Offer Sheet for 2c

The Sabres wanted a roster player, a top 6C...
The exact same thing what the Habs needed.
Montreal didn't have what Buffalo wanted. There was virtually zero chance for K.H. of getting Cozens. You can stop right there lol.
I’m hoping we can pry Zacha out of Boston with a list of assets they can’t refuse. They are going through a rebuild so they might bite. Although, I’ve heard they want more of a retool than a rebuild … but they also traded their captain, so who knows. Zacha would probably be past 30 and into ufa by the time Boston is relevant again, so maybe some prospects and picks.

I would also consider sending X out west for a big C if we are planning on not playing him going forward.

That's PP time? At least it looks like a PP squad to me, and it would make sense for his 700+ faceoffs, not being 1000 like Monahan, if he's used mostly on the PP.

Lets say he's the only option available, do you trade for him?
No. Stamkos is on the decline especially as a center. I'd rather see us get a true #2 center with stronger 2-way play who is in his prime or about to enter his prime.

Matt Duchenne although he's 34, he is playing really for Dallas.

Currently being paid 3 million on a 1 year deal. Think I heard a rumor about him wanting to play for Montréal recently.

If he makes it to free agency I'd definitely talk to him.

Really

The ideal outcome was to sign him as a UFA after trading him
I was good with trading Monahan. I'm just saying in hindsight we could use him right now.

Dach was supposed to be the answer. It was a solid move to role the dice on him. He has potential but we can't rely on him anymore with all the injuries & missed time.

Not sure if Newhook is the answer down the middle either.

He fits very well the Ducks core to and he’s the type of player Verbeek like
Which is why I'd give up a lot for McTavish, if he's the best choice out there. I would consider moving a couple of first rounders for him, I really am high on him.

Exactly.

It will cost to get something of value as a 2C, especially if we are looking for aYOUNG 2C that is not a project like Dach was and Newhook still is without much success in the role of 2C (better as a 3C to be confirmed).

Fans need to stop expecting that our GM will fleece some other GM to get this done.

Young, established Cs are hard to get, but only without sacrificing something established in return.

Would you've up Guhle + in return of a young, established C, for example?

Would you give a lesser Unicorn LHD than Guhle, a present potential lesser stop-gap 2C, a strong prospect for that position later on and a 3c in exchange; Evans, Xhekaj, Newhook and Hage?

Would you settle on a 28, 29, or 30 yr-old veteran C for 5-7 years, even if it meant including from our 1st round picks this year (maybe both) and/or Hage, plus Xhekaj, for example?

It will hurt somehow, count on it, because every GM knows that Hughes is looking for a 2C and Hughes already acknowledged this by stating that he is ready to overpay for the right player.
Personally, I have been happy with Newhook for the past little while. For next season, I would be satisfied with a Demidov-Newhook-Laine 2nd line. Newhook is still youngish and is starting to figure out how to use his speed at the NHL level. I think Demidov will open up a lot of space for his teammates. Laine is Laine... Good and bad, he should score a bit more if he receives passes from Demidov as well as Hutson next year.

I prefer developing Newhook than overpaying for an older player that doesn't fit the rest of the core.

Yikes. Alex Newhook, the 24 year old prospect where plays go to die. Career high 34 points.
25 points in 77 this season, in a season where people keep trying to say he looks “improved”. Took him literally half a season to register his first assist while playing a good amount of time with our best goal scorers. Flies up and down the ice with his great skating, just to miss the net by a mile or give the puck away constantly. Atrocious hockey IQ that will never work in a top 6 role.
If he is our answer going forward, we are in trouble. Third line scorer with high end speed that will occasionally snipe and give false hope that he’ll ever be more than that imo.
