I don’t think Makar is at Mackinnon’s talent level, which is what you expressed. I also don’t think Pettersson is at Mackinnon’s talent level. I think it’s possible both players could get there, it’s just very unlikely. I think you comparing Makar to Mackinnon is the farfetched part of your argument.

I responded to a redraft poll for 2017 and had Makar over Pettersson for reference. I’m not biased.

But here’s your poll... let’s see what the hockey community thinks: Cake Makar: As Talented as Nathan Mackinnon?

Looks like you got your answer...

101-11 doesn’t seem close. Seems like one player is on a different level, actually
Thats not really how it works, though. I think everyone agrees that Makar is having a better rookie season than Hughes, but where opinions vary is in how much better its been. Even if everyone agreed that Makar was only better than Hughes by the slimmest of margins, everyone would still agree that he's better. That doesn't put him in an entirely different echelon.

Not mad but surprised Hughes isn't on the list considering he is actually better than Boeser

If they were that close, there would be more disagreements.

Let’s give it a little more time, but I’m surprised so far.
I think it's telling what Avs fans voted for versus fans of the East who probably haven't watched an Avs game all year. And of course Vancouver fans who try to downplay Makar

I mean you already have him pegged as winning multiple Norris trophies.

Not sure where this narrative that Hughes is better than Makar defensively came from, sounds like something Vancouver fans came up with to try to make the two seem closer than they are.

Makar outperforms Hughes in 5 on 5 play AINEC. Hughes is much more of a PP specialist than Makar. Look at their EV production compare to PP production.

There's no chance Hughes will catch Makar in Calder votes or scoring unless Makar gets injured again. The scoring race only got closer because Makar missed those games, the gap will only widen.

This is pretty apparent when you listen to hockey people talk about two. The way they talk about Makar is different from Hughes, Makar is just a special player.

Canucks fans shouldn't offense to this. Hughes will be a #1 Defenseman, but Makar is going to win multiple Norris. Like would you be offended if we said MacKinnon was better than Pettersson? Because that's the gap between Makar and Hughes is to me.
Multiple Norrises???
Looks like some Avs fans have caught the TML Austin Matthews disease of generational goal scorer.

Yeah. The old ‘many hockey people have said’ schtick. Same thing with Matthews and Leaf fans. Hold your horses and tone down the hype train a bit.
I’m an Avs fan and I don’t think Makar is generational but I think Matthews has the potential to be a generational goal scorer. The only active player with a higher goals/game is Ovechkin. Matthews is even ahead of Stamkos.

Oh I agree he has a chance. But I’d wait until he wins at least a Rocket. And don’t forget a generation includes a lot of future players who have not even been drafted.

Yeah. Looks like the same type of articles we’ve seen for Hughes. I didn’t see anything about multiple Norrises but I may have missed it. No doubt both will be great players.
"and you might even find it on the Norris trophy a couple of times" He seems to have high confidence in that, not even "I think" but just "you might"

While I'm surprised by the outcome, the numbers have continued to twist back the other direction in the poll. One more day before I bite my tongue.

I've watched Makar plenty. He's one of my favorite players in the league. He did have a rough outing against my Rangers though...

So might even find it on the Norris a couple of times means they think he is likely going to win multiple Norrises? I think he’s saying it could happen but he’s not saying it’s likely.
I think both Hughes and Makar could if they hit their potential win a Norris. Its far from certain though as there are a lot of great D who never win it or only win once. Neither Makar or Hughes are there yet.
You have to take some of the hype you read on prospects and young players with a large grain of salt. Publications like to get hits and fans get excited about the young players especially the ones with lots of potential. Let’s wait until they at least play a couple of years before we start talking about a Norris.
