Proposal: Offers for Howard

How much of a prospect is a guy who 21 and fully physically mature compared to an 18 year old? Teams will project where the 18 year old will be in 3 years of development and compare that to where Howard is now.
I could see a club trading a 21 year old AHL player for Howard though. An apples for apples trade.

It's literally a matter of projection. Not many prospects you're going to project to win the Baker.

Does anyone really think the return would be that much? I'd think like a 2nd round pick.

You're only trading for a few months early of negotiating. If he really wants, he can wait until August and sign anywhere.
But compensation is a second round pick anyway. Why move off of a really good prospect for what you're guaranteed to get in return anyway? Doubt Howard gets anyone great but look what McGroarty got WPG in basically the same situation last year

He has said he will go back to UofM, but school doesn't start until the fall and that choice can absolutely still change. McGroarty said around the same time last year that he was going to commit for another year in the NCAA instead of signing with Winnipeg. The Jets traded him, and he signed with Pittsburgh instantly
Didn't Cooley also have a standoff with Arizona about going back to Minnesota and end up signing in July or something? TB does have some leverage in the sense that Brisebois would have no problem shipping Howard off to a basement franchise, and if Howard doesn't have an exceptional year, who knows who will come calling? Personality wise he hasn't done himself any favors. Left his first college team in the dust, played great at MSU, then basically told JBB to take a hike despite his going to visit Howard numerous times and offering him playing time but no roster spot guaranteed next year

Probably. Fox also threatened to walk to UFA and was traded to Carolina, Canes thought they could sign him and ran into the same problem so he was moved to NYR, the only place he would sign a QO. I hope the next CBA addresses the level of power some of the NCAA prospects have. Especially now that CHL players can opt to go to the NCAA if they haven't signed yet.

It is actually a bit ridiculous how much power the college players have. Now that there is NIL, there is really no reason for it at all. The guys going in round 1 have basically zero need for that kind of loophole. They should belong to the team that drafts them until that team says otherwise going forward.

It will be hard to find the right balance though, 4 years in the NCAA is a long time. NHL teams can only keep CHL players rights for 2 seasons after they are drafted, and the KHL/MHL is indefinite. Definitely not a balancing job I want to do.

I know with the NBA all players are required to play 1 NCAA or other minor league team before they can be drafted, and the players have to declare themselves to the draft. There's also only 2 rounds of drafting and teams don't really have minor leagues like the AHL. NBA teams also have significantly less years of control over players which results in a lot of power shifts for teams. I think there are a lot of flaws in their CBA too but I am for shortening the max term a player can be given (maybe 5 years as a UFA and 6 as a re-sign). I think it would result in benefitting both players with the rising cap, as well as teams who may want to change course.

It's not a loophole. It's the same right CHL players have, which is to become FAs if they're not signed by the time their rights expire, and are too old for the draft. For some CHLers that can be after 2 years, not 4, and the rest simply re-enter the draft.

No change you can come up with is going to fix things without causing a whole host of other issues.
