Official New Year Training Camp thread

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.

Get the small injuries out of the way early.
Apparently Marner also was limping after a blocked shot.

Getting this gut feeling that we have the right combo of players this year. Even the interviews seem different than the last few years. In a positive way.
This is a make or break year in my opinion.

If surrounding the spoiled selfish greedy entitled young core with players like Thornton and Simmonds doesn't get a reaction out of them, then I fear nothing will.

But I think we will see an attitude change. Or at lease I hope we will...

Nice to see we're focusing on compete level. I expect we run two balanced PPs, we have several new players (Thornton, Simmonds, Lehtonen) that will require PP time to get full value out of them.

With the additions made this off season, the Leafs have plenty to work with in their forward lines and PP units.

PP#1 - Matthews, Marner, Reilly, Simmonds, Thornton
PP#2- Tavares, Nylander, Hyman, Spezza, Lethonen

Where I think things need to be juggled are from the lines that have been released already. Jumbo wont be able to keep up with Marner and Matthews. And as much as hes stated that he will shoot more, Marner will not. The lines should be as follows if Jumbo is to play LW.

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander (Reunite the line, it worked)
Vesey-Tavares-Marner (Reunite Marner and Tavares)
Thornton-Kerfoot-Micheyev
Simmonds-Engvall-Spezza

Barabonov has to earn a spot to displace Engvall. In playoffs Engvall played well with Spezza and adding size with Simmonds will make that line a tough one to play with. Making the first 2 lines what I have put us back to having two lines that can have 40+ goal scorers on it. Tavares missed Marner, and Matthews has proven he can play with either Marner or Nylander and succeed. By no means putting Hyman on 3rd line is a good idea. He along with Vesey and Micheyev are the grit we need in the top 3 lines and he has succeeded next to Matthews before Tavares arrived.

This is my real issue with Kerfoot he got his head down on a line rush and Simmonds knocked him into yesterday which is best way for a vet to teach a kid to keep his head up ... hope he is not concussed again ... that would suck

Marner and Matthews lit it up together. Matthews had like 27 goals in the first 31 games with Marner, that line worked very well.

why do i feel like vesey is gonna be the next guy tavares helps make more money than he ever should have made?

I'm actually pretty excited to see what Vesey could do with Tavares and Nylander. He has the skill and now he has 2 all star linemates to play with. Wouldn't be surprised to see a 20-20 season

I think we will keep Marner, Matthews and Nylander as our core. It would be counterproductive to go out and get a spoiled selfish greedy entitled core that you desire.

It's possible should he remain on that line for much or all of the season. I'm not fully convinced of that happening just yet. A lot depends on whether or not it would be the Leafs signing him to that next contract too.

I love these back-to-back games against the same team in the same arena. First weekend of the season and its' a back to back with Ottawa? That's awesome. It has potential to be super exciting hockey. They should do more of that once it's possible to fill up an arena again. It will be bonkers!

This is his big chance. He has the size and speed and hands to be solid complementary piece.

Exactly. This is chance to get that next big contract. I want to see each line more difficult to play against, some offensive zone time. We scored a lot of goals off rushes and cute plays. I rather Tavares get 80 points and maintain more time on other team's side

Especially crashing the net. Other teams have no problem crashing our net, I want to see how forwards be a bit more decisive and just be difficult to play against. I lost count of how many times Kapanen should have hit someone, instead of doing a fly by and don't even get me started with GOAT.

I agree, I have watched a fair amount of vancouver games the last couple years being that I live in the city. Markstrom was an absolute rock. In my mind, had he not got injured he shold have seriously been considered for vezina. the level of goaltending he displayed, allowed the team to play the way they did. and to a lesser degree, losing chris tanev will also be a massive loss. he's been an undisputed top pairing D-man here in Van for a handful of years now. He is extremely underrated by most fanbases. i understand the schmidt addition may be viewed as a wash for some. but they are 2 very different players. Tanev is just solid in every aspect. i am not sure i would classify schmidt that way. 2 major losses. add toffoli on there, who provided a major secondary scoring piece that had been lacking all year for them. it will be very interesting.
Nate is a massive upgrade on Tanev and Hamonic is way better than Stech.
Hughes carried Tanev and every stat and eye test backs that up.
The legend that is Jacob Markstrom is getting out of hand.
Sure he had some games that he stole but he is wildly inconsistent and tends to revert back to bad habits a lot. Without Ian there to drill good habits I can see him regressing this season.
Canucks were top 8 in GF and bottom 10 in GA, so not sure how Marky carried us.
Ian Clark turns every goalie he works with into the best version of themselves and a guy like Holtby has the pedigree so I think our tandem will be fine.
TT only played 10 games and was gifted a spot on a top line that was one of the best in hockey.
One thing I will say and this is just my opinion but Hoglander and Jake will more than make up what TT brought.
Demko aside from a bad stretch at the end of the season had numbers quite similar to Marky.

Simmonds as net front and Thornton as a puck mover I'd assume. Would have to think Rielly, Matthews and Marner will be there too.

Second PP as Tavares, Nylander, Hyman, Spezza and Lehtonen?
I am still stating this sire and won't quit cause I won't stop: Our Captain, and many other Captains neither are not being kept away from that FIRST PP unit. They rule and run the team so its mui imporatantte for them to be there and lead. Therefore I can't see Tavares not being there on the ice all the time with the best of them, he is one of the better pp players too, from the faceoff up. So therefore, he will stand there in the stuckstill, still.

Malgin put on waivers with the hope he clears and will be available.

He’s scored 11 goals and 11 assists (for 22 points) in 19 games in the Swiss league.

I'd figure that one-way contract would be a big reason for why he might clear. Not sure how many games he'd play in the event he's still here. He'd probably make a few appearances though.
