Prospect Info: Oliver Kapanen, RHC, KalPa U20 (U20 SM-sarja), 64th Overall

I think Kapanen is undervalued by some commentators and fans, he has pretty good hands and can make plays in very tight spaces, his shot is not as good as Suzuki or Slaf, he's never gonna be a 30 goal scorer, maybe not even 25, but every other aspects of his game are good enough to put him in a top 6 role on a winning team when he hits his prime.

I am skeptical regarding him being better than Pezz right off the bat. But I am prepared to be surprised.

Who is in favor of giving Savard a few games off?

Awesome news!

That's definitely part of it, but I also think the initial plan to send him to Laval would have been made before the Habs were in their current situation. In a playoff spot on April 2nd.

It's a great add for the team with Kapanen being able to play multiple roles and easily a better option than Pezzetta or Roy.
I think being in a playoff spot would be more grounds to not play Kapanen. MSL didn’t tolerate mistakes from Roy and Xhekaj when the vets made even worse mistakes but since they are young they are easy scapegoats. Im expecting Kapanen to play similar minutes to Beck.

I'm not sure if anyone had to chance to watch his time in Europe, but any sense of whether he got physically stronger?

I thought skating, pace and positioning wise, he was able to keep up in his nhl stint, but he just couldnt really outmuscle defenders to win a battle or protect possession. It's not even just body strength, but stick strength as well. He was easily stripped in stick battles.

I wonder if they try him at center with Newhook and Laine. Or if they keep Heineman there, and move Kapanen to play with Evans and Armia..

Not sure how he could be any worse than Pezzetta. He's had a good season in the SHL, played meaningful games and was relied upon in different kind of situations.

I'm interested in knowing why you doubt that Kapanen is better than Pezzetta currently though. Maybe I'm missing something.

Nothing... just want to see it, that's all. Before he was sent back, he wasn't playing really well and I'd argue not a ton better than Pezz. SHL is not NHL, especially not during the finally playoffs push days. So... fingers crossed... hopefully he comes back strong.
