OT: Off-Topic, again.

they are canceling school in Niagara Falls because it’s too cold. Yes, too cold in Niagara Falls.
I think that's best. I know it seems strange for northerners but weather related closures probably save a few lives.

Gas at "my" Thornton's was $2.79. Last week it was $2.67. It just jumps around and I try to time my driving to get the sale weeks.

I've been pleasantly surprised with our local school district, They've cancelled 4-5 times already this winter, once for cold temperatures. It helps now that every kid has a school issued chromebook and they have to do online classes when school is cancelled. It depends on how much notice the teachers have, they either do it fully on their own with lessons that the teachers have loaded up, or they will do a zoom class. Plus there are no makeup days at the end of the year thanks to this setup.

That would suck if you were the kid. The best part of snow days is not having school

Most gas stations have lower prices on Monday and/or Tuesday and increase it on Thursday morning at 10 AM local time.

I will guess that is supply and demand. People will fill up before a weekend trip.

That doesn't mean that prices don't go up for holidays or if terrorists in Nigeria blow up a pipeline and cause a change in the world market for oil.

I hate this. It makes it far too easy to cancel class and then the parents have to both scramble for childcare and be the teacher for the day. Our school system has cancelled several days where there was really no problem, basically just to get a long weekend. It's a free day off for them since they don't have to make it up at the end of the year. Used to be if they would be more circumspect about canceling because every missed day was made up in the spring

See above. It sucks worse for the parents

Best workaround I'm aware of is going back to having extended families together. But given my personal biases towards that sort of thing that may very well be me going "I know what the solution is! Extended families! What was your problem again?"

Alas, my wife and I are both only children and our elderly mothers are too frail to watch our autistic son

My solution is I just use up most of my vacation days every year on kids sports/sickness/school days/whatever. Because with kids I can't afford vacationy vacations anyway, so... :dunno:

Certainly child care is a problem. Even the usual methods often don't work when weather is too bad for travel. However, I also know there are parents who aren't as conscientious as you are regarding what they'd be wearing when waiting for the bus. When I taught PreK and we never closed for weather I remember a kid whose dad would just let her wear whatever. It was 4 degrees outside and she wore summer shorts and shirt and a pair of Jellies. No coat. Granted he was not the primary caregiver and a pushover but he allowed the 4 year old to make that decision! "No school" would have kept her home, though honestly I can't be sure he wouldn't have sent her out to play in that, you can't fix stupid, but if even one kid is spared frostbite due to a stupid parent I'm "for" that.

Total shot in the dark, but was anyone here in Savannah over the weekend? Ran into someone wearing a Preds jersey on River Street as she was getting off a tour bus or something.

One of my friends moved to Savannah about 15 years ago. She is still a Preds fan and probably has plenty of gear. If she was approximately 4 ft 10 inches tall it could be her.

I needed gas yesterday. It was down to $2.52 at Sam's Club.
I saw it for $2.34 on my way to the arena tonight at the 7-11. It's higher than that at "my" Thorntons, $2.59, so I'll wait a couple of days and see if it gets lower there, too. I have a quarter tank so I'm in no hurry.

I only had to mow into early October here and just recently started again about two weeks ago which is very nice, much less mowing than in Murfreesboro. In fact we just got green back on the trees here last week. We came down to TN and KY twice in the last two months and noticed a very distinct difference in foliage as soon as we were on the other side of Indianapolis.

But here's the thing, I had this feeling that I was noticing my neighbor (sweet old lady) would come out and mow her yard within an hour or two of me finishing mine. So I started paying attention to it, and sure enough, every time I mow, it's followed up by her mowing shortly after.

Obviously there's no harm in this matter, it's just kind of amusing to me now. If anything I wonder if she doesn't have a good sense of when her yard needs to be mowed and is just following my cue? I'll take it either way because the neighbor on the other side hasn't mowed a single time in the nine months I've been here!

I had a neighbor like that once. They would mow, two days later I would mow and as soon as I got to my back yard they would start mowing again.
