July 1, 2016 the free agency period begins and unrestricted free agents are free to negotiate and sign contracts with any team.
In addition, any player at least 22 years of age who has not been selected in the NHL Draft can sign with any team as a free agent.
Any player who is not entry-level, but does not meet the qualifications of unrestricted free agency becomes a restricted free agent when his contract expires.

Restricted (Group 2) NHL free agents can discuss new contracts with other teams beginning on the day after this season's entry draft, June 26, which is also the deadline for a team to make a qualifying offer. Discussions must cease if a player accepts a contract from his own team or is confirmed to go into arbitration with his team, be it player- or team-filed.
An offer sheet is a contract offered to a restricted free agent by a team other than the one for which he played during the prior season.
When a player accepts an offer sheet and his team declines to match the value of the contract, his former team is entitled to draft pick compensation in the next upcoming draft or drafts based on the averaged yearly salary of the contract.

God damn Gorton asleep at the wheel again :sarcasm:

The salary cap number was set 3 hours ago and he still hasn't traded half the team yet. Slacker.

So the cap will be 73M huh...

At the very least, it gives us a better idea of what we have to work with.

I'm bored and have time to kill so i'm just going to break the cap situation down and maybe throw out some possible ideas.

So we'll have $16,000,000 in cap space with Hank($8.5M), Nash($7.8M), Step($6.5M), Staal($5.7M), Girardi($5.5M), Brass($5M), McD($4.7M), Zucc($4.5M), Klein(2.9M), Glass($1.45M), Raanta($1M), Quickie($950K), Skjei($925K), Buch($925K), Lindberg($650K).

That's 15 players under contract on the NHL roster. Although Lindberg will probably be on LTIR to start the season, so that leaves 14 players to fill roster spots.

Here are the RFA's that we have that could potentially fill a roster spot: Miller(lock), Kreider(lock), Hayes(lock), Wrath(most likely a lock), Hrivik(possibly), Jensen(possibly).

The only UFA I see us having interest in bringing back is Stalberg for the NHL team. Maybe Megna for depth, doubtful though.

Lineup shakes out like this without the 14 players who have contracts(trying to be realistic):

XXXX -- Brass -- Zucc
XXXX -- Step - Nash
XXXX -- XXXX -- Buch
Glass:)() -- XXXX -- Quickie
XXXX

McD -- Girardi:)()
Staal -- Klein
Skjei -- XXXX
XXXX

Hank
Raanta

So now you focus on the big 4 RFA's. Miller, Hayes, Kreids, and Wrath.

I think Miller will get around 2-3 years at $3M. Let's say 2 Years at $3M per for this.

I think Kreids will get 5 Years at $4.25M, or around that. Let's stick with $4.25M.

Hayes I think will get 2 Years, $2.5M.

Wrath, 1 Year at $950K.

So now you fill them into the roster, and after these signings you are left with $5,300,000 in cap, and the lineup shakes out like this:

Miller -- Brass -- Zucc
Kreids -- Step - Nash
XXXX -- Hayes -- Buch
Glass:)() -- XXXX -- Quickie
XXXX

McD -- Girardi:)()
Staal -- Klein
Skjei -- Wrath
XXXX

Hank
Raanta

So the spots left that are needed to be filled are now: 3LW, 4C(which either could be filled in by Lindberg once he comes back), 13th F and 7th D. Just a bit over $6M in cap space we have.

Some potential UFA targets are:

Riley Nash, Kyle Chipchura, Jakub Nakladal, Evgeny Medvedev, Mike Santorelli, Viktor Tikhonov, and maybe a couple of others.

In this scenario, i'd target Riley Nash, Jakub Nakladal, and maybe Tikhonov to fill in until Lindberg comes back. I think Nash could be had at 2 Years, $1.5M per. Nakladal I think we could get for 1 Year at $900K. Tikhonov the same as Nakladal.

Here's how the lineup shakes out now:

Miller -- Brass -- Zucc
Kreids -- Step - Nash
Tikhonov -- Hayes -- Buch
Glass:)() -- R. Nash -- Quickie
XXXX

McD -- Girardi:)()
Staal -- Klein
Skjei -- Wrath
Nakladal

Hank
Raanta

This leaves with $2M in cap space on the nose. I think for a 13th F we can call up one of Nieves($755K), or Fogarty($750K), until Lindberg comes back. That still leaves us with around $1.25M in cap space. So a bit of wiggle room.

So the roster would shake out like:

Miller -- Brass -- Zucc
Kreids -- Step - Nash
Tikhonov -- Hayes -- Buch
Glass:)() -- R. Nash -- Quickie
Fogarty/Nieves

McD -- Girardi:)()
Staal -- Klein
Skjei -- Wrath
Nakladal

Hank
Raanta

Then once Lindberg comes back, you swap him out with Tikhonov, sit Tik at 13th F and send whoever you called up(Nieves/Fogarty) back down to the AHL for seasoning.

Tried to be as realistic as I could. What do you guys think?

Gorton is "waiting for dominoes to fall" aka waiting too long and getting sloppy seconds / bad value in trades.

Just kidding though. Trying to have A LITTLE patience at least until draft day.

This is basically what we did last year.

This team needs a major shakeup, which this isn't. Good stuff otherwise though.

This leaves with $2M in cap space on the nose. I think for a 13th F we can call up one of Nieves($755K), or Fogarty($750K), until Lindberg comes back. That still leaves us with around $1.25M in cap space. So a bit of wiggle room.

So the roster would shake out like:

Miller -- Brass -- Zucc
Kreids -- Step - Nash
Tikhonov -- Hayes -- Buch
Glass:)() -- R. Nash -- Quickie
Fogarty/Nieves

McD -- Girardi:)()
Staal -- Klein
Skjei -- Wrath
Nakladal

Then once Lindberg comes back, you swap him out with Tikhonov, sit Tik at 13th F and send whoever you called up(Nieves/Fogarty) back down to the AHL for seasoning.

Tried to be as realistic as I could. What do you guys think?

Well thought-out and accurate, but what do I think?

I think that lineup could seriously contend...

for the 1st overall pick.

That's relying on Nash bouncing back, Hayes, Kreider & Miller taking big steps forward, Buchnevich being productive, Girardi and Staal not being abysmal, McDonagh getting his head out of his ass, and the forwards actually supporting the defense and playing as a unit of 5.

I think we need a leadership / culture change.

We're too vanilla and we've lost too much speed and skill.

We need to make changes.

Great assessment of the current situation though, for sure.

Just making my call official.
Goodnight folks. Hopefully we wake up to news

yeah waiting too long...it definitely won't be that we overrate our players and no team is willing to pay the fantasy trade prices we've dreamed up lol

Need to get creative. Asked for this type of trade on main boards and was told Nash doesn't have that kind of value (of course) :

Nash (10-20% retained)
Mid round pick (4th or 5th)
Additional contract (think Chris Brown)

For

Silfverberg
Manson/Kerdiles
Toronto 2nd in 2017

Would help build some current NHL players who have a chance to grow with our new core.

To balance salaries, I even said we'd take in Clayton Stoner, which I'd regret, but could possibly move for something small. At worst, he's the 7th d.

But, apparently Nash is too old for them, but having Getzlaf, Perry, and Kesler for another 5+ year at a similar cap is fine :sarcasm:

Interesting comment from dagoon on Twitter re: Oilers. Mentioning # 20/21/61. No idea what combo of or who from their side but I tend to listen to him...

Tell me how good or bad this is.

Trades:

Nash and McIlrath to Buffalo for Pysyk+38OA. Nothing retained.
Brassard to Minnesota for 15OA and Kaprizov. Nothing retained.
Klein to Chicago for Pokka. Nothing retained.

Signings:

Steven Stamkos. 7 years 70 M.
Kyle Okposo. 6 years 36M.
Viktor Stalberg. 1 year 1.1M
Jakub Nakladal. 1 year 1M. Knock yourself out silverfish. :sarcasm:

The roster

Miller(2.5M)-Stamkos(10M)-Zuccarello(4.5M)
Kreider(3.5M)-Stepan(6.5M)-Okposo(6M)
Jensen(865k)-Hayes(2M)-Buchnevich(925k)
Stalberg(1.1M)-Hrivik(575k)-Fast(950k)
Glass(1.45M)-Lindberg(650k)

McDonagh(4.7M)-Girardi(5.5M)
Staal(5.7M)-Pysyk(1.125M)
Skjei(925k)-Pokka(925k)
Nakladal(1M)

Hank(8.5M)
Raanta(1M)

Cap hit: 70.89M
Cap Ceiling: 73M

The logic behind the decisions.

Trades:

Buffalo needs forwards who can put up points, especially goals. Nash gives them a 1st line forward. Pysyk is a good skating defenseman who moves the puck well, and seems to have offensive potential that he hasn't reached. The next Stralman? Don't the fancy stat people like him as well? I think Pysyk is fair value for Nash. Buffalo does this because although Pysyk is good, they have Risto and Nelson on the right side who are both also good young defenseman, and they really need forwards. We can throw in McIlrath to account for them losing Pysyk. We get the equivalent value in draft picks, which I think might be about 38OA. McIlrath is a good young player, but the coach doesn't like him, and we need defenseman who skate better, pass the puck better and put up points.

A lot of people are saying trade Stepan to Minnesota, but I think Brassard is a player they could use more. They need offense and creativity in the offensive zone. That is something that Brassard brings, more than Stepan. They can take his cap hit. In return, we get the 15OA, which has been on the trading block and Kaprizov who is their best prospect. We really need to make our farm better, and adding what should be two good prospects does that.

I know a lot of people really like Klein, but he probably has a lot of trade value right now, and Chicago is going for the Cup again next season. With Girardi and Staal on the team with NMC's, his style of play really isn't needed. Pokka was NHL ready late last season, and still wasn't getting a chance. It seems like he might not get a chance in Chicago. Chicago also could use a top 4 RHD. Hjalmarsson and Keith are LHD, Keith is a RHD. They need another RHD.

Signings:

If people want a re-tool instead of rebuild, we have to make signings. Not making big singings would make it a complete rebuild. There is no way this team would be good enough offensively without some big offensive acquisitions, after losing Yandle, Stepan and Nash.

Stamkos is a good fit. People say he's gotten worse, and I agree that he has, but his perimeter goal scoring is the biggest need from our forwards. Worst case scenario, he has an Eric Staal type decline, but Stamkos contract would be over at age 33. Even with an Eric Staal type decline, he's a 3rd line forward his last season or two of the contract. That would be bad at the end of the contract, but you recognize with these types of contracts that the last few years they will be bad. The Okposo signing is another one that I think makes sense. He's consistently showcased that he's a 60-70 point forward the last few years. The contract would be until age 34. He might decline, but I still think he'll be a top 9 forward by that point. Also, he wouldn't really have to uproot his family, which might be an advantage of signing with us. The Nakladal signing is as a project 7D. If it works out, great. If not, it doesn't matter.

How good the team will be:

The biggest change with this team will be an infusion of younger talent with speed. 11 of those 23 players will be 25 or younger at the start of next season. Thats exactly what we need. We also make up for the Brassard and Nash trades by signing Stamkos and Okposo, which I think is an improvement at those positions. On defense, I'd prefer not to lose Yandle, Klein and McIlrath, but Pysyk, Pokka and Skjei are exactly the types of players we need. Good skaters, good passers, that could be a group of younger defenseman that puts up a lot of points. Thats what we need. If Staal and Girardi fill their roles on the team of being those purely defensive players, this team has the potential to be good defensively. Staal wasn't that bad last season, although streaky. The problem is that people don't like the way he plays, he's still a good DFD. A lot of people have mentioned that he played so well with Stralman, Pysyk is the exact kind of player that could have him playing his best. A good skater who makes good decisions with the puck. The team made a terrible decision to have Girardi play through a knee injury last season. A player who's already not a good skater is going to skate even worse with a knee injury. Give him a full offseason, and he should produce as a top 4D next season. People here will make excuses for so many players if they are injured, but once they find out its a player they've been criticizing, all of a sudden the injury doesn't matter, and they expect the injury to not effect the player. My only concern with this team would be physically, and defensively. This would be a very young team with a lot of offensive skill and speed, but there aren't many players with experience and physicality. If needed, we can always acquire an extra DFD or bottom 6 forward at the trade deadline. We should have over 2M in cap space to start the season.

I think what I have suggested accomplishes the re-tooling plan. We get much needed picks/prospects, young NHL ready players, and we also add free agents that should make us a competitive team for next season. Tell me what you do or don't agree with.

Are Stamkos and Okposo really worth that much of our cap?

Nash with 25-50 % retain would bring so much more than that, and I think you're undervaluing Brassard. Also, I don't think Chicago can afford Klein.

First, the FA signings.

Kreider will get at least 4.5m
Miller will get at least 3m
Stalberg will ask for more than his 2015-16 salary.

The trades:
Not overly enthusiastic about trading Nash for Pysyk and a 2nd round pick. Adding McIlrath just doesn't make sense.
Brassard to Minnesota for the 1st rounder is fine, but is Kaprizov is the only player coming back, I would not be happy. If it's Eriksson Ek, I would consider it.
Klein for Pokka is a good trade for us, but Chicago does not have the cap space to take on a 2.9m D-man

People here are so impatient. Wanting trades to happen at the snap of a finger. Then when they finally do the *****ing and moaning happens. Give Gorton some time here. It is what it is and will be what it will be.

I will say that if he does trade Kreider it will be one of the biggest organizational mistakes in the last few decades. Rob Peter to pay Paul. You guys want Justin Faulk to be that "PP QB" just like Yandle was supposed to be. And while Yandle was good for us, he hardly made our PP anymore special than what it was. We gave up a lot for Yandle. And now you want to give up our only power forward for Faulk. In fact a physical specimen that many many teams would love to have.

I know last season was rough but stop being so irrational in your value of the existing pieces we have. Some should be part of the solution. Kreider, Miller, Hayes all should be staying.

Have a little patience. The cap just officially got set tonight. Tomorrow I bet things start happening around the league with a lot of action on Friday and Saturday at the draft.

He has less than three days, and he needs to make at least two or three good trades. Its a lot to ask for, but it needs to get done.
