Post-Game Talk: Oilers score 5 goals and an ENG without McDrai

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Virtually identical numbers ...

Mikko Koskinen: 164GP (w/Oilers), .907 save percentage regular season, .892 in playoffs.

Stuart Skinner: 171 GP, .906 save percentage regular season, .894 in playoffs.

Keep in mind Koskinen played behind a much weaker D (no Ekholm, no Walman, inexperienced Bouchard, etc.).

I get your point, but the casual omission of Klefbom and Larsson is something.

I mean the team that gave up 17HDSC and an xGA of nearly 4. But whatever, this team is what it is.

Skinner actually played fine the first couple of periods.

In all situations he had an xGA of 2.71 in the first 2 periods. He let in 2GA so he was actually .71 GSAx.

The problem was that he had problems closing out the game in the 3rd period. We had a 1.21 xGA but let in 2.

One of the criticisms I have for Skinner is his poor rebound control. He kicks it into the slot and doesn't battle to get the puck when it hits him. This means that teams are getting 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities that are of the high danger variety.

The second is that everyone needs to elevate their game with McDrai out and Skinner is still just trying to hit .900. At some point he's going to need to steal us some games.

I said before. Would rather have Kosco. Dream of Smitty.

Should give Pickard a run and see what he can do. He's played well recently.

You wo'nt get run support every game.

The Oilers continue to win games inspite of Stuart Skinner.
There is a lot more to cleanup defensively than just above .900 goaltending.

Bouchard , Nurse and even Ekholm still need to be much better. Bouchard just can't be trusted on the ice protecting a lead.

The only goaltender in the league with a higher percentage of quality starts than Calvin Pickard is Connor Hellebyuck.

To be clear - I don't think Pickard is anywhere near the answer - but I think he's clearly better than Skinner at this point. And I think all we really need is .900.

Don't think ".900 is good enough" works against Colorado or Vegas, but we'll see.
