Post-Game Talk: Oilers score 5 goals and an ENG without McDrai

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Shots were equal, our guy let in 5 and their guy let in 4 though.
I'm not going to shit on Stu for letting that goal in where he was pushed over the line.
Skinner wasn't good in net and was 87.1%... Daccord was slightly shittier at 85.7%.

Both goalies were crap... but Oilers found enough offense to win it and finding 5 goals from anywhere without McDrai in the lineup is a solid offensive effort overall.

Adding Evander and Trent’s snarliness to this team just might put them over the top. Even with Shitstain Stu in net. Hope they don’t take Jeff Skinner out to do it however.
Not happening with Stu. Hopefully knobblauch can figure out in his brain to roll pickard in the playoffs. We just need average goaltending. Please. lol

Skinner actually played fine the first couple of periods.

In all situations he had an xGA of 2.71 in the first 2 periods. He let in 2GA so he was actually .71 GSAx.

The problem was that he had problems closing out the game in the 3rd period. We had a 1.21 xGA but let in 2.

One of the criticisms I have for Skinner is his poor rebound control. He kicks it into the slot and doesn't battle to get the puck when it hits him. This means that teams are getting 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities that are of the high danger variety.

The second is that everyone needs to elevate their game with McDrai out and Skinner is still just trying to hit .900. At some point he's going to need to steal us some games.
His rebound control is bad. It’s like he refuses to use his stick. Everything is off his pads. He does typically try for a big kick out rebound to power it out of danger. That’s fine when the puck is out by your toes. But the first option should be using the stick to ramp those rebounds into the corners or even over the glass. Everything is off the pads and directly in front of the net right now. Couple that with how he gets stuck and unable to move when he goes down and it’s tap in city for anyone close to a rebound.

Ryan and Jones are a given.

Kapanen should be the 3rd guy out.

After that I'd personally go Janmark

Skinner-McDavid-Hyman
Frederik-Draisaitl-Kane
Podkolzin-RNH-Arvidsson
Brown-Henrique-Perry
I think this is our best lineup as well but I don't think Knoblauch is going to scratch Janmark. He's been committed to Nuge, Henrique, Brown and Janmark being our main PKers for the entire season (despite the bad results) and I can't see that changing now. The only other forward in that lineup with somewhat notable PK time is Podkolzin at 41 seconds per game. Even with Janmark in the lineup we'd probably have to add someone new to the PK to replace Kapanen's PK minutes and there aren't a lot of attractive options there.

I still think we're going to see Skinner in the press box in the playoffs (if Kane is healthy) and I think people are going to be mad. It's not like Knob has been hiding his cards this season.

It will be very interesting to see who comes out of lineup. Every forward really stepped up tonight. No passengers.
I thought Perry was noticeably bad. Might not be a guy who plays every playoff game either way.

Problem is as mentioned already a lot of the fringe forwards are PKers.

If klefbom played on this team right now they'd be the 4-5.

Yeah that’s how I see it too. He’s closer to Kulak than Walman, Ekholm, or Bouchard.

The only benefit is he might push Nurse down which although might be unsightly ($9.5M 3rd pairing LD) but it would make the team slightly better at the cost of Troy Stetcher or Ty Emberson.

Credit needs to be given to Jeff Skinner in my opinion.

He’s been treated pretty harshly here with the healthy scratches and lineup demotions that were questionable at best.

But he’s gone about it uncomplainingly. Hasn’t bitched to the media or asked for a trade.

Now he's been one of our best players of late, 3 goals in the last 2. He’s starting to rediscover his shot and has far more confidence in the offensive zone.

Rounding into form like a bunch of other guys just in time for playoffs!

Don't think ".900 is good enough" works against Colorado or Vegas, but we'll see.

It probably will. Chances are most games (if played well by the team) will mean that we’ll have ~20 shots against.

A .900 SV% on a 20 shot game means 2 GA.

If you’re only letting in 2 GA you need to win those games and with our offence we probably win 8 or 9 times out of 10 in that situation.

I think it’s fair to say that it’s dubious that either 74 or 30 could hold COL, VGK, or DAL to 2 goals over 20 shots however.

Great effort without McDrai.

Is there any other coach in this entire league who would still have Skinner as the main starting goalie? Knob has balls the size of raisins, I just don’t get it. By now you would have to give Pickard a long look, not that I expect miracles from him but you have to try.

As per Knoblauch, he doesn’t make the starting goaltending decisions, Schwartz does.

Which explains…a lot.
