To allow discussion to continue about hockey in the GDT. Brief synopsis is a lone male rammed a police car near Commonwealth after the Eskimos game and attacked a nearby officer with a knife. The police officer is at least stable and it is unknown if he was hurt in the attack. A suspect was seen later on Jasper Ave driving a U-Haul and a chase ensued resulting in the driver heading down an alley striking at least one patron of the Pint. The U-Haul rolled and the suspect did escape resulting in dogs being brought in, cars being stopped at the bridges and investigated and helicopters on the scene. Conflicting reports on if the suspect is in custody. Please feel free to correct anything I messed up from memory.

We just have to hope that everyone affected comes out okay and that the people responsible are caught. Number one concern is with the victims right now and especially the EPS officer. Not going to speculate on motive.

Would just like to point out just because you dont agree with an ideology doesnt make you racist. Race is the way your born, ideological thinking is something you choose to believe in. If you dont support an ideology its discrimination not racism. Now in saying that I truly hope that this isnt a terrorist event.

There's no need to jump to conclusions. Let it play out and see what is released in terms of information.

Are you referring to the first or second definition of discrimination? Cuz it's definitely not discrimination in the first sense to be against an ideology. I would hope most everyone would be against most ideologies.

FWIW I just got this in an e-mail update from 630 ched

A police source is telling 630 CHED News that a suspect has been arrested after an officer was stabbed. The officer was stabbed while working special duty at the Eskimos game while manning a traffic checkpoint near Commonwealth Stadium -- at 93 Street and 107A Avenue. The source says the officer is expected to be alright. He says police caught up to the suspect in a U-Haul, which then barrelled down Jasper Avenue striking at least three pedestrians -- leaving them seriously injured. Officers were able to manoeuver the U-Haul onto its side, taking the suspect into custody. We're still waiting for an official comment on the matter from the EPS. (td) Listen to 630 CHED for the latest updates.

EPS Chief is going to give an update at 3:00am (1/2 an hour from now)

Was this what the conference reported?
Yep. Incident is being investigated as a potential act of terrorism. There was a flag in the car. They believe the suspect operated alone. The officer injured is going to be alright. 4 pedestrians they know of were hit by the uhaul driver before they were able to apprehend the man.

There was someone who tweeted a picture of the car that rammed the cruiser with the flag (see post #2) at the conference. He asked about the flag and the police chief confirmed it. The chief went on that the incident was being considered an act of terrorism and that the RCMP are getting involved. There were 2 RCMP officials at the conference but I don't think they spoke.

I will say this because this can be lost a lot of the time.

Yes it is looking like this is likely an act of terror however...
It is being investigated at this moment nothing confirmed.

This could be a lone Isis supporter who decided to try and impress his Isis friends and failed pretty substantially due to the quick response from the EPS.

Until things are confirmed don't get too riled up as it can only make things worse.

Also let's not turn this into hate of the Muslim community. This was an act carried out by an individual who may support a terrorist group. Especially because we know nothing about the guy.

Last edit: Changing our ways, living in fear and persecuting, attacking or hating Muslims is exactly what people like this want. Doing those things is them winning. Killing or hurting us isn't their goal. Terrorists want to incite terror, if we don't give them that they lose.

Alright, there it is. I apologize to the person I won't actually be able to interact with and thankfully didn't with my original comment. They were simply reporting the facts and I crapped on them and applied a horrific label to them. I'll try to use this experience to better myself particularly in this type of circumstance.

Thanks, I saw the photo but I didn't want to jump to conclusions until it was confirmed by police. A sad day in Edmonton and I hope those injured will recover quickly.

On the topic of terrorism I did not realize that this isn't the first act of terrorism in our city. Appearantly there was a attack on the Edmonton Airport back in 1965 that resulted in the death of 1 security guard and th destruction of a couple US Fighter Jets. The perp was caught and initially sentenced to death by hanging but the subsequent appeal reduced the sentence to a life sentence.

that's the ISIS flag.

those two images do not look the same.

if they found an isis flag, it's not from that stupid three-image twitter montage.

The stadium attack was during the football game, not after. Maybe unimportant, I dunno.

I am not convinced you can go to Walmart and pick up a genuine ISIS flag. The one found in the car was probably home made. If the police chief thinks it is an ISIS flag (even a poor copy), I am inclined to believe him

It really defends how you worded it.

This sentence is how it was perceived as an attack on Christians.

How is the ideology imposed on you? Calling anything a 'false narrative' diminishes it. I'm not sure what oppression you are talking about, but the quoted sentence reads like you had to become a better person because of the negative actions of Christians, their 'imposed ideologies' and 'false narratives'.
That's fair. I realize now how poorly I worded that. I should have drawn particular attention to my perception at the time due to a minority that used their tenets as a way to try and belittle others or impose their belief system on them. That is what I meant by a false narrative or imposed ideologies that concerned me at the time. I learned how to not generalize and see how many people were well meaning and good people with just a structured belief system I didn't have. I was sensitive to the vocal minority who seemed to hate upon alternative lifestyles or rights I considered a person's individual choice.

Edit: I see how I had worded that as a present belief and how it belittled Christians. Thank you for your patience and drawing my attention to that.

I feel for those injured by this asshole, but it I fear the "dialog" this will start in Edmonton, who already have a rather poor history of dealing with people were are "different"

True. Outrage begets outrage, though. It may be better for people to focus on the crime and police response rather than the motive. Baiting the bigots will only embolden them. Best to keep things simple. Soapboxes solve nothing. Just my opinion.

If someone wants to actually try and talk about these incidents last night and not railroad their own thread, we can try again or there's an OT thread for that.

Honestly, for EPS to call it an "act of terror" this early with only one asshole involved, does nothing but create panic and stupidity (I've seen it this morning in text from my dumbass, trump supporting friend).

I'm not suggesting I know better, but works and language matter and I feel this just inflames the public.
