Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I know we all dislike Grant McCagg, with his homerism but he does have quite a few NHL connections. He apparently Polled 10 NHL scouts to come up with the following best of:

Best Skater - Schaefer
Best shot - Miss
Best Playmaker - O'Brien (Hagens 5th)
Best Stick Handler - O'Brien (Hagens 2nd)
Best Sense - Frondell
Best Defensive forward - Frondell surprised me

Both the Frondell ones
The issue with McCagg is I don’t know if I would trust anything he says. I’ve literally watched the dude do complete 180 on players right after the Habs choose someone different, going to far leagues just to rip apart the other player since his team didn’t take him.

???, were you hear/read that...

personaly im #buckledin for a garbage deal multipick moving backwards...

something like 6 for MTLs 16 and 17th firsts... 🤣🤣🤣

Daniel Brière outright says he will negotiate with Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens for the 6th overall pick in the 2025 draft

Asked about the possibility, here's what Brière had to say:
"It's already started. We're getting going. We've had a few little chats here and there," said the Quebec native when Jean-Charles Lajoie asked if other clubs were calling him to find out what it would take to draft 6th overall.

And more specifically about the Montreal Canadiens, Brière answered this:
The host of JiC took the liberty of asking if the Canadiens were among the teams that had called Brière.

"No, not yet.

I haven't heard from the Canadiens, but it's going to happen," the GM replied.

"We're going to talk."

If BPA at 6 was Desnoyers then yes.
It would greatly replenish the system if we came out of this offseason with Hage, 4 1st, and 4 2nds

I think it would take a haul to move into the top 10 so I hope the price would be all 3 of Hage, 16 and 17. I don’t think Hage and one pick gets it done. And we know how weird Montreal can be about French Canadian players

@JojoTheWhale haven't watched any of him yet but seems like a guy you'd be super interested in. Only got 12 USHL games in this year but put up 9 points.

Ha I was just looking at him yesterday. He's a 2026 grad so he has a year to work with and in theory he could get drafted and do the same thing he did this year, but an NHL team may need an agreement to use a high pick on him.

If Hagens is there at six and the Flyers pass on him it will be a failure on the same magnitude as passing on Buium last year.
I don't agree because with last yr's draft there was a clear 12 very good prospects and Zev was one of them.... after that there was a consensus severe drop off in talent (Danny effed up imo)... We chose to not take the last of the 11 or 12 talented group and went off the board with Jett's pick... this draft is not a great one as there is one elite talent and then probably 6-9 players after that fall into a group that imo is not as strong as that group of 11 or 12 last yr but better than the drop off group that Jett was included in last yr (if that makes sense). Do I think there's surprises in that group of 6-9 for sure but like the Patrick draft this seems weak but likely will have 4-6 players that surprise due to their upside... Honestly have to give the scouts some credit as they did find Cutter (which ended up being a great pick with a poor decision to trade imo)... I think the player that goes 9 or 10 in this draft could be as good as the player going 2nd overall... its pretty open with players with upside but some red flags.... going to be interesting.... i'm curious on our late and 2nd rd picks....I think we trade some of those picks for a player or a 2026 pick... i could see us making a move for a Goalie this off season

Probably an overwhelming chance that one of Hagens, Frondell, Desnoyers, or O’Brien is the first pick. Outside chance of McQueen or Martin. Each of those players has their positive and negative attributes, defenders and detractors. My fingers are crossed for Hagens but I can live with any of those choices. Each has a chance to be a great player

I think the later 1st picks and 2nds will be much more interesting. Things are probably wide open after pick 15-20 and things can go any way. We’ll probably also get a good idea of what Briere’s vision is

I snorted at the 2017 draft being weak and comparable to this one.

This shit is inevitable. They’ll get squeezed out of the top 4, and the consensus picks are all non-needle moving floor guys, and they’re too poor at drafting/cowardly to chase the non-consensus player that looks better without hindsight. Then there’s the pretending the obvious floor pick has home run upside for a few years — “professionals” vs. “amateurs” will be thrown around — while the player we identified as the BPA probably becomes a star.

And I think we already have a pretty firm grasp on Briere’s vision with late 1sts and 2nds. He sees shapes, nothing more.

It seems like there is a real chance Hagens slips to 6. That’s who I wanted at 4. Maybe you have a deal in place to trade back if he’s gone, but I don’t want to trade 6 if he could be there.

For me I think if Hagens or Martone are at 6 that could be a home-run pick. Frondell is also a nice pick there.

I also think Eklund would be a high value pick but doubt that the Flyers take him.

Going to back to your prior posts, I am all in on drafting small forwards that slip and players not as well known to American scouts. From what I’ve read, I’d be happy with any of those players with strong hopes they could be first line forwards.

Yeh, I think those 6 at the top are the 6 with clearcut best odds to be actual impact players... Eklund is roughly similar to his brother at the same age level wise BUT he is a bit more dynamic and a bit chippier. So for me? Hard for him not to become a 70 point winger unless he simply does not get any better.

I dont dislike Desnoyers. And O'Brien has skill. But both just give me the impression that they likely top out as 2nd liners. I might believe more in Bear and Potter in terms of chances to be a 70+ point forward really.

Also hoping the Flyers can snag at least one of Ryabkin, Potter, Kindel, Reschny and Zharovsky in the late 1st. I feel like those 5, while not without their risks, are the most "Home run potential" later picks. Ihs-Wozniak also intrigues me but he needs work in terms of how he plays to unlock his talent at the highest level.

My hope was that Desnoyers would have a good tournament which would convince a club to jump him before the Flyers make their selection. That would leave Hagens or Frondell on the board for them. Since that didn’t happen, Desnoyers is bound to be a Flyer. At least they will have scouted him since they have his brother. They also should have a good grip on knowing his family and health history. No chance that he’ll be a pick like Patrick with hidden health issues. Desnoyers may end up being a good not great player. He seems to be the type of player who is solid all around with nothing great. Looks to fit in where needed. Could do worse
