God's honest truth; my 9th-grade Spanish teacher actually did this. Felt bad for her, but the "cool" part was, the guy that was our sub (for nearly two months) was a really cool older guy who had spent quite a few years (first as a Christian missionary, and later a mercenary (!!) down in Nicarauga and El Salvador during all the Sandinista-stuff in the early-80s...he had quite a few VERY interesting stories...

Anyway, my contribution:

I like Wells Fargo. I've used a few banks and they always have given me the best service - by far. However my credit card is through Citi. They have the best rewards programs.

Serious question...sort of.

What bank(s) would you suggest to someone who is opening a checking and/or savings account for the very first time? And why?

A local credit union. **** banks. Credit unions are non profit so they give you better interest rates, better loan rates, better customer service, and they generally try to sell you less things than traditional banks.
Another perk is that you can use any other credit union atm without being charged a fee. You can also use the ATM at any 7 11

I use Wescom

So I'm guessing San Diego County Credit Union would be a good one...right?

Check Yelp but credit unions are generally very good. And they dropped their membership requirements years ago and will pretty much take anybody now.

And like I said in the other post if you're in OC or LA you can use an ATM at any other credit union or 711

Yeah. Been with NFCU forever (military families know what it is), but the only reason I stick to it is because everyone else in my family uses it.

A regular bank is going to work the exact same way, except they will charge you fees whenever possible and fees for things like cashiers checks etc, will be higher.

a bank like Chase might come out with something like the deposit with your smartphone a little earlier, but a credit union will have it like 2 weeks later

Interesting. Though I can do without rewards programs because I'm not really big on vacations or other gimmicks.

Not a gimmick. It's money back on money you'd already be spending. All my business and personal expenses are paid for with a Citi Card. Every expense I can put on that card, I put on it. I already have the money set aside for it, so why wouldn't I? It's easier to track expenditures and I'm rewarded for money I spend. I get thousands of dollars back a year from the bills I pay. I get gas gift cards, home gift cards, apparel gift cards, etc. If you're already spending the money, why not get some back? I just got nearly $1000 in Lowe's gift cards back from my business expenses.
