Oilers are good at hockey again: Back in the plofs

Skinner is playing very well but I don't have a lot of confidence in him. A 1b backup, even a guy like Jake Allen would help out so much.

Agreed about Skinner. He was pretty awesome during the regular season last year and totally crumbled in the playoffs, so I’m wary as well.

Great news! I thought I might miss out on seeing the Oilers lose in the playoffs again this year. :sarcasm:

I kid, I kid. They were my preseason pick to win the Cup this year and it certainly could happen.

Literally never expected them to miss the playoffs lol.

This seems like a weird transition year maybe, like some of the recent top dogs are receding but the young teams aren’t all ready to step up,

There’s just so so much mid in bother conferences, the oilers math to make it back in the playoffs only looked awful if you completely ignored the teams they had to jump over.

Ok thanks....Has he switched from zone back to man to man ?

Great to see them back in contention but that man to man system got killed in the playoffs ......

Skinner not making a save got them killed

Woodcrofts inability to see that got them killed. Campbell is junk and he made me nervous every shot during the playoffs but his numbers were good. Skinner was in a massive funk. Campbell should of started that last game

I felt that way even back in 2022. Smith was cooked, and while Koski wasn't much better he had the ability to come in for a game and play well. Nope, fat face just rode Smith into the dirt. And he did the same last spring with Skinner, when it was clear he was in over his head.

Yep. Might not of mattered in the end. It's unfortunate because last year was a golden opportunity. Nothing against Vegas they're a great team but once Boston was booted it was wide open

The prior year that Colorado team was pretty beastly

I think Knoblauch has made a clear large difference in how the team is playing. Notably our transition play is a lot better.

Honestly though, biggest difference I think is that Coffey has the D playing 10x better than Manson did. Almost night and day in terms of confidence, decision making, and poise.

I'm eating crow on this cause I certainly had Coffey in the only hired cause the old boys club but man was I wrong. Loved him as a player, and now as a coach. The change in Nurse alone.

Since November 10th (almost two months ago):

.769 -- Winnipeg
.750 -- Edmonton
.688 -- Toronto (somehow with 9 regulation wins in 24 games...)
.685 -- Florida
.673 -- Philadelphia

Over this period, they're 1st in offence and 6th in defence.
(Since Nov. 24th, they're 1st in the League by record.)

Scoring since Nov. 10th:

1.83 -- McDavid
1.82 -- MacKinnon
1.69 -- Kucherov
(Since Nov. 24th, McDavid is way ahead of everyone.)

So, it's becoming clear that the first dozen games of this season were an aberration, not the real team.

I don't really think Vegas is a great team right now, and I believe if the Oilers make the playoffs, and if they play the Golden Knights again, the Oilers were win handily. That's my prediction. However, I am really worried about Colorado, as Edmonton just doesn't seem to match up well against them. (Not sure about Vancouver yet.)

Obviously every team would struggle to some degree if their best player was injured, but it's wild that the difference between the stretches of healthy McD vs injured McD is literally top 5 in win% vs bottom 5 in win %.

He should be winning MVP every year because there is absolutely nothing going on in Edmonton when he isn't on his game.

There is more to it than that....but yes, the swing is wild.

Crazy that they're back in and the season isn't half over yet. At one point it looked like they were gonna have to run the table all year to just have a chance to get back into the picture.
We’ve had some insane win streaks since Garlic came on board.

I'd be interested to know how much of this was actually Woodcroft. He took them pretty far last season. Assuming they didn't have the injuries they had to start the season, would woodcroft still have a job? And would they be in a playoff spot? Or was he more of a contributing factor to the early season slump than any of the others?
Might be a bit of a hot take but I actually put most of the early seasons struggles on the coach

For one the team looked flat out unprepared to start the season,

Woodcroft got so badly out coached by Cassidy in the Vegas series that he overthought everything going into this season and decided to try a defensive system that was not suited for the roster

Yes the goalies were bad and some guy's were banged up but the entire team was piss poor, not one player looked right in whatever system the Woodcroft was preaching

Also the PK is massive improvement since the coaching change, Woodcrofts PK was absolute trash

this is spot on

tbh Woodcroft is the reason why is the Oilers didn't take out Vegas... after the 1st round, the Oilers were the Cup faves. This trash start cleansed the Oilers of Woodcroft and put some needed heat on Holland not to slack off

I've seen this story before. Oilers need to land a quality netminder stat. Their duo is trash and will fall apart when they need them the most.

I'm one of the few around here who always said they'd climb back - and I also said McDavid would roar back and win both Hart and Ross.

This is fun to see. Let's see how far up the standings they go now. I said they'd be in a divisional playoff spot and still think they do.
