Watchin the SJ-Florida game, and Smith just made it 2-1 by being the first to locate a deflected shot off the glass. When I first saw it, though, I thought the dman shot it wide on purpose, leading to a brilliant assist, and that got me wondering- why don’t they do that more? A similar goal was scored against the Sabres 2 nights back.

Basically- we see so many shots blasted into shinpads, when bank shots to forwards at the front of the net are always open. We saw a trend with players trying for a corner bank a few years ago, but I’m thinking of almost a QB read option- dman can either 1) shoot or 2) just aim at an angle where it’s gonna bounce roughly to where your dude is.

I know I simplify it a bit, lack of time/set-up is a thing, but I’m curious if anyone else thinks there’s room to explore here. The shot meant for a tip has become big in the modern game, feels like someone will apply that to boards as well.

Definitely felt like a bigger trend a few years ago. Probably some combo of any shot on net has a chance and every building being so wildly different lowers the usage of it.

Probably because it's a lower-percentage play that more likely results in 50/50 loss of possession while not even recording a shot on net.

IMO the likeliest scenario for this play setup is:
  • Blue player A shoots it from the point intending to rebound off the glass/boards;
  • Blue players B/C/D deeper in the zone recognize the play but;
  • Red players A/B/C are playing adequate defence and react to the play and the puck is in nobody's possession so it's just a 50/50 battle and the puck could end up anywhere; also, a Red player could just swat it away with their hands whereas the Blue player would be looking for the puck to return to the ice or at least avoid an illegal high-stick play.
Instead of:
  • Blue player A shoots it low towards the net;
  • Blue players B/C are nearby the net and are looking for rebounds/tip-in opportunities;
  • Red players A/B/C play adequate defence and react to the play but the puck is at least being directed towards Blue players or could even deflect off a Red player.
TL;DR not crazy risky to try the shot-pass off the end boards or glass but retaining puck possession seems far less likely. If replicable results were attainable it would be a standard playbook entry.
