Are people that stupid that they would think that a healthy Mcdavid lead team would just crash and burn. Ya there goaltending sucks but between Mcdavids skill and his skill at whining for penalties they will win there share of games
weird comment given the context of last nights game and Oilers PP dropping about 10% from last year. Hope it gets going soon

Jesus, they are a juggernaut when they get going. No D in the league can stop then when are they really going. You saw how quickly they blitzed the Canes last night. They smell blood in the water and BAM. 3-0 before the Canes knew what hit them.

The Oilers have gotten very few powerplays lately one last night when they got a 2 goal lead the refs put the whistle away they can't afford the Oilers getting to much of a lead game management you know , it applies to many other NHL teams as well

Ekholm and McLeod got healthy too. And the teams PDO went from laughably low to just slightly low.
Yeah those two missing camp had a weirdly big impact. The whole third line was useless because McLeod was so bad and Bouchards game crumbled when Ekholm wasn’t playing well. Now that those two are firing, Mcdavid is going and Stuart is playing well it’s a 180.

Why would whining to the ref be seen as a negative attribute? You have a deadly powerplay why wouldn't you use whatever skills you can to get one. I would want him to do that all the time. Eventually you get calls when you need them.

Yup. Woodcroft got fired for no reason lol, pure scapegoat
Debatable. The defensive system he tried to roll out this year was terrible, and some injuries and slow starts for a few key guys made it even more noticeably bad. Had this fast skilled team playing way too passive. They're best when they're aggressive on the forecheck and back check, and when their D play a safer style of game to limit odd man rushes on bad pinches.

Woodcroft also had a terrible habit of rolling McDavid and Draisaitl way too much and forgetting he had more than 2 or 3 forward lines. It wasn't uncommon to see McDavid and Draisaitl double shifted with the 3rd or 4th line for over half the game, or to have the 4th line not see the ice for over a period straight.

Because it’s laughably untrue. He doesn’t whine and he doesn’t dive yet we keep hearing these god awful hot takes because he plays for the Oilers. There’s countless clips of him biting his tongue after a ridiculous missed call. He should be obliterating the rest of the league in penalties drawn, yet he doesn’t.

Canes seems to get blown out every other night, kinda shocking they are in a playoff spot still.

Yeah I think he wins one of the last two years with the roster around him that EDM has. I also think that he wouldn't force the team to play a run and gun style and would buy in to whatever system that his teammates could succeed at as well.
and they would follow Sids kind of leadership to success.
In this hypothetical - Could quite possibly have beaten Knights last season then Stars and Panthers
Yep. I Could see that.

Since the coaching change Skinner is 7-2-0 with a .914.

Almost like he's a good goalie that was going through a rough patch.

All top players talk to the ref and if he isn't he should be. He isn't diving and he should be using his advantages to get his team advantages. Crosby talks to the refs all the time and I don't blame any top player when they got plugs hanging all over them. Its a skill as much as skating talking to the refs and something any player like him should be utilizing.

Skinner has been solid and guys like Ekholm are playing well. Bit of depth scoring helps too. They have the team that should be able to get themselves back into a playoff spot. I think the fantasy of them getting 1st overall that people where creaming over in this thread is pretty much dead.

McDavid was very clearly hurt early in the year and seems to be very much back. 19 points in his last 7 games.

The goaltending and team defending is massively improved under Knoblauch/Coffey as well (7-3 under him).

They have outscored teams 27-8 on their current 5 game win streak and are back to a positive goal differential. Wins against Vegas, Carolina, Winnipeg, Washington and Anaheim.

Still a long ways to go but they look much more like the team people predicted to be a SC contender as of late.

So is my fantasy of them cruising long, essentially locking up a spot early, Drai McD and Nurse all get in-grown toenails, go on LTIR, the Oilers scoop up another 28 mill in top end talent for late round draft picks spread out over the next few years and come back just in time for the playoffs.

Was such a nice fantasy too...

There’s still reason to worry there. Skinner was terrific in the regular season last year and then proceeded to be absolutely putrid during the most important time they needed him.

He was a rookie in his first playoffs and Edmonton had to ride him into the dirt because Campbell was unplayable. The solution is to get another playable goaltender so they don't have to do it again.
