Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Hagens dropping is Barzal all over again. Over-scouted because the NHL is run by dopes, which is why there are like 3-4 contenders every 5 year window and 80% of the league is stuck in perpetual mediocrity.
I distinctly remember someone on the main board saying Barzal would be bad cause he only had 10 goals in his D+2 year, even though he also had 69 assists (in 41 games).

I am thoroughly confused.

I literally just said I don’t want him at 6 specifically because I don’t think he’s a pure skill upside guy. Now it’s not fair to have that complaint? I’m not saying it after he was taken. There is no hindsight required.

Multiple people explained the PP talking point in detail yet again today. Being this reductive serves no purpose.
My bad I make it sound like I was talking about you specifically, I'm not.

What do you see O'Brien as then if you don't see a pure skilled guy?

Realistically in a redraft he probably goes around 15 again tho

Reasonable ceiling as a good Middle 6 guy.

Caveats: I don't make a meaningful distinction between 2nd and 3rd liners. My reasonable ceiling is ~90th-95th Percentile. I don't think there are more than a handful of potential top liners in most drafts. There will usually be guys who go later (like Benson) who fall into that category for me. It is not a consensus cut. It's specific qualities and how they tend to translate.

Honestly? Probably. The Flyers are dumb drafters. Their best pick over an extremely long period of time was Michkov and that’s cause other GMs were dumb first.

Their personal board is always the worst

2 of the top 7 GM's are the same dumb ones from 2023...so we may be picking a top 5 consensus player....

2023 the picks went:
Hawks
Ducks
Jackets
Sharks
Habs
Coyotes
Flyers

2025 they will go:
Isles
Sharks
Hawks
Mammoth
Predators
Flyers

It’s not worth getting upset about something that hasn’t and may not happen. Just got to wait till the draft

You don't know Philly fans very well...

Flyers pick Hagens - why did Philly pick a players who's stock is falling?
Flyers pick Frondell - why didn't Philly pick Desnoyers?
Flyers pick Desnoyers - why didn't Philly pick Frondell?
Flyers pick O'Brien - why didn't they pick Desnoyers?
etc
etc
etc

Yeah I remember everyone doing this when Michkov got drafted. Oh wait.

How many people do you seriously think are going to complain that the Flyers took a "player who's stock is falling" if they pick Hagens?

How many people made that complaint when this team took Michkov? Almost no one, nearly everyone was ecstatic.

Hagens or Desnoyers would be ideal picks; Martone is next in line if the centers are gone. I’d be thrilled with any of the three. As for Desnoyers, I think he—not O’Brien—is the one whose upside is being overlooked. In particular, his play with the puck down low or along the boards in the offensive zone stands out. His offensive zone skating is a real weapon. While he has some straight-line speed and rush ability (though that may be limited), the real value comes from his ability to use tight turn radii and sharp edge work to open up space down low and/or along the boards. He’s constantly shifting, cutting back, and forcing defenders to react, which creates time and lanes—not just for himself, but for his linemates. It’s subtle, but it’s highly effective.

i remember most people were in awe that MM was there AND that DB actualy selected him..

He's 8th in points scored from the 2015 draft with 462 from only 530 games, and I don't see seven players better than him below that. Just Kaprizov and Werenski.

Imagine where his production would be in a different organization too.

I have tears in my eyes reading about JOB being the most purely skilled player in the draft — and we’re idiots for not agreeing — from the guy who wrote this last year:

“I don’t get how some people say we need to swing for the fences with guys with a high level skill set and then say they’d dislike a Yakemchuk pick. […] I don’t say this with any hyperbole, but his pick skills for a dman are the best since Dahlin.”

Please tell me more about evaluating skill. After I grab a tissue.

Mark me down as a guy who isn’t sold on JOB sticking at center. He’s no less stationary and passive in the defensive zone.

JOB is a great example of the difference between a passer and a playmaker. Those two terms are often used interchangeably and guys like that are why I disagree with the practice. He’s without a doubt a wonderful passer. And yet I don’t really see dynamism. He doesn’t manufacture space for himself or others. He does do a wonderful job of utilizing what the defense has given him.

I had this conversation with Toe. Potter is a fine passer, but JOB is better. And yet Potter looks like a better playmaker because he’s constantly creating that space. If you can create opportunities in volume, you have wiggle room. If you can only utilize what’s given, but you utilize it well, you’re at the mercy of your opponent and can be invisible.

I’ll just repeat: Bear is as good a passer as JOB, while destroying him as a playmaker. Ditto Hagens. Martone too. This narrative that JOB has special passing ability is exaggerative. He’s just the most one dimensional with it, and it’s heavily heavily PP skewed.

Also drafting a CHL PP specialist isn't as simple as saying, worst case he'll be that in the NHL. The reason this profile has such a high bust rate is because it doesn't scale up the same way as ES scoring and it is likely just masking a red flag(s) that will be exposed at the next level.

It’s because people completely mischaracterize NHL PPs. You can watch most any juniors game to see how passive PK units are. In contrast, when Carolina throws guys at you, standing still does nothing. Edmonton’s PP is in constant motion to beat the F1. It’s risky to pressure them. Escapability at ES scales up to an NHL PP. Standing still playing catch around the horn is how you get the Flyers PP, where the puck never gets inside. If you HAVE to always dish the puck when pressured on the PP, you just play to the PK’s strengths.
