Post-Game Talk: Oilers beat the odds

Imagine if we had hot goaltending in the playoffs. Hopefully Pickard is the guy. He’s really our only hope at this point

I still want to see what we have with Rodrigue. But yeah, Pickard in net definitely makes me more confident in this team than Skinner. Also, he looked great in the 2.33 games he played against Vancouver last playoffs. So who knows...

Pickard had bad games and goals allowed in that stretch too, the whole team was bad. But to you its all on Skinner.
Amongst goalies that have played 10 or more games Pickard sits fourth in Quality Starts with a .680. Skinner is 56th at ,458. Now quality of opposition matters, and it helps his numbers, but very roughly speaking this means that in the games they have played Pickard has been almost 50% more likely to give the team league average or better goaltending than Skinner has.

Like you mentioned quality of opposition, the vast majority of his games as an Oiler are bottom 10 teams. It’s easier to have quality starts against teams that are competing for the lottery.

Huge win, especially after that awful first period. Up front other than Drai and Nuge I thought Podkolzin and Kapanen had quality games.

Perry concerns me. Seems like his playing his falling off around the same time as last year.

But that does not account for the massive difference alone. The reality is that Pickard has simply been more consistent. Interestingly his lowest sv% this year against any one team comes from his two games vs Anaheim at .810. He also has a combined .851 vs Chicago in 3 games. He has total sv%'s over .900 against Carolina (.972) Calgary (.929), Dallas (1.000 on only 3 shots) Detroit .923, Minnesota .938, Montreal .917, NYI .960, Nashville .909, SJ .909, Utah .934, Vancouver .923 and Vegas .909 with a .895 vs Colorado.

The playoffs teams that Skinner has a .900+ against are Carolina .909, Detroit .943, LA .932, Montreal .926 Tampa, .914, Vegas .924.

So both have .900+ averages vs 6 playoff teams.

So we are 9 points up on Calgary and 10 on Vancouver. 8 games left for all 3 of us

I think we can stop worrying about missing the playoffs. It's about playoff positioning and prep now

I guess they just want to finish ahead of the Kings/Blues/Avalanche/Wild. Catching Vegas seems like a stretch. At least they play the Sharks 3 times. Also the Ducks once, but they underperform against them.

Not much doubt that the team is more confident with Pickard in the net. We haven't seen the obvious frustrations coming from the bench.

Knob will have to admit to himself that his best goalie isn't great but he looked good tonight. How can he start the playoffs with Stu given what we've seen here?
I really don’t think it is his call…the higher ups will insist it’s Skinner, just like they always have

Pickard showing few warts but better upside than someone who shall remain nameless.
Skinner has more upside by simply being bigger but Skinner's downside, of which we've seen too much of this season, is lower than Pickard's. You more or less know what you're getting with Pickard whereas Skinner has a wide range from really good one night to really bad four nights.

I have a theory that Stu isn't really injured, he's actually working with another goalie coach at a secret facility. He doesn't want his career to be the next victim of the Schwartz effect.
I know you're joking but you have no idea how much I'm praying this is true & the goalie coach is Sean Burke.

A bit like Bouch, Emberson's game started to come round when he started playing a lot with Ekholm on the PK.

When he's with Kulak in tough defensive situations, they're just too weak in front of the net; and Emberson is really struggling with hearing footsteps in the corner.

The only way I'd have Emberson in during the playoffs is if you can have Ekholm is next to him.
Considering Walman-Bouchard are holding their own and we've seen Nurse-Kulak also excel, there is some potential for that idea.

Nurse-Kulak
Walman-Bouchard
Ekholm-Emberson

Still I prefer Stecher at this point. Reward the guy who's playing better hockey.

Should just clone 3 Ekholms at this point but turn the knob to 28 years old

Stauffer also said he expects us to announce some signings out of Europe in the next 48-72 hours
I hope to god it's Beryozkin, those numbers at that age (and his playoff numbers the last two years especially) are nothing to sneeze at. Could be a real diamond in the rough and fill a big roster need with his size and skill. He needs to be a priority

Are Skinner's problems this year from positional/decisional changes due to coaching, a spiral from bad play and low confidence, being figured out by other teams, or his style/attributes being less compatible with the team defense? Strange that he has regressed so much this year when he should be getting better. Although I know he had holes in his game the last couple years as well.

The team will still push for wins, no doubt, but there is no rush whatsoever for our injured players to get back early. That our team can win without them, and that there is no realistic way that we are missing the playoffs, does take that pressure off at least. We could even shut down McDavid and Ekholm for the rest of the season. Maybe Frederic too, although we may want to get him back just to build chemistry

He’s shitty because he’s a bad athlete (in NHL terms).
Full stop.
