Seravalli: Oilers tried to acquire Drew O'Connor last week, looking for a backup plan now with similar traits (big and fast) Holloway replacement

Ryan Poehling from Philly?

He's not huge but he's a bigger guy and is solid defensively with good speed. Depends what the Oilers want outside of 'big and fast' though, as he offers next to no offense.

DOC is (likely) not a rental. He’s a guy Van will extend, imo. Maybe the Oilers are more interested in a guy they see solely as a rental piece?

He might not be the ''big'' center Seravalli is mentioning, but Jake Evans somehow fits that bill.

I'm sure he'd be of great use in EDM, very reliable player that will likely have a reasonable cost to acquire. Is also an absolute menace on the PK.
It's exactly the type of player Edmonton needs. Elite PKer who is very reliable in his zone and can contribute with 30ish pts a season.

Maybe. I think Vancouver will see how he performs. He only makes $925k but he might be a guy like ZAR where you know he's worth more than that but likely not worth the $2mil he may want.

Unfortunately for guys like DOC, they are only "worth it" when they are cheap. There's not a ton of value in a guy like DOC or ZAR when they are making $2-3mil. We've seen plenty of examples of that throughout the years.

If he plays the exact same way for Vancouver as he did with Pittsburgh, I'd be offering a 2yr, $1mil per deal. Maybe $1.5mil. If he wants more than that, I move on pretty easily. Fortunately for DOC, some idiot GM who doesn't know any better will give him the $2-3mil he's probably wanting. Then he'll be that GMs problem.

Why? He’s an interesting player and someone I’ve wanted on the Canucks. How’s his play?
I think he's dropped off a bit this year but he should still be a pretty useful player. His analytics are solid and he's still pretty physical. He's getting PDOed a little bit.

Plus it's easier to look good on a good team as opposed to the mid one the Bruins are this year. I'd be pretty happy if the Oilers added him, he brings a lot of elements we need.

Definitely more of a 3LW than a 3C though. Can't win a draw to save his life.

It's really not difficult to find a Drew O'Connor type of player. He's really not anything special.

Tanev in Seattle sticks out as an obvious backup plan. Honestly I think Tanev is better than O'Connor.

Tanev doesn't bring the size that O'Connor does at all. I don't see how Tanev fits the profile.

O'Connor is big and fast, plays all three forward positions so he's a Swiss army knife for the bottom six and he's been a proven scorer at the AHL level.

Tanev has good wheels and works hard like O'Connor, but he doesn't bring any of the physical element and I don't think he has any unlocked offensive potential but I suspect O'Connor does.

I'm embarrassed for the Oilers that they publicly admitted this.

On a playoff team, DOC is a 4th liner at best.

Every AHL team has a DOC. Go find one down there and don't talk to the world about it.

You don't know what you're talking about.

If every team had a 6'4 speedy forward who can slot in at centre or the wing and scored 16-goals in the NHL last season down on their farm team, then every team in the NHL would have a wildly incompetent General Manager for having that player in the AHL.

Uh, you are aware that my team has had both of those guys for multiple years?

Saying Tanev doesn't bring a physical element like O'Connor is just hilariously wrong. Tanev is significantly more physical than O'Connor, O'Connor doesn't really use his size. That's why Tanev averages 239 hits per 82 games compared to 72 hits per 82 games for O'Connor.

Typical modern power forward leaves you expecting more. Inconsistent and passive much of the time. A change of scenery and a better roster will likely help Frederic thrive as he did in the better recent seasons.

Current roster is loaded with complementary mercenaries where he blends in as just another one.

Likely has the highest trade value of these types of players the Bruins could trade as well.

Some people are just so desperate to shoot their mouths off about the Oilers (not you, the person you responded to) that they say the stupidest shit without seeming to realize how ridiculous it makes them look.

"I'm embarrassed for the Oilers that they publicly admitted this". Because they've correctly identified that they need some speed, size, and secondary scoring? The horror. Imagine a Cup favourite wanting to add those things. 6'4 wingers that scored 16 goals and 33 points in their first full NHL season don't just grow on trees, and there's certainly not a plethora of them in the minors.

I should have been more clear what I mean by physical element.

I don't mean that O'Connor is going to play like a wrecking ball and finish his checks hard and heavy, like Tanev does.

I mean more that at 6'4, O'Connor can use his size, and reach to protect the puck and create time and space on the ice. A big guy with speed can create time and space for his line mates by utilizing those two advantages in a big way.

Not as down on OC as other Pens fans. I think he’d be a pretty strong bottom 6er like TBL Goodrow (less hits and physicality) if he got to play with other good players in a contenders bottom 6.

He played with trash on the 3rd line or Crosby here. Doesn’t have the skillset/IQ for to play with elite players but don’t think he’s dumb.

On a strong team and with an appropriate cap hit— I think he’d be a fan fav, 20-25 pt bottom 6er who can play C in a pinch.

Probably should have matched on Holloway if they knew they were going to need that style of player. Now he's looking like a steal at 2.4 million and will probably get over 7 on his next contract.
100% they should have kept holloway, young alberta kid who can do all the gritty bottom line stuff when hes not scoring. oiler fans who love klim kostin should have been all over holloway. maybe they can trade and get him back holloway would be the hyman replacement
