Official Earthquake Thread

I didn't see the 4 in Virginia on Sept 13. My daughter was in class down there and did not feel it. In 2011, they had a 5.8 in Virginia. I did not realize that Va was that active.

Link can be modified to region/entire planet and severity of quake.

How much you feel a quake is based on a few basic things: distance from epicenter, strength/size of quake, type of ground you're "standing" on (e.g., bedrock vs loose soil) and (if inside) building construction (does is "move" with quake, tamper/counter movement, and/or amplify movement). I've been in an office building on rollers and didn't feel a quake as others outside the building did. Also, skyscrapers often have a "resonant" frequency of movement, so a quake at that "frequency" can cause a building to sway drastically.
