i’m not sure why san jose gives a second round pick to take on that rielly contract .

Because Rielly is still a good OFD despite being a horribly flawed player plus they're also getting out of Goodrow's deal.

I think fans exaggerate how bad Rielly is. He's a pure OFD who offers solid value if used in the right role.

I was responding to an idea of a 3rd team being the one to walk away with Robertson while Dallas gets Larkin. If Dallas will do that, Id rather Detroit keep Robertson as opposed to bringing a 3rd team in. Id rather Robertson than Nazar/Lardis/1st.

If Dallas won't do it, all the power to them. I won't tell you guys how to run your team  The merits would be:
- Building strength down the middle. Many people in hockey believe strong centers are the best way to build a winner. Id imagine Jim Nill who saw a team win with yzerman/Fedorov/Larionov, and datsyuk/zetterberg/Filpulla buys into this thinking. Not saying he'd do it, but I think he values being elite down the middle.
- Cost control. Saving 4-6M on Larkin vs Robertson can allow them to juice their roster else where.
Dallas in not going to move Robertson and just get Larkin and a $6 million per year savings. IF that was presented by Detroit they would hear a dial tone with a quickness.

You have no idea how nice it was for a neutral fan base to have a very rationale take on this.

I'll also just add that Rielly/Berube were a terrible fit together so it likely just made things look worse.

Plus everyone clowned on Marner...Rielly probably goes somewhere else and turns into Bobby Orr :)

Huh? Dallas gets Larkin for Robertson? That is a HORRIBLE deal for Dallas!
Larkin is signed and Robertson needs a new deal and center versus wing. Robertson is the better player but I don't think it's horrible. If Dallas could have gotten a better return than Larkin don't you think they would have done that by now? There is clearly some sort of disconnect with the player and team and yet he's still there. I don't think teams are lining up to pay Robertson what he wants and give Dallas a tip top return for him.

Because they can't afford to retain Robertson if he wants $14 million a year and Larkin is as good of a player as you'd get back in a deal for Robertson.

Dallas should be getting a + with Larkin, but Robertson for Larkin+ as a base makes a lot of sense for Dallas.
Ehhh, maybe a small +, but that Larkin contract definitely has value for a team like DAL, as does Larkin's ability to play C. Love Robertson, but there is a big difference between 13-14M and 8.7.

Robertson, as good as he is, doesn't help DET if they don't have any top 6 C's, either.

I think a team like SEA would love to snag someone like Robertson.

Does EK65
  1. Stay in Pittsburgh and goes UFA next year
  2. Re-sign in Pittsburgh 2-4 years
  3. Get traded straight up
  4. Get traded 50% retained
  5. Sign and trade

I think EK gets re-signed to a short term deal. Idk why, but he seems to really enjoy playing for the Penguins and doesn't appear to want to leave.

He might go cup chasing in the future but I think he's happy to stay in Pittsburgh with Crosby for the short term.

I am sure Dallas has received multiple inquires and offers from other teams offering more value than Larkin. Perhaps what was offered doesn't move the needle. Larkin doesn't help us like people think her does. Offense is not our problem defense is. We need a RHD who is far above average if at all possible.

That's fair. Needs and value are often at odds. I'm not sure they've turned down better single player offers than Larkin. Maybe something with pieces and parts that has a bit more value in aggregate. We will see. Dallas can add a UFA RHD like Trouba or Klingberg in the summer to cover that position in the short term. I don't see an RFA equivalent to Robertson in the RHD this cycle.

Offense will be our problem if we trade Robo and no scoring is coming back. Remember how shitty our scoring is 5 v 5. We were 2nd in goals against per game this past season and Oettinger definitely didn’t have a Vezina season lol

I predict people are going to be disappointed in the lack of big moves this summer.

There will always be a handful that are big and come out of nowhere. But I don't think its going to be as active as people seem to think it will.

Of course its going to drop but i think with Duchene, Hintz (If he can stay healthy), Johnston, Rantanen, Bourque (If he is not traded) and Hryckowian we will be ok.
