NeelyDan's Friday Five:

1. Not only do we want to learn what your favourite song is - but we want you to explain why it's your favourite.
2. Who are the worst three public faces in the world today?
3. What's the worst job you've ever had?
4. Would money change you?
5. How do you personally judge or compare a persons intelligence? (i.e. comparing IQ test scores, educational background or grades, creativity, street smarts/common sense, personal accomplishments, open mindedness , forward thinking, the way they raise their kids, how likeminded they are to you, potential, etc?)
1. I like 60s country, mainly Tom T Hall Johnny Cash etc, crooners. My favorite song is this one. The details in the narrative, the melancholy, even the mandolin, I buy it all.

2.Putin and the Kardashians

3.I worked part-time for a market research firm affiliated with Time Warner Cable. You worked in front of a large bank of televisions, inserting local and national commercials every 15 minutes on major networks like ESPN. Then you tracked them on log sheets. They wanted 100% accuracy, which was impossible because you were inserting on two or three channels at once every 15 minutes. You could catch up on the logs during the 15 minute downtime but you need incredible preparation and four hands for the job. It was stressful and very difficult.

4. I can honestly say it would not change me a bit. Then again, I have never really had it.

5. I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I judge others on street smarts and quickness of mind usually. Ps. I try not to judge, because God gave us all our portion and types of intelligence, but we all judge out of necessity.

1. Not only do we want to learn what your favourite song is - but we want you to explain why it's your favourite.
The Alphabet Song. That and Happy Birthday were the first two songs I learned by heart. The Alphabet Song takes me back to a simpler time, when the world was full of possibilities and wonder.
2. Who are the worst three public faces in the world today?
Ronald McDonald, Pennywise, and Bozo. A Trio of Terror.
3. What's the worst job you've ever had?
My buddy Jim and I spent the summer of our junior year aboard the yacht of a semi-famous New England publisher working in the galley. We didn’t know how to cook, but worked under the tutelage of an Eastern European “chef” who is possibly the most vile man I have ever met. We were only allowed above deck after “Mr. Scott” (not his real name) had gone to bed for the night and the entire galley was scrubbed.

Jim and I jumped ship in South Carolina and hitchhiked back to Massachusetts. But that’s another story…
4. Would money change you?
AB$OLUTELY!!!
5. How do you personally judge or compare a persons intelligence? (i.e. comparing IQ test scores, educational background or grades, creativity, street smarts/common sense, personal accomplishments, open mindedness , forward thinking, the way they raise their kids, how likeminded they are to you, potential, etc?)
I typically judge people by how strong they are with the Force.

1. My music taste always changes/evolves, if you ask in a year it'll be a different answer. The last two years or so this has been at the top of my Spotify rotation. I just like melodic songs with good instrumentation, layering of harmonies and such. I think it's overall very well produced.

2. Is the Friday Five a honeypot operation to out our political views? If so nice try.

3. When I was in college I did some part time work at a pizza place, and the first manager there was awful and rude, and I really didn't like it. I also temped doing data entry at some company about 6 or 7 years ago, the job itself wasn't that bad at all but they made you punch a clock to keep track of how much time you used the bathroom. It was demeaning and you could tell the company viewed temps as disposable garbage.

4. Everyone changes based on their surroundings and circumstances. No one is going to be the same at 19 as they are at 39 or 59. Now, I wouldn't turn into some dictator if I came into some money, and I think I'd still be rather frugal and down to earth, but your relationships with people are a product of your surroundings, so I can't just say flat out no.

5. For me it's really about how sharp, quick, and resourceful they are. I know people with PhDs in STEM fields who I wouldn't trust to boil pasta water. I've met people with limited experience of their resumes who are very incisive. I think people in the modern business world tend to overstate emotional intelligence, but I have come around to realizing how smart one comes across all comes down to how someone emotionally regulates and processes that academic/analytical intelligence. Someone with an outstanding grasp of quantum mechanics with no ability to emotionally regulate it and someone who is a pure empath with no booksmarts whatsoever are both defective in their own way. I like people who can bridge the theoretical and practical.

Moving/packing is so damn stressful. I can feel the anxiety building. My anxiety meds are helping but I am firm that increasing the dosage is not an option at least right now.

I'm actually in fantastic shape for the major items thanks to the horrible flood I had a few years ago but it feels like there is so much more to go through and pack.

Any tips on how to break down such a tedious task and handle the increased anxiety are much appreciated.

I do have a standing appointment with my therapist in 2 weeks :)

Not for everyone, but my motto has always been, "When in doubt, pitch it."

I own nothing I can't carry myself.

Another bullshit meeting at work yesterday.

Words were spoken.

Promises made, which aren’t worth a damn because they’ve all been made before.

Sending the good thought.

Take care,

M.

Finished “Founding Partisans”. It was “just ok”.

Onto the next one.

Thanks for the review. The new one looks interesting. I actually don't know that much about Daniel Webster. So, I await your review.
I’ll be snagging this when it comes out, too.

Just keep pressing 0 on every prompt. Or say YES to the do you wanna be a customer prompt. They’ll put an English speaking rep on to get a sale
Sometimes pressing 0 gets you disconnected....

I always get the guy with the massive accent that I can't understand....

Helllooo....my name is called (reads the list).....ummmm. Tyler

Yeah ok Tyler you are Akbar from India..

I don’t even bother in those cases. I just say “sorry i gotta go. Thanks” and hang up. Then I’ll try again and specifically go through prompts as if I’m a new customer.

I remember when i worked at Wayfair, before it was called Wayfair, they brought in a call center from the Philippines. It was awful for the reps in Boston. The Philippines call center would only get calls where customers answered prompts saying they had an item and were looking to finish an order. Which meant I would only get calls of orders the new call center finished and f***ed up. Wayfair did it backwards! Or just, i don’t know, make sure your employees can understand the language your customers are speaking.

1. "I'm Still Standing"- my personal anthem. A song about overcoming and moving on.
2. Putin, #46 & Xi. At the rate these 3 are going we're going to end up with WW3. Hell we may already be in it.
3. I've only ever had one job, insurance agent, so I have no basis for comparison
4. Only in the sense that it would relieve the stress & pressure.
5. Don't you know that the true measure of a person's intelligence is how much they agree with you? ;)

Far too many to mention, never mind select #1. Were there a gun pointed to my head,

2. Who are the worst three public faces in the world today?

1. The guy who just got tagged for $83.3 mill. U.S.
2. A guy called Bibi.
3. An exceptionally talented, ambitious, and calculating pop star who has taken the commodification of her personal life to its logical, ultimately self-immolating extreme. It's all downhill from here, sweetie.

3. What's the worst job you've ever had?

Cashier at Giant Eagle supermarket in Mentor, OH. Don't ask.
4. Would money change you?

"I've been rich, and I've been poor. On the whole, I'd rather be rich."

"There is nothing character-building about being poor."

Money would not change me.

5. How do you personally judge or compare a persons intelligence? All of the above, save perhaps comparing IQ scores.

Self-awareness, authenticity, compassion, intellectual integrity and gratitude.

Wisdom.

1. Far too many for me to say or explain but here's 1 of them

Makes sense to me now as I have insomnia lol but as a kid I always had a hard time falling asleep. One day my Dad decided to put me in the car and drive into Boston (I'm only a few minutes away), so we'd go over the Tobin and he'd tell me to look outside the window and look at all the lights from the tall buildings and listen to the music. He'd ALWAYS play Frank Sinatra. This song would start our drive. It's our special song. If it's played at weddings or birthdays or anywhere, we look at each other, Dad puts his hands out and we dance to it. It's my future daddy/daughter wedding dance song. It means so much to me. And I would always fall asleep on these rides which accomplished the idea, but I'd wake up when we'd pull into the driveway and I'd pretend to sleep so he'd carry me in lol. We did that for so many years. One of my special memories and a song that holds so much of that and more.

2. Not gonna fall for this question lol Nope. Not gonna fall for it! 😂

3. I once nannied for someone and their 4...yes 4 year old child liked to put their hands in their diaper and smear it on the walls.... I wasn't told this prior to accepting the job. I was told after I did the job that they purposely dont tell people they hire to watch the child about this issue because most people would decline. WELL, they were right. It was awful. Needless to say, I declined to be a full time nanny after that.

4. No. It would change my lifestyle in a sense that my parents would want for nothing and not have to worry about money. But I don't think it would change who I am as a person. I have a good head on my shoulders.

5. How they treat others. I don't care if you have the world's highest IQ. Rich. Or are well liked by lots of people. If you are an asshole to others, I will look at you a certain way. I try not to judge others as best as I can. If you are intolerant of other people's different beliefs or can't respect someone if they think differently than you, I think that tells me that you lack respect. And for me? Respect goes a LONG way. How you treat animals, the elderly, children, etc also will show me who you are. I've seen so many "intelligent" people act like complete jerkoffs. So intelligence or perceived intelligence means nothing to me if you are an ass.

So....the lead in those Stanley Cups...eh?

And Yeti is made the same way. 😩

I think I'll be switching to Hydroflask. No lead in those.

Can't be too careful.

I love learning about all of you a heck of a lot more than I like talking about myself, that’s all :)

1. Not only do we want to learn what your favourite song is - but we want you to explain why it's your favourite.

I’m going to go with Somewhere Over The Rainbow - a song that’s deeply meaningful for my dad and I.

2. Who are the worst three public faces in the world today?

Donald Trump is among the very worst “human beings” (I don’t really consider him human tbh) that has ever been born.

I agree with all the Putin nominations as well.

Trump can have two of my three nominations.

3. What's the worst job you've ever had?

I worked a 3am-3pm shift running a glue press that would apply the backing onto batt insulation. That ranks. Also my dad’s steel factory - it was literally no different than being in prison.

4. Would money change you?

Of course it would. I feel like a lot of you equate change to your moral fabric, but change takes many forms. It would drastically change me. But I’d retain my core.

5. How do you personally judge or compare a persons intelligence? (i.e. comparing IQ test scores, educational background or grades, creativity, street smarts/common sense, personal accomplishments, open mindedness , forward thinking, the way they raise their kids, how likeminded they are to you, potential, etc?)

Right or wrong, if you’re on the wrong side of the social justice/equality spectrum, you’ll never be more than a slack-jawed moron to me. Beyond that, intelligence (as you’ve all pointed out) manifests in myriad ways.

1. Not only do we want to learn what your favourite song is - but we want you to explain why it's your favourite.

So hard to choose just one, and a lot of it depends on my mood etc., but a song that I will always love is Spirit of Radio by Rush, probably because I love the technical aspects of the band's music and I am especially in awe of Geddy Lee's ability to sing and play bass at the same time.

2. Who are the worst three public faces in the world today?

Oof...so many to choose from. I'll go with many politicians, most social media influencers and those who run Ticketmaster.

3. What's the worst job you've ever had?

I am a teacher and I love my job, but I have done different things over the summers; the worst was commercial painting and basement cleanup. Dirty, messy, heavy lifting etc., and nothing worse than riding home on the T with paint in my hair. BUT, it definitely made me appreciate school starting up in September!

4. Would money change you?

I would like to think that it wouldn't as financially I have everything I need, and much of what I want, but I suppose it would cut down on my stress and allow me to be more generous to others.

5. How do you personally judge or compare a persons intelligence? Great question! Obviously intelligence can mean a lot of different things, but I think compassion, common sense and the ability to "read the room" in situations are what I see as intelligence.

My Mom played the organ at a small church for 49 years and always threatened to play "Somewhere over the Rainbow" when she retired. At 80 she played her last church service and played a beautiful rendition of "Over the Rainbow" . The choir sang it at her memorial service and Yeah...I cried
