OK, it's now Thursday, Feb 27th and we have nine days until the TDL. Where the heck are my Fabbro and Ollie signings? Doesn't GMDW realize I am on a schedule here...and this is all about what I want.

Zero clue hat they are asking for but I've got to be honest that Olivier's game has fallen off since the season start. He's got 9 points since December 1 and there aren't many fighting opportunities. GMDW kind of played his hand talking about how important he is but even that has a dollar limit attached.

He said that a longer term deal has been presented to Provorov but not 8 years.

He also said that Jones is trying to get back to CBUS as well but Jackets need a 3rd party to take on some of the money as well as Chicago but unlikely as of now.

Olivier needs to be signed, doesn’t know what the hold up could be.

Lastly Jackets called him and possibly want him to do something for the Outdoor Game, he doesn’t know as of yet what that could be.

2 teams retaining on a 5 year deal seems pretty crazy. Good though, Jones time in Columbus has passed.

If they've offered him something like 6 years, then I could see Provorov's camp trying to bargain for more at this point, but then they'll sign for 6 at the deadline. He wants to be here. I'd personally have other plans for our defense but that's how I read the situation.

While the points have tailed off, I feel like there have been opportunities and he’s still impacting scoring. I still see him as an important part of this team and part of the long term plans.

The issues with acquiring Pelech is, of course, his NTC and Lamoriello's modus operandi. Columbus would probably have to offer something really juicy to even get the Islanders to consider asking him to waive.

Given the direction of our two hockey clubs I think there is a substantial chance that the Islanders are forced to retool and that Pelech would welcome the move to Columbus, if we were interested.

The bigger problem, which I'm just hearing about now, is the concussion history. This is number 3 or 4 here, a year ago:



That's not an absolute dealbreaker but it's a lot more for our staff to look into. Some players go through concussions and still have great play later in their careers, and some players don't. Right now his play is good analytically, just nothing special. He grades out like a defensive #3, which we could still use.

He is about to turn 36, it's entirely possible he doesn't want to commit to anything before seeing how he feels over the summer. His career earnings are 65 million dollars, you can't pressure him into anything by just offering 200k more than he would get whenever he wants.

I don't think Jones would have been ideal. Yes, we have a system coach, but the defense looks good right now (I've watched some of the January games on tape and will continue to do so as time goes on). The only way we would extend Fabbro is to trade Severson. But even that's not an option, since Provorov and Mateychuk are playing well together, Ivan works in defense which allows Deyton to use his offensive talent. And he can play on the second PP soon.

I won't be surprised if Olivier goes to Montreal. After all, he's a French-speaking Canadian and Montreal needs someone to protect Demidov. And he knows it. So we'll see, I hope he follows the logic, he's doing well here, so why should he take the risk.

He certainly should be. But there is a ceiling to what that value is and it is getting that to the point the meets the low end of what his agent wants.

Also, negotiations almost never go anywhere until a time deadline becomes a factor.

I don't think trading Provorov for a pick, even a pretty good one, instead of letting him walk (if that's how it's gonna be) is necessarily the "big picture, gotta think about the future" kind of move some people frame it as. I see the logic and asset management angle and there's a very real and easily quantifiable cost to keeping him just to lose him later for nothing, but there's also a cost to not giving the team the best chance possible when they have showed they could be ready to move on to the next phase, it's just more fuzzy and there's no number you can put on it.

I hope they bring him back. up to 2mm is ok in my mind but he can probably be had for less. He can play most lines, can score and adds vet presence.

I forget who brought it up, but someone said with important he seems to the locker room, it might be a good idea to keep him, lose the potential future 1st round pick and trade him in the offseason for a mid round pick for his rights. I also saw this rumor again that they may trade him and still resign him in the offseason.

On the other hand, we can't bring everyone back. The team is going to have to find a few places to improve.

I mean, ZAR and Labanc for sure, although Labanc in particular was often 13th forward. Kuraly I guess. And we're carrying 9 NHL defensemen and that doesn't include Hunt, although I figure JJ to be gone. We've done OK with depth especially on the blueline, but we need t keep guys like Harris and Christiansen pushed down the linup, not elevated.

This is all a long way of saying I like the idea of Provorov and JVR coming back, in a vacuum. But where are we going to add new, better players then?

I think they all know, JVR included that his career is over soon. He almost didn't have a shot this year. He's been a great veteran presence and he may want to hang it up after this year too. He has come in a done his job admirably but I'd have no issue keeping on the same minimum deal he had this year if he think's he's got 1 more year in him.

Same goes for Severson, another 31 year old (August) player, but they wouldn't be tradeable and Gudbranson has 10 teams where he can't be traded.

I don't think Severson would be around if we somehow landed Jones, that would make no sense. It's one or the other but not both.

I highly doubt we trade for Jones.
