Post-Game Talk: Oilers lose Duck Hunt

Yeah I was mad when Ciger left the oilers and returned to Europe. He played well with Dougie.
Then when we traded Satan for Barrie Moore & Craig Millar I got mad again…
Zdeno apparently didn't like flying so decided to quit NHL after a career year. Was a heart breaker as an Oil fan.
It's not just McDavid. What happened to Arvidsson, J Skinner, Henrique, Nuge, Hyman? All these guys fell off at once? Unbelievable.
For Arvidsson and Skinner Injuries? Age? Lack of PP opportunities?

Nuge and Hyman overachiever last season IMO. McSlump has brought them down.

Henrique was a driver but too old. Nuge would rather ride his horsey. Skinner and Arvid hit and miss. Hyman is his own worst enemy now. Trying the same 2-3moves everytime he touches the puck. Jam plays everytime. Goalies have seen it before. Hyman now is basically what he was in Toronto. Was inevitable the fallback. He's a 20-30 goal guy. The last year was extreme outlier.
Perry seemed to be the most creative out of this bunch tonight. The man still got the brains.

The bolded is up to coaching.

And Skinner has been continually scratched after being one of the better forwards in games. It's not injuries or age.

Support players produce, the ones that aren't tenured Oilers have elsewhere. They haven't this season.
Support players produce as a product of the drivers creating offensive chances. It's been a weird year with McD being off for most of it. Hyman had flashes of it early and then got hurt. RNH has moments but almost always leaves you wanting. Running out of time this year for the team to get it's mojo back. Hoping we see a healthier roster for the first round.

It's not up to coaching when McDraiBouchardNuge are Staples on top unit playing 90 seconds of all PPs.
Maybe if Knob had the balls to take McD or Drai off the top unit you would be happy. It would just make another set of fans pissed off.

Inheriting top PP unit of recent times is sometimes a curse where people like Perry, Skinner, Arvidsson etc suffer.

These guys were brought in as depth scoring and not primary scoring

True that, although I expected more out of Arvy.

He was injured for almost all of last season. The season before that over 40% of his points came on the PP (25 of 59)

His ES production this season is actually pretty good.

Skinners ES production is actually better this year than last as well.

PS> telus internet is crapping out

It’s not about making me happy. The PP has been trash relative to expectations. Make a damn change, that’s up to the coach

The coach is coaching to “not lose” and for corsi. It shouldn’t shock anyone that they’ve underachieving. He’s a fine defensive coach but the offense is neutered far too much in return. It’s not all on the players. These guys are better than the results

Yup, I know fans expectations are for the PP to go 40% but it isn't realistic. This season's PP has been pretty good for the most part. The last several games without mcdrai, not so much.

I thought Knob was fantastic last year, pushed just about every right button he could, falling a game short of the SC. And just like just about everybody on the ice, he's taken a step back this year. Still think he's a good coach.

Not saying he did nothing, and I do think he was a good coach last season, but he also had God-tier McDavid, Coffey saving the D, and Mark Stuart's invincible PK (Which Knob even admitted was ALL Stuart).

Something that doesn't get mentioned in the thread is the cumulative damage of shit goaltending, and really tonight it wasn't great either, was OK.

Team would get fatigued and a bit fed up playing in front of most of the goaltending its got all season.

Several teams we play have multiple goalies better than anything we've got. Thats gotta be tiring in itself.

Lose all the youth we lost and its more tiring.

This roster is extremely poorly put together. That the org even took fliers on Klingberg, Frederic, Jones just says they don't have a clue. Theres no plan, theres no view of type of team, nothing.

Its a mess. But its SQUARELY on management.

This is my kind of post. Pun, play on words, reference to past.

I liked Ciger. I liked Satan more.

The younger folk here will be scared by that statement. ;)

Hey God, I meant Miro Satan. just to be clear. hehe

I know you and Satan go way back...to your biblical event days ;)

Seeing Holloway and McLeod have breakout seasons reminds me of when Satan and Ray Whitney became first-line superstars within a season of leaving our team. Sather was a genius, but man, I really wish we got to keep those guys.

Torts would 100% play Brown over Skinner or RV on the PP lol.
Probably, but Jesus does he have a massive pulse.

On the plus side,
Brown would have to skate harder than that
Brown would have to actually lay a check here and there.

Tortillas would at least add a much needed picante to our mild bottom 9 combo salsa.

I saw the offense from the forwards a little different last night, sure we shot from the point way too much, but forwards were still trying to get to areas where it wasn’t an instasave by Dostal, they were just flailing at it and not getting good shots off.

Goes to show you can’t just change it up, and expect it to work, same goes for whatever we do differently in the postseason to not get carved up on odd man breaks and open looks at the back.

Part of the problem is the team is so used to relying on McDavid and Draisatl that they don't know how to play when they aren't around.

He seemed to last year. Not sure what changed this year
The usual, one trick pony, if you can’t adapt to your players and the opposition, you’re not going to last long.

Was gonna save this for after we get eliminated, but I wonder how much is Knoblauch, the Oilers add an analytics team and give them a voice and all of a sudden we’re playing a deny entry, quick exit, stretch passes and pile in shots on offense gameplan. And run it into the ground so every team knows how they can beat us, deny the crease, pinch at the stretch passers to get turnovers and odd man breaks and waltz in uncovered as a second or third trailer.
