't mind splitting up Benn and Seguin on the PP units.

They do great together, but I think it'd be best to let them dominate on their own PP line.


Say we sign B Richards and a RHD D like Stralman. our PP units could be:

Seguin-Eakin-Nichushkin
Stralman-Goligoski

Sceviour-Chiasson-Benn
Daley-Richards

I kinda like that.
 
Putting them on separate PP's screws up 5 on 5 lines. We're also not deep enough to spread talent around like that. When we have options like San Jose has we could do that but not now.
