not saying they are in a hurry but they are doing the pump and dump to raise his value
Not sure about this. The “pump dump” theory doesn’t really apply here. St Louis seems to love the guy to the point of overplaying him. He’s finally off the 1st Pp in favour of Hutson. This is the coach not the GM.
And They just traded for a vet d man so I don’t think they want to just toss away the season. Yes Matheson shouldn’t be playing top 2 mins in Montreal, but the optics of dealing him now look bad. It will have to be the cliched overpayment to get him.
Next year is a different story, with all the the dmen a year older.
It will be interesting to watch this TDL for sure.

definitely need another winger isnt kasperi kapanen 2RW right now? thats gross
While it is true that Kapanen is playing wing on our 2nd line right now. We also haven't had Evander Kane for the whole season, and we were without Arvidsson for 15 games. Once those guys get healthy and up to speed, it will push guys down the line up. That being said, Kapanen has been a solid waiver pick up, he isn't horrible playing with skill, and he kills penalties too. I would like an upgrade on him for the 2nd line, but I have no problem with him being on the roster.

Oilers defence doesn't need to be fixed. It needs one more D to bolster it, but its still a good defensive group especially when you factor in the forward group's 2-way play.
Edmonton's 2 biggest issues on their D is...

1) Depth - they need 1 or 2 more NHL D for sure before playoffs. If they lost any one of their top 4 for a significant amount of time, they'd be in HUGE trouble.

2) Size - they are not very big - Stetcher, Emberson both aren't big, and Bouchard, while big, does not really play big.

So, if they could add 2006 Chris Pronger, they would be set. :)

A few - oilers 2nd line is pretty underwhelming
Not saying you are wrong.. but which 'few' and please list the top 6 they are using?

I beleive last game was

Hyman McD RNH
Pods Drai Kapanan

2 guys are definitely not great top 6 talent... 2 are well above average.. 2 more are damn good.

He stinks . They’ll be lucky to get more than a 3 rd for him . Hab fans were adamant he would be getting a 1 st this past summer . That was a pipe dream then ; he’s played even worse since . Guy is cooked
Garbage. Savard was not being traded last year. Teams will be interested in a d like Savard. Playing less minutes he will be a decent fill in. A late 2nd should not be difficult to get.

I wasn’t talking this past year . Mere months ago in the summer he was being touted as some great defensive d that would easily pull a 1 st . Late 2nd might be possible if his play improves / teams get desperate. Think he’s a bottom pairing/ occasional healthy scratch on playoffs calibre clubs . Think the cost / will be a 3 rd . Guess we’ll see ( unless extended; which many seemed in favour of doing ) .

2 trades for the Oilers to fix their Defense

Trade #1;
Oilers; Carlo, Frederic
Bruins; Bouchard, J. Skinner

Trade #2;
Oilers; Savard (50% retained)
Canadiens: Stecher, 2026 3rd
Nothing in it for Montreal. Keep Stecher and your 3rd, we will trade you Savard retained for Oilers first in '26? Or your '25 2nd not retained?

We can use our retention spot on another player. To gain more. Armia to Dvorak

Pretty sure OP ain’t logging into his alt again to respond to you counter. But I will, oilers say no to 1st for Savard. Oilers say no to 5th for Savard. Oilers says not to 7th for Savard.

Our D is currently good enough that we'll be fine taking a third-pairing LHD if he's an upgrade on Stecher or Emberson.

I'd be more comfortable investing in another goalie so we don't die again riding the current tandem.

You said that last year and costs you a Cup. You want to go home empty handed again?

If Edmonton trades Bouchard all Stanley Cup aspirations are flat out dead in the water, Edmonton is not built to play pure defensive battles, they quite simply do not have the goaltending for it, the team is built to outpossess and outchance and Bouchard is extremely vital for the team being able to do this.

Also Coffey is pretty clearly trying to have a mobile defense, I really don't think Savard fits the gameplan, even if we were offered him for free, I would pass.

I said no to Savard last year? And it cost me a cup?

On the first question, probably. Second question, no it did not. Leaving a $1M of unused cap space and not spending it on an extra scoring fwd may have though.

Bouchard is 5 times the player Carlo is and Savard has negative value.

This thread has given me a good laugh though so well done OP.

Stetcher is really the only D that needs to be replaced as a regular. They are big. I'm not sure where you make that conclusion from just because Stetcher is small. Between Ekholm, Nurse, Bouchard, and Kulak you're looking at a top 4 right now that is 6'5, 6'4, 6'3 and 6'2. Emberson isn't heavy but he's also 6'2 and plays with a bit of physicality in his game. Ekholm and Nurse are obviously very physical, but come playoff time there hasn't been a shortage in physicality from Kulak or Bouchard. They don't throw thunderous hits, but they'll use their body on guys.

Add another 6'+ puck mover over Stetcher who can play a good 2-way game and they should be set. They definitely don't need a 2006 Pronger added to this group.

Agreed. I don't think Carlo, despite being an excellent D, fits that group either. A mobile puck mover who can defend with some size would be ideal. Hell I'd take a Kulak clone and be very happy with this D group.

Agreed on all points. We need a defence of the puck moving, play making ability variety. Pure shutdown does nothing for us.

And while Emberson/Stecher are great stories and have done an admirable job this season. It’s hard to imagine that continuing into the post season. And of the two, the smaller guy probably sits. Although Stecher is showing more ability than Emberson from a pure puck moving/play making ability.

I also don’t think Carlo is even the ideal fit. But I’ve always liked him in general. And wonder if there’s more offence to his game. But likely, he is what he is, and most possibly also regressing from that.
