Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Discussion

I
Beaudoin/Skahan won't be cracking the lineup in 2yrs, they are at least 3yrs minimum

MavLam I suspect will be mid-season call up next year and he will be a permanent fixture from that point forward.

Next year they add Simashev/But, the following year Iginla/MavLam are fixtures. From that point, the players will have to be better than the existing guys to get playing time. So Beaudoin will need to beat out McBain for the 3C role.

3yrs from now

Keller/Cooley/Guenther
But/2C/Iginla
Doan/McBain/Moroz
4th line guys

Sergachev/Marino
Simashev/MavLam
Duda/Kesselring

I think Durzi/Hayton/Maccelli are all traded at some point in next 3yrs and we let Schmaltz go to FA
I wouldn't be surprised if Schmaltz gets extended this summer in the 5 year, $7M range.

What trade chips does Utah realistically have?

2025 1st round pick
Crouse
Maccelli
???

The team ADDs Simashev and But in 2025-26
Iginla in 2026-27

Other potentials that crack the roster in the next 2 years; Beaudoin, Skahan, Lamoureaux...decide
I wouldn't be surprised to see MavLam spend the full year in the A next year - the kid just needs to play and stay healthy. After next season GMBA can decide if moving a RD out to make room for the kid makes sense.

If they extended Schmaltz for 5 years I could see him eventually ending up in Maccelli's shoes - off the roster, value ruined, getting paid to sit.

He will most likely lose his top 6 role and he's not suited for the bottom lines, IMO.

The mandate to get better team results every year makes integrating rookies very difficult. I think we could do it and still get better results, but if the results stagnated it would be very easy for fans and ownership to criticize management.

I think But is NHL ready and I think Moroz and Iginla will be NHL ready a year later. I don't think they'll all get a shot so quickly though. Gonna have to take the Doan route and earn it and then earn it again.

I would like both Simashev and Lamoureux to start in the A together, just because of waiver-exempt status that gives Utah additional depth and gets the players use to being paired together.

I just don't know what room they have for Schmaltz in the top 9 when you have But, Iginla, Moroz and others looking for a spot. 5yrs might be too long, I could see a 3yr deal, but 5 seems to limit movement from some of the kids
Those who you mentioned haven't even made the NHL roster, let alone forcing Schmaltz out.

Sure but imo you have to think long term. Not every prospect hits (obviously!) but Iggy and But are projected to be pretty good, better than Schmaltz. And you only need 4 top six wingers (I guess you could argue 6 if you roll a top 9 line some teams do), but either way Keller and Guenther are locked in there so really only 2 spots there. And Schmaltz is 29 right now.

100% agree with Vinny that 3 years-ish on a deal sounds about right. Enough time to see whether the kids will be any good and not too long to tie the team down with an unneeded contract. To me, 6-7m and 3 years sounds perfect but obvi this is a negotiation and 2 sides to everything.

That said I came here to post that I think we REALLY need a 2C, and where we're drafting hopefully we're able to find someone

We need to make the playoffs next year and whoever we select in the draft will be 2-3 yrs. away. I would think, Schmaltz will want a long term deal.

Mostly agree -- I don't think we NEED to make playoffs next year, but it'd certainly be nice. Being in the mix until the very end (like the Flames or CBJ this year) would be enough for me assuming the young guys continue to improve (esp Cooley / Guenther). I think we NEED to start making playoffs 2-3 years from now and basically become a cup contender relatively quickly after that.

And yes, Schmaltz will want a long term deal. Idk if I'd pay him though (I honestly don't know). If he leaves and we don't re-sign Crouse, that's enough money to sign an actual UFA, even with whatever crazy amount of money Cooley ends up making. I think the team's better with him though, for the next couple years AT LEAST and like you said we need to keep building. So idk.

Tough choice for BA, esp because Schmaltz is good enough that he should be able to get a long term deal somewhere. But, part of me hopes it isn't in Utah but I could live with it if the dollar value's relatively low. We'll see
