Somehow it had never registered with me until this photo that Butch Goring flipped his #19 to #91 when he went from LAK to NYI, to avoid conflicting with Bryan Trottier. Seems he was the first NHL'er ever to wear #91, which of course has become one of the most iconic "high" numbers for several teams.

So in the spirit of the "photos you've never seen before" thread, here's one of Goring soon after his March 1980 trade to the Islanders, temporarily wearing #21 because he probably hadn't even received a parking permit yet, let alone the jersey number of his choice.

Ontario Skating Rink Hamilton 1864.
During the decade of the 1860s one of the most popular sports during the winter was skating. There were three rinks in Hamilton during this time and this image is of the rink located on the north side of Maiden Lane (now Jackson Street West) just west of James Street South. It was called the Ontario Skating Rink and was in operation until the end of the 1860s. During the summer it was used as a racket court.

Interesting designs. Highlights the influence of hockey in forcing rinks to conform to a certain set of dimensions and features... one can only imagine what a night at the rink might look like today if rinks didn't have to be multi-purpose.
