Description of 7.8 quake. Military Helicopters to be used to evacuate tourists in areas cut off after quake. Ship may be sent to evacuate more if weather cooperates.

The linked article has a short video showing three cows/calf stranded on a small island of grass after paddock all around them fell away.

2 confirmed deaths. Less impact in Christchurch than 2011 quake.
 
I assume it was to far off and too deep to be felt?

Also what fault was this?

Depends on epicenter depth, location, type of materials as well as distance, type of "under the building" materials and building as to whether quakes are felt.

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the Northern California coast in the Mendocino Fracture Zone early Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Visitors to the USGS website from Humboldt County reported light shaking. People from as far as the Bay Area, the Sacramento area and Southern Oregon also said they felt shaking.

Bonnie Brower, owner of the Ferndale Pie Company, told The Associated Press she was grabbing something from the fridge in the restaurant’s kitchen when the quake happened. She didn’t see any damage, but said says felt a “big jolt.â€
