My usual cutoff for caring is over a 6 depending on where it is. Wiki gives the 1989 Loma Prieta quake a 6.9. We had a 5.5 in the early 80's that shook things pretty good here and caused quite a bit of damage. Having experienced both I would say the Bay Area would suffer significantly from even a low 6.

6.5 quake on the Pacific-Antartica fault. I have never seen one on that fault.

Wife felt it here in Anchorage about 400 miles away. I was brushing my teeth and did not feel it.

This one is a shade under our normal threshold, but I decided to post it anyway because it occurred in a strange location on Saturday. Fox Creek, Ab, 4.4, this is an area with no history of quakes until fracking started to be performed in the area and this is the 2nd earthquake of this magnitude in 2015.

yeah that was a shaker, usually those are a bit more powerful but it lasted awhile.
