Yup, prefer Holloway over Podkolzin and Broberg over Kulak.. but oh well.
Who doesn't? Holloway makes twice as much and they got a 3rd for him, they traded a 4th for 40% price tag on Podkolzin. Broberg is paid 1.5 million more than Kulak and they got a 2nd rounder for him, they would probably have to trade a 3rd rounder to move Kulak. Some things seem obvious to others and others just look at the player.

There’s still a lot of anger directed towards the players from the fan base. Holloway said he’s gotten quite a few “negative” messages from fans sent to him in the last few days.
Thats the price of being a pro athlete, he gets those messages after 1 bad game in November too.

Why would they sign both if they didn't expect and want both?
Simple, to get one of them. They had no control over getting both or neither, until maybe you factor in the price they paid for Bowman agreeing not to match (player and pick). Who knows if it was a complete bluff or not by Bowman.

What do the Oilers think they can buy with a 2nd and 3rd round pick at the deadline? From the past few deadlines... that gets you a Savard, Ceci or Chiarot type player at 50% retention. Frankly, it may not even get you one of those guys. It may buy a little less.

“Yall ain't getting broberg!!! Hahahahaha” - @Captain Controversy 8/17/24
Yeah, he didn't think that one through too well. It stings to lose them, but it was the logical thing to do for the long term. We picked up some replacements that are similar if not better in some areas at a price point we originally kind of offered to Broberg and Holloway, so that was very well done by Stan. On top of that, we got a young RHD with top 4 potential which is a position we actually need filled.
Broberg was in tough playing on his off side with the way our roster is, so I get his frustration on that part. He won't be worth the contract this year, but I think he will be for the 2nd. For sure he should end up as a top 4 IMO (at the least). Holloway I don't think is happy right now. His agent bet that we'd match I'm sure, but it was the wrong play when other guys are taking pay cuts to win. F around and find out Dylan. Sorry you got the bad advice, but you signed it.
Now we have cap space, and can start accruing more when Kane eventually goes on LTIR. By the deadline, we should be able to pick up some talent to help cross the finish line.

My goodness what a dumb take. I have 3 more championship memories than you...does that mean I win? Be better.
The other guy did bring up the Kings as if they're somehow relevant to the Oilers situation.

Such a loser take when people bring up the team you cheer for, because they have no legitimate argument

It will likely take a 1st to get Savard and if they are in playoff contention he won't be available.

If we play it right, we'll have about 9 million in cap space to play with if Kane is on LTIR...I think we can do just fine, thanks.

And WHY trade Ceci if you aren't going to keep Broberg? Bowman is Bergevin level.

To do what with? Oilers have nothing to trade.

We don’t hear about the offer sheets that don’t get accepted, for all we know these happen more often than fans think.
Two other teams submitted offer sheets for Broberg and nearly walked away as they needed to recoup their own 2nd to beat the other offers and weren't certain if they'd be able to accomplish that. They ended up working it out with Dubas. The only ones we hear about are the ones that are signed by the player.

I dont think you can get that much cap space if Kane is LTIRed unless you LTIR another 4M player. You cant get Kane's full cap hit back AND have unused cap.

To do what with? Oilers have nothing to trade.

Because they think they can hang around the playoff race as is until the deadline, at which point they’ll load up with the best veterans available and leave it all on the ice.

They have a 2nd and a 3rd this year, and all their picks for the next 2026 and 2027.

Plus prospects.

More than enough to swing deals for two or three big name rentals, plus a few depth acquisitions.

There should be no tomorrows in Edmonton - it’s Stanley Cup or bust this year, because until Draisaitl puts pen to paper, you have to assume he’s not coming back.

The same Skinner that, when it mattered, had a .901 Sv% in the playoffs?
After the terrible 3 game start the whole team had, he kicked some ass...so yes. You forget that last year was actually his first full year as a starter. He's 25 years old and is only going to get better IMO. SCF experience is invaluable.

9-1 in games 4 to 7 in last years playoffs. Up until that game 7, he was 1.57 goals-against average and .938 save percentage in games 4 to 7. The final game of course, was 2.04 goals-against and .905 save percentage with a 2-1 loss.

So he shows up big when it matters. I'm happy with Skinner, thanks.

Oh, He actually was a .909 in the finals, and Bobrovsky was rocking the .899 vs. Edmonton, but had a hell of a last game.

Difference is, we can pay Hofer, Neighbours, Toropchenko, and maybe even Pierre-Olivier Joseph with our capspace and the contracts that will very likely come off our books (Saad is a likely trade chip during midseason, Faksa is a likely trade chip during midseason, Krug is a likely trade chip in the offseason, Mathieu Joseph's contract comes off the books after this year, possibly Binnington is a trade chip if Hofer and Zherenko excel, etc.)

The most we're paying players is Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou (both around 8.1 million AAV). If there's one amazing thing about Armstrong, he always manages to find the value of players without overpaying.
Everyone's freaking out about Broberg and yes small sample size but the oilers had planned on him being in the top four and the blues obviously see it that way so there's a very good chance that it might be market value in year two.
Teams sign young guys based on potential all the time and if it doesn't work out it's only for two years and if it does you've now built good report with the player.

Oiler fans should be more worried about the fact they sucked around Bouchard and bridged him and now because he's stapled to the best player in the world, he's gonna get paid more than Nurse because the points point to a 9.5+ million contract when in reality, he's a pp specialist that sucks in his own zone and wouldn't come close to the numbers away from McDrai.
Just like Hyman.

Those two should seriously be giving #97 most of their AAV

On the bright side the Oilers now have a reason to show up for the 2025 draft.
Nope, their head scout is Rick Pracey, who got fired from the Avs for being utter trash. He selected Mitchell Heard with a second and drafted Connor Bleackley in the first. Go EP those players and see where they are now.
