Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I wouldn’t mind if the Flyers package one or two picks together to move up but the Flyers prospect pipeline is pretty thin so I think an injection of 6-7 prospects in the top 50 would be better with the hope that one or two of them break out, and at least adding some nice potential for a supporting cast
I'm not saying it's not nice to have a lot of eggs in different baskets, but that is a lot of capital. It sounds like contract hell in 4-5 years (usually top 50 picks burn their 1st elc year after 1-2 years). I bet if the Flyers fall in love with a player they could trade up from pick 4-5 to 1-3 or move up from 24 to 10-13 range.

Hagens, Frondell or Desnoyer with pick one whether we are4-5-6 is our highest ranked guys, in that wheelhouse.
One guy mentioned trading for Carolinas ?Nikishin. That guy as a LD, that would help us.
The second 1st, a Center out of the dub, seems popular.
The big Russian Dman in the second, would help with several missing pieces.

I’m not sure how far 2 picks in the 20’s moves you up. It would also depend on who’s available. I’d throw both late 1sts and maybe a 2nd if someone like O’Brien or Eklund is falling and we could get them with a trade. I’d also be interested in moving up for Mrtka, Smith, or Aitcheson.

Cootes? I’d be surprised if he’s still there in the 20’s. He could be this year’s Danielson or Luchanko. If teams think a player has a good chance of staying at C and has a 1st round grade, they usually go much earlier than expected. I wouldn’t be shocked if someone like Nesbitt went in the teens

After watching Cates, Poehling, and an 77 year old broken down Couts, there isn’t a center prospect I don’t want in this draft lol. I just hope someone is there in the late that can play the position. I’d also like to take a big swing if someone like McQueen or Bear is there, or a smaller guy people doubt like Schmidt, Potter, Reschny, or Kindel

Briere made that point as well at his end of the year presser. I get it, but that’s problem we would love to have. If all are worth money for their second deal then we have assets that can be traded at that point for one single more valuable asset. A big factor will be how the Avs and oilers do since we have their 1sts. I hope they make every pick unless there is an opportunity to grab a guy that falls but should be top 6 or so.

Pretty sure San Jose traded back from 11 with Arizona for picks 27, 34, and 45 back in the 2022 draft

Looks about right. It is something to note that usually the one in pursuit of the trade will commonly overpay to get the deal done. Last draft is an example of that. The Chicago Blackhawks traded pick 34 and 50 in exchange for pick 27. While the Utah hockey club traded picks 38, 71, and NYR 2025 2nd round pick for pick 23.

I would argue the package Chicago offered was more valuable than the one Utah offered yet they got a lower pick. The NYR were expected to be a very good team this season, but failed to meet expectations. I think the difference between the two packages was minimal, but I'd preferably take the 2 higher of the picks than an extra later pick. Usually talent dips a lot after the top 50-60 and you want to get the best players you can.

You are correct, a late 1st and 2 2nds got Arizona pick #11. They drafted Conor Geekie who was later flipped to TB in a package for Sergachev.

I’d do it if the team found a partner. Don’t like too many players in that 20-30 range. There’s a few interesting ones like Potter and Kindel but they also could be off the board by the time the Flyers pick, especially if EDM and COL win their series.

Button said don't be surprised if Martin goes in the top 5.
This is my biggest fear, not that I wouldn’t like Martin, but no way in top 5. I could see a team like Nashville or Boston liking him too. Maybe it’s just source that told Button a top 5 team liked him, which doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the pick

That’s what I was thinking
I know a team.
I refuse to believe they’re that dumb.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if he goes in the 6-10 range though, especially if teams feel the talent falls off after the ~6th spot. Every team would like a player like him, and guys with 1st round talent who have a decent chance of playing center in the NHL go much higher than expected. Especially if they “play the game the right way” with Danielson and Luchanko as recent examples; I forget how guys like Kasper, Sillinger, Geekie were viewed

This wait is agonizing. Why not do it before the playoffs so non playoff teams have something to talk about? Sheesh

20% chance of drafting 1st or 2nd
60% chance of drafting 4th or 5th
20% chance of drafting 6th

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous.

I will happily take 4th or 1st.

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes 6-10 either. I'd just call the team that does it dumb.
