Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

The positive if Briere selects Martin over Hagens is that he shows that’s the type of GM he is and his head goes on the chopping block unless Martin has a monster year in the OHL and/or Hagens struggles

That would be a wildly unpopular move and he would be vilified by the fanbase. Comcast wants the Flyers to be in the playoffs soon. I would have to think if I’m Briere I’m staking my neck on Hagens. Everyone can see the Flyers are lacking high end firepower

Maybe the dinners were for backup players or a smokescreen

Obviously i'm basing this off of rumors, but i read somewhere that the only other team that wanted him as high as the Flyers took him was 21.

Now i don't necessarily think that's fair or accurate, but i do think its fair and accurate to say 13 was a reach. The question is merely how far of a reach.

He was never there at 32

As far as being a reach, I think this is one of those situations where I understand it both ways.

Buium complicates and corrupts every conversation, so for the sake of argument I’m going to pretend Ottawa took him instead of Yakemchuk, who is now available at 12. I don’t think I have a major problem with taking Luchanko there given my extremely narrow scope of knowledge. To your point, it is the absolute peak of his defensible range. If I spent the time to watch everyone, I know he’s not the top guy on my board. Probably not even top 3 or 5. I liked but didn’t love Eiserman. Helenius looked like a hardcapped Middle 6 guy to me too. Jiricek was fine. I watched none of Artamonov or Chernyshov, so I can’t speak to them.

The problem that I have is that if Buium is off the board and they “reach” for Cole Hutson in the teens after a move down, I’m happy as a clam. So I guess what I’m saying is that I’m not sure reaching is an easy determination anymore unless you had someone still on the board up a full tier or two. You know, like Buium with nearly everyone else in the universe.

Caveat: I’m begging off of Connelly in this hypothetical because I have none of the information necessary to evaluate him off the ice. I hope he really has grown up. That’s the best possible outcome for everyone.

Can you imagine how boring these draft dinners are? That’s what I think about. Boring prospects conversing with boring managers. Maybe Jonesy does a Billy Crystal-like one man show or something, I don’t know. But Briere and Flahr and (I assume his ass is there) Hilferty? Good god.

Maître d': "Ah, good afternoon, sir; and how is the draft class this year?"

Mr. Creoflahr: "Better."

Maître d': "Better?"

Mr. Creoflahr: "Better get a bucket, I'm gonna throw up. Great draft though. Great draft.”

there's some decent options in round 2, but i don't like any of the D projected to go in the first round. Schaefer aside of course.

i'm hoping the Flyers go forward for all 3 firsts, but we know how they operate. i'm expecting at least one of them to be a D. just hoping it's not 6 or 22. i can live with the Oilers pick going D, but there will likely be a lot of better forward options available at 22.
imo jackson smith is the only Dman worth drafting in the first two rounds.

I wonder if there is anything we can learn about the Flyers from the Luchanko pick. His big defining attributes were his speed and the idea that he had some kind of upside as one of the youngest players in the draft. Does anyone match that description in the top 10?

Ryabkin did poorly at the combine from training to interviews according to Chris Peters and Cam Robinson.

Also, "teams after 4 really liked Martin" -- Cam

Pronman just said a lot of teams aren't in the Russian market (draft wise) because they don't see them play and they put tons of value on live viewings

I have heard the same. Which is just wild.

When you consider that Tampa, Florida, Colorado, Vegas and Carolina are 5 of the teams who do the most work in Russia by all accounts... well, it doesnt speak well to the teams that dont lmao. Copycat league until your core beliefs that are 30 years out of date are challenged by those you are copying...

(Flyers also work Russia hard though, have for years actually)

I missed him on the pod. What else did he say about Flyers specifically at 6?

Do the Flyers still basically pretend Finland doesn't exist for scouting purposes?

Do the Flyers still basically pretend Finland doesn't exist for scouting purposes?

They have Kapanen in Finland as a European development consultant (he also scouts, I know for sure)... though not sure if he will continue role to same degree now a HC in Liiga.

They also have Sami Sandell who is a full time Finnish scout. Has been with Flyers for 5 years now.

So yeh, have feet on ground in Finland.

Does he believe that’s who the Flyers want?
He didn't say that. He said of the "six" he believes Martone and Hagens will be available at 6, it sounds like he thinks someone in the top 5 is taking Martin.

He said Desnoyers won't be there at 6. He said he thinks O'Brien can be EP-lite in the way he plays center

His quote about Martone and Hagens is "they'll have to explain why they took Martone, if they choose him, in a year filled with Centers"

Maybe I’m reading too closely into that last quote but that sounds like Flyers probably go with Hagens

I think Martin would be a fine pick in the 10-20 range and become a Dustin Brown type of player but his hype is out of control. I’m half expecting to read “don’t rule Martin out as the Islanders or Sharks pick”
