With no playoff hockey in Chicago, I was doomed to watch and root for the leafs the last couple years, and after another early exit , I got to thinking.

There is no quiet leadership on the Leafs.

When the Hawks were getting their feet wet back in 2008-2009, they had Samuel Pahlsson on the bench, directing players , and just being a calming presence when they were getting the yips out there on the ice.

There’s no one like that on the Leafs .

You had Marner yelling at his bench, pointing fingers at each other (“passengers”), no look passes flung up the middle of the ice ,etc. just pure chaos. Chaos will always eventually implode.

They don’t need to blow it up. They just have to go out and sign a guy who fits the Samuel Pahlsson type of mold. A steady hand.

If they can somehow keep the team together, or at least the bulk of it, I’d seriously, and I’ll be laughed off HF boards for this, but I’d look at Jonathan Toews, assuming he passes the physical and he’s 100% commited physically and mentally.

Just my observations.

Toews?! Lol...

Not saying these guys are actually available in reality, but based on the OP's suggestion, the Leafs should be looking at a guy like Hedman, Slavin, O'Reilly (lol...), Larkin, Barkov, Kopitar, Staal, Crosby, Ekholm, Danault.

Ryan O’Reilly was on the team for one playoff run and couldn’t leave fast enough once it was over.

Harold Ballard’s ghost is what haunts this team because there are too many players, ownership changes, GM’s, presidents, etc. that have changed in the last 58 years that it seems nothing can ever help this team.

torts does get results in year 1 wherever he goes

come to think of it, why hasnt buffalo hired torts

Depends what you define as "results"

In Philly he missed the playoffs and finished 7th in the division

In CBJ he missed the playoffs and finished 8th in the division

In Vancouver he missed the playoffs and finished 5th in the division

In NYR he only coached 21 games and made the playoffs, then missed the playoffs in his first full season the next year

In TB he missed the playoffs in a half season, then again the next year in a full season

What was the benefit buffalo was getting again?

What are you talking about? The Leafs are full of those types + have Berube as coach who is this. The problem is, none of them are good enough to say shit to the core (players). They need a core member who is that way and isn't scared to call them out.

A MacKinnon type ripping on Nylander for that awful coasting change, Marner for bailing on every board battle the moment he feels a hit coming, and Matthews not wanting to hold onto any pucks goes a long way.

I am hopeful Knies is going to be that guy.
