Off Season Thread 2025

ROR probably should have been moved at this last trade deadline because the prices teams were paying was insane. The odds you catch a market that good again this coming year are pretty slim.

You had the perfect mix of good teams trying to get better and lots of teams that weren't out of it yet. Those teams not out of it weren't really spending big but what they weren't doing was selling guys, making the market for those few available go much higher.

Just throwing this out there.

I’m curious.. why is promoting this guy such a theme here. It seems like the posts are thirsty for traction but it never quite gets going each time this comes up. What other orgs have successfully promoted their minor league head coach? Genuinely interested in learning that

He’s a better coach than the last two the Preds have put behind the bench.

Jon Cooper is the one I'm aware of but I'm sure there are others that have done well and others that have failed.

I mean after this season it definitely belongs in the ‘What can it hurt’ file, just didn’t know if it was based on historical models. J Cooper is a good example for sure (so thanks for that one @Predsanddead24 )
Generally you don't see it because they tend to get hired quick. Honestly we've been pretty fortunate to have Taylor still around. I can't figure out if he just doesn't want to be an assistant in the NHL or if he just hasn't found the right fit yet.

Yeah it’s interesting that Taylor is the longest tenured coach in the AHL. Tough to know whether that’s because he’s passed up other opportunities or if he just isn’t getting interest from other teams.

As far as I know the only teams that have looked at him are the Preds when they went with Brunette and Toronto as an assistant. I have a feeling that may change this summer though. I just have a bad feeling he's gone.

I feel like we've heard about Taylor getting interviews to move to the NHL... except as an Assistant Coach first, right? I can see it's a tough call for him... stay Head in Milwaukee or go somewhere else to just be an Assistant? But that lack of any NHL experience, given he a) didn't play in the NHL, b) hasn't actually gone all the way to a Championship in the AHL either, probably has placed that dilemna in front of him.

I think a lot of NHL coaches have started in the AHL. Or spent time coaching in the AHL at least. But the path often does involve going from AHL Head to NHL Asst THEN to NHL Head. Ryan Huska went that route in Calgary. Dean Evason has been all over the place including stints in AHL as we well know. Some guys get poached as AHL Heads in one organization to NHL Heads in a different one (Kris Knoblauch in Edmonton from Rangers farm team. Or Spencer Carbery in Washington started in Hershey, got poached to Asst in Toronto, but then came home to be head in Washington. Or similar for Travis Green from Utica to Vancouver the first go-round. But as noted Bednar was promoted direct in Colorado.

Anyway, all to say, there isn't really a set path, except to say I think Karl Taylor ought to be getting close to the threshold where he will get to make another decision sometime in the not-too-distant future? Perhaps jumping to another NHL organization if he wants to as an Assistant. Or perhaps for personal reasons he's more comfortable in just continuing to bide his time in Milwaukee? Hopefully that continues as long as possible, since he seems to be doing such a good job there.

The Caps with Carbery, although he stopped off with the Leafs as an assistant in between.

What impresses me about Taylor is he keeps winning even with massive roster changes. Tells me whatever his system is, it's pretty good and that he's capable of adapting to different circumstances

Obviously he has the previous NHL pedigree too but Dan Bylsma is a recent example of a guy who got promoted from the AHL affiliate to the NHL and he's already fired again. As far as current AHL coaches it would seem like Todd Nelson from the Hershey Bears would be to obvious candidate to get an NHL gig given his success there. Although I don't really follow the AHL outside of keeping an eye on the Ads so it's tough to make judgements on coaches since I don't know the relative strength of their rosters, but still AHL success alone doesn't seem to be enough to get an NHL gig. For me personally I think there's probably some aspect of overrating Taylor because he's our guy just like its easy to overrate our prospects.

Found this quote from Marchand interesting. I know we've had lots of discussions about whether or not Josi should be the captain, but I've always felt like in the NHL if you're relying on your captain for leadership than you have a problem. Basically I think any leadership problems we see out of Josi are mainly a symptom of the entire culture of our organization which despite the lip service is still to value loyalty over success. It's interesting to me that the best period in our franchise's history was when we made hard decisions (e.g. moving on from Trotz, trading Weber) even if they were tough on a personal relationship level. I just can't see us being that level of cutthroat anymore (e.g. giving O'Reilly a pseudo-NMC) and it's going to continue to harm us.

I suppose it's easier for these kinds of comments to stick when a team is winning big like the Panthers are. Feels like lots of teams might SAY this sort of thing, except... who knows where the chickens and eggs really are? :dunno:

Hopefully he was becoming convinced Molendyk is ready for the NHL next year
I just can't see it. I'm watching Molendyk in the Memorial Cup. He's good, but he's not the kind of guy who plays D in the NHL at 20. We have sort of over-hyped him here based on a few rookie camp reports, but I think we better slow our roll on him a little bit? :dunno:

He's not more ready for the NHL than Wilsby or Stastney, anyway, even if he hopefully has higher upside.

I mean, I would be all for the Preds at this point in the franchise downturn playing kids above their level and basically just "throwing them to the wolves", even if they're not traditionally "ready". But I don't see it happening. Molendyk isn't ready under any "normal" criteria. Bumping him up ahead of schedule isn't something I can imagine the Preds doing. :dunno:

You're absolutely correct about nashvilles way of over cooking prospects and the same is gonna happen with molendyk. Unfortunately if he was on more than half of any other teams in the nhl he would probably get a spot to prove himself on the nhl level this year. Not playing our youth over vets have crippled this franchise. If I'm a young prospect nashville would the last place I'd hope to get drafted by
