Offseason Roster Building Thread Part VII

In a way it does, but I worded it wrong. If you call up a couple of players to push you all the way to the cap, rather than stay $1 or $2 million below the cap, you can maximize your cap relief.

This site explains it.

Basic Formula Example

Training-Camp Formula Example:

In essence, it's better to be up to the cap because you actually have a higher limit to spend at. You can then send those players from the AHL down, but still have the higher limit.

Ah, thanks for all of the clarification STK.

Even if Grabovski is put on LTIR and we get some cap relief, I don't really see us using it anyway... at least not until the TDL.

Mathew Barzal knows it's management's decision whether he makes the New York Islanders this season.

It's up to him to make that decision really tough on head coach Jack Capuano and general manager Garth Snow.

"I'm just coming in really humble, ready to work hard and trying to show management and whatnot that I can make a spot on the team this year," Barzal said. "Who knows, they are going to do what's best for me and they have good intentions. I'm just coming in with a positive mindset and am going to work really hard."

It's win-win whether or not he makes the team, but part of me hopes he does. Barzal seems like the real deal.

I'm still rooting for Ho-Sang to be the first one to make the jump. It's a position of need and hopefully he'll get some time with Tavares in camp depending on when this silly tournament is over. I want to see if he can fast track his maturation with the idea that he might play in the NHL.

The only difference is that if Barzal is sent back down, he has to stay for the year. If both are ready, I would rather have Barzal with the team, and Ho Sang playing in the AHL so that he can be called up in case of injury.
