I see us having 4-5 holes….

#1 a true goalie. A Sub .900 % goalie isn’t going to win any championship. Never in the playoffs that is.
Maybe Jacob Fowler? Definitely not Samuel Montembault.

Top 2 big shutdown defenseman. Every Cup winning team has this player. The Alex Pietrangelo, Aaron Ekblad, Charlie McAvory, Drew Doughty, Victor Hedman, Chris Pronger.
Maybe David Reinbacher is the guy?

A second line center. Every cup winning team has a second line center that can produce points. Nazem Kadri, David Krejc, Kuznetsov, Cirelli, we don’t have this.
Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook aren’t the answer for sure. Newhook to me is a third liner and Dach I’m not sure what he wants to be.
Michael Hage is 3 years away so I don’t expect him to be the guy.

A true power forward. The Tkachuks, Bennett, Landeskog, Lucic, Wilson, we don’t have this player.
Slafkovsky I think is the closest but he doesn’t have the it factor yet.

A shutdown line. I’m not sure if Evans is that center. He’s smart in faceoffs and somewhat offensive. Armia sometimes plays like Mario Lemieux and sometimes plays like AHL player. So no. What we need is if you recall a few years back the Ducks had Rob Niedermayer/Samuel Pahlsson/Travis Moen

But on the bright side we have…
#1 center Suzuki
#1 sniper Caufield
#1 franchise Demidov
#1 franchise defenseman Hutson

Preach.

I didn't think they would be this close to the playoffs so whether they qualify or not, the Habs have taken a good step forward this year. Believe most see the holes in the roster. The #2 centre will probably be hard to fill. Maybe it will be another reclamation project. We probably would have laughed last summer if they had acquired Dubois but he looks like he's found a home in Washington. Maybe there will be one of those type of moves available this summer.

We all live Demidov, but some were mad we finished bottom 5 last year.

I would have prefered getting another Demidov, or even the chance of getting one, or another Reinbacherz with a top 5 pick this year, than just missing the playoffs or losing in the 1st round.

Hopefully Hughes can make magic withe the picks we have and in the trade and ufa markets...

I sort of feel the same way with the bold part but if we make the playoffs, even losing in round one, I’d take that over what we were seeing in October/November.

This year’s draft on paper isn’t as deep as recent ones so the amateur scouts have to really do their homework.

And Habs who doesn't want it...

I have heard some say the top 10 is really good, but then after that it really drops, including in the 2nd round. That doesn't bode well for our two 1sts and 2nds.

But what's done is done. And hopefully those who are saying this are off. And hopefully Hughes can make some good trades with the picks.

Not really. If mtl loses to carolina and columbus wins their 2 games mtl can actually slide to 13th. All the western teams that missed the playoffs are better
Yup we can pick up a couple of places on the downside Utah would have more RW and Columbus would obviously jump us.
We would finish 20th which is better than losing and ending up 17th.

I know most will hate to hear this,

But this might be what's best for us in the long-term, rather than merely extending our season by a week~.

We'll have access to a better prospect but also, the team will learn a hard and valuable lesson on the consequences of choking.

More importantly, if we stumble short of the playoffs Hughes might fall out of love with some of these bozos on the roster and thus follow through with the roster reconstruction surgery.

Talking about Savard, Dvorak, Armia, Pezzetta, Xhekaj, Struble but also Matheson, Anderson, Gallagher, Newhook, and Dach. Need them all churned and improved upon asap.

I don't think so. Hughes was adamant on making some upgrades for next year. If we miss I'm sure it will leave a sour taste in his mouth. If we make it he will be excited to see how upgrades at the glaring positions would make us go even further.

I was the biggest Anderson and Gallagher hater for a while, but you absolutely cannot trade those guys. They've been working their tail off and offering grit that no other forward is bringing. It's extremely premature to slot Kapanen/Beck/Heineman into the third line role and we should utilize the assets on more glaring positions like 2C and top 4 RHD.

I like Struble and I think Xhekaj is the perfect 7th D. They should stay and so should Andy & Gally. The rest are expendable and or good trade assets.

Au contraire…

Anderson has been floating for the better part of his long, overpaid contract and if he’s come up for air and the league doesn’t think he’s a bum anymore then we should sell asap. I want him off the team before he turns into a pumpkin again (which he invariably will).

Despite picking up goals this year it is clear from his long stretches of non-production that Gallagher is cooked, so if a team thinks they can take him I’d happily throw in a pick to help his transfer.

This is a bad roster. We need fresh blood, much more speed/athleticism, and new impetus overall. I really hope Gorton’s talk of being “careful about who we bring in” was just media speak. I want a lot of change, personally.

Nah last year was the year where he was awful. He's had his ups and downs as any 3rd liner would, but he brings physicality that we do not have from anyone else. His compete level last year was unacceptable and quite uncharacteristic of him.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kapanen, Beck, and Heineman combined don't eclipse Gallagher's cooked goal totals let alone his compete.

Could these two go back to playing like trash like how they did last year? Of course, but money isn't a problem for us so their contracts aren't hurting us, and we got absolutely nobody that is guaranteed to even replicate their "flawed inconsistent" performance this year. We would either be giving up worse contracts than what these two have in free agency, or give up valuable assets that should be used for 2C/top 4 D instead.

If you think we're going to completely change 3 forward lines and 2 defense pairings in one offseason, I would say temper your expectations.

Well obviously I want to see as much change and improvement as possible, knowing it won’t happen all at once.

But especially Anderson I think should be sold before his value craters again.

As for cap space, we need it — the Slaf and Guhle extension eat a lot of money.

The only bottom 6 players I have total confidence that will be on the team next year are Gallagher & Anderson. Wouldn’t be surprised if any of the young guns are included in a trade for a 2C or a RHD.
