Post-Game Talk: Oilers pull out a win in Chicago

I don't think you guys actually watch anyone play outside of oilers games.

This is the type of performance you get for a goalie over 8 million

lol Boston had 18 shots and scored 4.

I agree people should watch other teams more. They’ll get an understanding that not every goalie is super man every night.

Heh, It been happening all over the league

Yup Skinner like

Get a starting goalie

Um thats the performance of a 10 million Stanley Cup winning goalie...

Man what is going on with 97? Plays are dying on his stick more than I can ever remember. Just bad puck decisions and refusal to shoot
He clearly injured. He needs to sit for a few and think about his recovery,of course he wont because hes too f***ing stubborn. He isn't explosive anymore and turned into a pass first perimeter player. Hes playing scared out there.

Loewtide on RNH's struggles.

Can't say I disagree with his assessment. Though what's annoying me here is it feels like there's an obvious solution: Rotate Skinner, RNH, and RV.

Arvidsson-McDavid-Hyman
Podz-Drai-Skinner
RNH
-Henrique-Kapanen
Brown-Janmark-Perry

RNH and Henrique are already the team's lead PK duo, and they'd give you a quality matchup line in the bottom 6 to go with Janmark-Brown on the 4th line.

Podz-Drai-RV have been decent, but I can't shake the feeling that how RV wants to attack doesn't click with the slower pace of Podz and Drai. I also don't think he's quite the goalscorer to compensate for Podz's on the other wing. Enter Skinner, who's a more natural scorer/shooter and whose shortcomings are covered by what Podz does well.

Meanwhile although I don't think RV's waterbug style clicks well with Drai and Podz, I do like the idea of it with McDavid and Hyman. Plus in the one game this line was together, it looked good. RV's defence is also decent enough to cover for losing RNH here (unlike Skinner).

It’s not totally a proper comparison but RV reminds me of Samsonov sometimes

Agree that nuge is not getting it done though. We need to set him up on a line that can give him success

I can see it.

RV has a better shot and more willing to go to the greasy areas to score, but their approach with the puck on their stick is similar. Both have tons of individual skill, nice vision, and a love for pushing for immediate pressure. That "I've got an inch, so I going to take a mile." mindset.

Game management! Two words that in combination should be banned by the League. The NHL has a fixation on close games. It must be intended for the casual fans of course because for most people who watch a lot of hockey it just ruins the game.

A couple of interesting graphics in this one. 1) This Oiler team had the best record at the end of the first half of any Oiler team since 1986-87. 2) The Oilers record in the back half of the last three seasons has been ridiculous. 29 regulation losses in what is now 130 games. Basically playing at a nearly 120 point pace for a year and a half worth of games.

It was a great story but the Derek Ryan era needs to end.

It was the Hawks but in today's NHL with a salary cap, an emphasis on systems and game management in full force every game is a potential loss or a win depending on which side of the coin your team happens to be on at the time.
The Oilers really haven’t been at their best yet but even still they’ve managed to keep winning games, position themselves near the top of the league while keeping pace and gaining ground on the teams in their division who have been some of the hottest teams in the league.

As you mentioned, they’ve consistently shown to be a second half team, they are a veteran team and I’m betting that once again we’ll see the team and individual performances ramp up as the season goes on. We really haven’t seen the best version of this team yet.

I think McDavid needs be given some time away from RNH and Hyman to reset and get back to basics. The line is stale, are into some bad habits, and have been simply rancid defensively.

Having said that - no idea who I’d put him with. Even if Hyman stays on his RW, maybe shifting a guy like Janmark up might shake the line up for a few games. Janmark pushes pace, is good on the forecheck, and I believe even scores at a higher rate than Nuge 5v5.

The old line can go back at some point, but it isn’t fixing itself at the moment.

Ice was crap. Puck was bouncing everywhere all game, especially along the boards. It favored guys like Draisaitl who can knock the puck out of the air easily.

Speaking of Draisaitl, I do not know why the Blackhawks coach thought matching Bedard against him would be a good strategy. Draisaitl could easily match his skill with the puck and then use his size to knock Bedard off the puck whenever he felt like it.

Agreed. I hate how Knob seems so stubborn about continuously trotting out a struggling line. That line was fire last year, but doesn't have it this year. Nuge and McDavid have had brief bouts of chemistry throughout their career, but their style is too similar to cohere over a longer term period. Hyman is a great complement to both players but seems a somewhat snakebitten this year.

Pikard wasn’t great but 3 goals isn’t terrible, just very average and he made the saves when they mattered at the end. Wish he would get more starts. Considering how little he plays he’s been quite solid.
He’s very obviously not better than Stu. Never has been. Say what you want about our tandem, but the Starter/Backup roles are assigned appropriately.

oh just scored again.

Moral of the story is oilers are better served spending money on a dman then running out droppin 6+ million on a goalie

Have you looked at Quick's numbers?

Jan .879 Save %
Dec .847
Nov .928 (vs Edmonton. Montreal, Detroit, Seattle and Buffalo)
Oct. he played only 2 games.

If you look at who Quick plays against? HE is doing the traditional back role. Most if his game have been against none playoff teams. he is 6-5 with %.900 save % and at 38 he is showing age

Still better than doing nothing. If Skinner gets hurt or goes through a shit stretch, what are we supposed to do? Ride Pickard in the playoffs? That's not gonna work over a long haul at least someone like that has experience and could get hot.
