We spend money on weirdass ****. Humans are weird. I wonder if any other species will study us someday.

Actually, funny you should say this, as since you are American, your country spends less on Olympic athletes than any other single country, and by far the least out of any developed nation, especially on a per capita basis.

USA finds "sponsors" for their athletes - companies like Dicks Sporting Goods and Coca Cola and Nike are part of an umbrella of corporate sponsors. The government itself, at both the federal and state levels, spends almost nothing.

This kind of seems like the best possible way to do it...

Taxpayer dollars go towards more "critical" projects/programs and the private sector pays for sport and athletics.

Some countries invest more per capita, but send less athletes and therefore spend less total dollars.

Doesn't make sense to me, if they spend more per capita, the only way they spend less total is if they have a smaller population.

According to a recent Post article, Canada spends about $4 per capita or about $150 million for the summer games. That's not much.

Why are we arguing about this anyway? I questioned a post that said the rest of the world doesn't invest or care about women athletes. I think that's bunk, the Canadian women have done superb, we should be proud. Instead we try to downplay their accomplishment?

 I never said "the rest of the world doesn't care about women athletes". I was trying to make sense of the lopsided medal totals. You know, spitballing. I'm certainly not downplaying their achievements. It just seems that our men can't hang with the elite on the world stage whereas our women can, and I was trying to make sense of it.

Clearly this topic is going nowhere, so whatever. I said my piece.

Yeah, that is how I see the discussion. Assuming our men and women get the same resources how can the women be so successful, yet the men have done so poor?

They don't get the same resources. Under the Own The Podium program, resources are directed towards the programs that have a greater chance of winning. This is based on competitions leading up to the Olympics. For example, if the women swimmers are doing pretty well in meets in the years preceding, they will get more resources than say the mens archery team that places 20th. I like this method, it's really the only way to do it with limited resources.

But clearly this topic is going nowhere?

Pretty bad day for Canada. A whole bunch of people eliminated from canoeing/kayaking and then that pole vaulter fails to qualify for finals.

It could have something to do with the choice of sports our better female and male athletes chose to excel in.

When it comes to Canada at the Olympics I feel like we always end up just barely missing out on a medal podium. I've lost track of the amount of time I've seen Canadian athletes just barely miss out on making it on to the podium over the years. It just seems they need that one extra level which seems to escape them.

It's quite remarkable the amount of world-class athletes the US seems to produce. They're literally a serious contender for just about every event out there.

With that being said, I think with athletes such as De Grasse and Penny Oleksiak Canada can say they have a few superstars of their own moving forward. It's pretty cool seeing the men's indoor volleyball team make some noise as well. I watched their games against the US and Mexico and they have some serious heavy hitters back there.

The concern with the States is this is it for them many if not most of there stars have made it clear this likely will be there last Olympics so 2020 could be a very bad games for them.

Going into these game most said they should be able to get out of the group stage but anything after that is gravy.
