Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I am retired now and have more time to watch you tube videos. I have found some very interesting draft episodes on there. Today I was watching Chris Peters and Cam Robinson doing an episode on comps of players in this years draft. They did 10 players and I found the comps to be very interesting. Kashawn Aitcheson was the hard one to comp but they found a good one in Kevin Bieksa. All of the comps I thought weee very good and I hadn’t thought about them other than Hagens with Patty Kane and Schaefer with Heiskanen. It was a good watch. I really like Cam Robinson’s takes.
I also have been enjoying the Puck Bunker guys, Rocco Zappia and Darren Boyce. I find their discussions about players to be very interesting.
I don’t know how many guys here have watched these shows but I do enjoy getting different opinions on players. It helps me when I watch to look for what others are seeing that maybe I’m not seeing.

I like Cam a lot. Dont always agree with him but he evidences well WHY he thinks things and it pretty consistent with that. And diligent. Same reason I like Scott Wheeler. (also met Scott in person and he was a really lovely guy.)

I watch a few of these as well to help formulate an opinion. I tend to listen for if they are all picking up on the same weakness or same strength, everyone is going to have a slightly different take due to their background but if they all are seeing x or y then its a good bet its something that is a big deal. After that I tend to watch a few shift by shift games. I steer clear of the highlight vids anyone can look good on those, even Brady Martin. You also do tend to notice bias when they are doing a prospect they love, doesn't make them wrong but you can temper your expectation -- this is why scouting and drafting isn't an exact science as the human element comes in to play at some point.

Human element is always interesting in terms of players too...

One of the biggest outliers in terms of my 20 year CHL tracking project? Well... I don't think talent was the reason he didn't become a legit NHLer from what I know now...

And some guys who seem just comical that undrafted... well... sometimes there is a legit reason.

Same here. Across sports you see talented people not be able to jump to the next level due to a myriad of factors that have nothing to do with talent and everything to do with factors that cannot be measured.

Most of my experience with this is football, but the stories you hear from people really do make everything fall into place sometimes.

There was a large faller in the NFL this year who I was told had 7 different positional coaches at two schools and all of them loathed him. It’s hard to argue with that.

*Edit* Not Shedeur. I see how that could read and it’s not what I meant at all.

Yeh, it is rare for hockey guys to talk badly about someone... and when multiple do without being even asked, sheesh, even if nothing criminal or super unprofessional...

well, lets say that has happened 3x in the last few years with guys who in terms of on ice? I liked their game. Their stats projected too. Annnnd they either busted or were not drafted and people were up in arms...

A lot of it has to do with that coaches and scouts are really only honest with those they trust, even if its completely true you can get black-balled / ostracized. While "anonymous sources" are likely rumors, there are some where the coach will say something in confidence. I remember, and yes this will show my age, back during the OJ trial our OL coach was Joe DeLamielleure and he played with OJ in Buffalo. During any press conference he would get at least one question about his opinion on OJ and he would stick to the normal good teammate speech. Some of us got to hear his more candid take on OJ and his guilt or innocence.

Any thoughts on Mason West? Late bday, 6'6, from Minnesota. Seems like a high upside pick

Too many 6’6 don’t pan out, people still haven’t learned from Issac ratcliffe? How about matt strome? If you can’t skate won’t play in this league. Appleyard shared stats of taller players vs smaller in later rounds of the draft. The results speak for themselves. Building a team to beat Florida today, is why you will lose tomorrow!

The quotes about the draft from the STG make be a bit relieved to hear they like Frondell and Hagens

Huge chance they go with Frondell/Hagens/Desnoyers at 6 with an outside chance at McQueen if he has good medicals

Since they want a 2nd center I’m guessing they get Cootes or Nesbitt with their 2nd pick. They also like Eklund and Aitcheson which would require a trade up

It won't be hard to predict who they are taking once they are on the clock. It'll be BCA.

Aitcheson being the 2nd defenseman off the board won't surprise me so they won't have the chance to pick him unless they trade up from their second pick (I don't want to think about the possibility at 6).

At least they like Frondell and Hagens so that makes me feel a lot better.

Their 2nd pick will be much more interesting

That means they would pass on Martone regardless. If that makes you feel great...

And that quote made it sound like Desnoyers is their 2C in this draft and Hagens may be their 5C. :help:

I also think ASF likes to hear himself talk so there's that too.
I wouldn’t pass on Martone personally but at least this removes Martin and O’Brien from the discussion. I think Martone will end up a moot point anyway and he probably goes before 6

Think you are taking this too literal. He didn't say Martin wasn't an option (again if we are to take this at face value), just wondered if they thought he was a Center or not, which is the only thing they really care about (see Luchanko, Jett).

From the sounds of it, they will pass on Hagens if they can. If I were a GM, I trade to one spot after the Flyers. You know something good drops there.
I doubt two of Hagens/Frondell/Desnoyers are there so if the Flyers are going best center available and Hagens is there, he’s probably the pick. Still think Nashville grabs him if he’s available though
