Salary Cap: Offseason Hypothetical: Would you spend 20% of the Leafs cap on one player?

Ouch, after the first line that team looks terrible. We would probably miss the playoffs by a lot, and not have our first rounder to show for it. If Stamkos was serious about coming to Toronto, why would he gut the team he's going to? Doesn't make sense, when he could just sign as a UFA.

Meh. In a year or two, Nylander could be in that RW slot, and it'll look a lot better. I think this lineup looks much better than what we'll be icing this October.

JVR - Stamkos - Nylander
Lupul - Bozak - Clarkson
Komarov - Santorelli(?) - Kontiola
Ashton - Holland - Frattin
Bodie

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Robidas - Rielly
Franson(?) - Polak
Granberg

Bernier
Reimer(?)

Obviously, it would be much better to get him as a UFA for nothing more than $$ and keep all our other guys, but I seriously doubt Tampa will allow him to walk away for nothing in return.

Tampa allowing Stamkos to walk away for nothing has no baring on Stamkos signing in Toronto July 1st if he wants to play in Toronto. He'd be a UFA. The only thing we need to do is just show him all the monies, and his contract and a pen.

Lets summarize Leafs rebuild plan.

Start rebuild.

9 years later add Stamkos as UFA paying max allowable.

Rebuild complete.

if a player like stamkos wanted to come to toronto and all it was going to take was money he would be given a blank check. especially when you consider his age when he would be signing. he would be younger then kessel is now.

it would explain shannahan only giving out 1 year contracts. we should have lots of cap space in 2 years. i could only imagine the circus if stamkos made the declaration that he wants to experience free agency. somewhere between brad richards and lebron

For the right player, who wouldn't? IMHO Stamkos coming to Toronto is a real possibility.

Why do you think that?

The climate?
The taxes?
The pressure?
The stability of the organization?
The coaching?
The winning culture?

LOL. Getting Stamkos would have NOTHING to do with their "rebuild plan", obviously. It would simply be amazing fortune falling into their lap, no matter if it was 9 years ago or 9 years from now. No team in the NHL would pass up a free shot at getting Crosby, Malkin or Stamkos. It'll all be moot anyway, as he ain't coming here. But your comment is silly and has nothing to do with anything in regards to our "rebuild".

If its for Stamkos, you do whatever you need to do to get it done
There is no question needed.

Top player and top C in the NHL
We have been crying for a top C since Sundin.
Why would we not pay him whatever he wants?

A healthy Stamkos is probably good for 55 goals in a full season. So yes, he's worth 13.8 million, especially since the cap is expected to go up by a healthy margin next offseason thanks to the dump truck of Rogers/Bell cash the league is getting. Signing him as a UFA would be a no brainer with the current cap. Too bad he's not a UFA today, though... in two years, the cap could be around $80M and a max contract of $16M would be worth a second thought.

Is he worth Kadri, Kessel, 2015 1st+? Probably, but that doesn't make it a good trade. Kadri and Kessel combined will probably score as many goals as Stamkos in most seasons while making less than 20% of the cap, and that's ignoring whatever the 2015 1st turns out to be and the risk that Stamkos could leave as a UFA.

i might be in the minority but i would trade kessel, kadri, and the 2015 1st for stamkos. stamkos is a franchise player. kadri will end up getting moved at somepoint or lost for free just like kulemin. remember when burke could have gotten carter for kadri and kulemin.....

no matter what happens it is impossible to build a contending team around a winger. obviously the 2015 1st + kessel are premium assets but it would take something obscene. to be honest i dont even think that would be enough to land stamkos.

So is the plan to finish dead last, win the lottery, draft McDavid, and then open up the purse strings to convince Stamkos to come play for the 30th place team in the league?

Perfect.....make it happen, what could possibly go wrong?:sarcasm:
