I waa randomly checking playoff series of the 90s (before I was a fan of the sport) and saw the Oilers and Stars played eachother like 4-5 times in late 90s/early 00s

Oilers won 1 and I think Stars won 4 times. Was suprised these two teams aren't talked about for memorable matchups between teams.

Everyone talks about battle of Alberta or Oilers vs Canucks/Jets, heck even Oilers vs Kings is pretty discussed considering Gretzky trade and post trade matchups + past 3 playoffs for the two teams

No one really talks about Oilers vs Stars.

The Oilers just also played the Stars in WCF in 2024 and won the matchup.

Was wondering is there a rivalry between fans of Oilers and Dallas? Was there hatred/dislike in 90s/00s when they matched up?

With Oilers and Stars being 2 of top 3 contenders to make the SCF from the west another matchup is likely is there potential for a memorable rivalry the NHL can market using oast history and potential future matchups?

I think I can speak for many oiler fans and a few dallas fans. We are tired of meeting each other.

And everytime Dallas and Edmonton meet? This video gets posted. The fact Dallas won the game is beside the point at this point in time

Tbh assuming Mcdavid extends this summer with the Oilers

The Oilers vs Stars is a likely WCF matchup for the next 5 years. Not every year both will make it but I expect both teams to be R2 at min teams next 5 years with likely 1-2 matchups in the WCF next half decade

As a kid growing up in Alberta, I don't remember much hatred. Aside from the upset in the first meeting between the two courtesy CuJo, it was basically always the Stars as a top team in the conference knocking off a bubble Oilers team. I don't even really remember anything controversial. Hard to build a real rivalry off that.

I would never watch the NHL again if it went back to those days

Oilers with a 20 some million payroll. Stars with 60 mill or so.

We were a farm team

No reason for hope or emotional attachment

Even VAN spent like 40-42 mill

Guerin gone. Carter. Weight. Joseph.
Dark times. It was that era that made the cap a necessity. Basically 4 teams played for the cup for like 9 years.

I feel like Dallas has linked more of a current rivalry with Vegas. Played each other 3 times in the last 5 years in the playoffs, including 2 conference finals matchups..

There's the Jamie Benn and Mark Stone hate, Mark Stone injuring Heiskanen...even Pete Deboer now with Stars after Vegas firing him

To me there is more bad blood between Vegas and Dallas.

The first Oilers game that hooked me was Game 4 of our 6-game series in 2001. Mike Comrie scored the OT winner but it would end up being their 4th straight loss to the Stars.

There was a “rivalry” on our side (a poll from back then on the Oilers website asked who our most hated team was and the Stars won over the Flames handily) because we hated them for always beating us, but to Stars fans the Oilers were just a speedbump to the next round.

Beating them in the conference finals last year was cathartic for long-time fans but it was never a true rivalry.

Our biggest rival will always be Calgary. In 2019/20 it was shaping up to be the most exciting hate-filled rivalry in hockey again like in the 1980s but the shutdown and the Flames 2022 offseason extinguished that.

disagree completely. I absolutely despised the Stars in that era. Modano, Hatcher, Niewendyk, Zubov, Turco etc. Every year the Oilers would scratch and claw to make the playoffs, and every year they would end up playing the Stars, and I hated them for that.

That being said, the Stars-Oilers series were almost always the most entertaining series of playoffs back then as both teams hated each other, and both teams had a lot of toughness and they would beat the ever-loving shit out of each other every series. I just wish the Oilers had won more than one round against them.

I carried that hatred of the Stars for a looooong time and just in recent years have finally started to think of them as just another Western Conference team, and not the team responsible for crushing my dreams every Spring.

The Oilers were essentially the Stars bitch during the 90’s. The one playoff series win was a miracle and the highlight of the Oilers from 93 to 06.
You forgot that the Oilers knocked off Colorado, the defending Stanley Cup champs, the following playoffs. Billy the Butcher battled Forsberg all series, the Oilers 3rd line (Murray-Marchant-Grier) was a physical presence, and CuJo outdueled Roy this time.

On topic, the Oilers and Stars did develop a hate for each other in the late '90s. Dallas players called the Edmonton fans rabid for, gasp, cheering loudly for their underdog team. It was Modano, Zubov, Lehtinen, Hatcher, and bunch of crafty vets taking on the younger, more physical Oilers, lead by Weight and Smyth. Hitchcock returned home to Edmonton to beat the Oilers and "throw roses on their grave."

Both teams need to go back to those unis. Especially Dallas.
Dallas in their current colours, yes. Oiler, no way!

Different times and rosters but rivalry usually stems from playing against each other lots in big and physical games. If we meet again in the playoffs this year or in the next few years the rivalry might be renewed. For now they are just 2 really good teams that met in the playoffs once in the last 20+ years.

We don't hate the Stars.

Even last year the fans were incredibly gracious and amazing.
When their DJ screwed up by playing our winning song (La Bamba) to troll us (without understanding the deeply rooted context), they apologized and an outpouring of a LOT of their fans, and their radio stations all pitched in and donated to the Ben Stetler foundation.

Stars fans are incredible people. It makes it impossible for us to hate them. They're so kind and gracious.
We don't really hate LA Kings fans either.

But yeah, the Canucks and Flames can go eat dogshit.
