Watching Marner suck this much this long and people are just lining up for the 13-15M.

But then cry about 6-7M guys who put up 50 pts. Guys you need to math better.

How GM Samsonov would fill in some of these blanks:

Geekie — Lindholm — Pastrnak
Zacha — Mittelstadt — ?????
????? — Poitras — Lysell
XXXX — Minten — Kastelic

XXXX = Beecher, Khusnutdinov, Lauko

Lohrei — McAvoy
Lindholm — ?????
Zadorov — Peeke
Wotherspoon

Note, I’m not addressing free agency. Just what we have in-house.

Same as Tampa, he 21 Isles, the Blues in 19, the Bruins rarely have an answer for anything. 70's habs, 80's oilers, 90's Pens, 90's Devils, early 00's Habs....Thank God for 2011 and playing the Leafs in 4 first rounds. .

Dammit Lou I was having a good day till I read that. Thanks for bumming me out.

I mean he’s been at or more than a ppg for like 7 straight seasons and 2 of the last 3 playoffs, idk if we have been “watching Marner suck this much this long” at all

Yeah we have. Maybe the issue is that we don't tune into all the Leafs games, we just see him wilt like a flower against Boston in the playoffs and now again against FLA. Think his best performance most of us would have seen was in his first playoff series against Boston, what was that like 6/7 years ago?

Yeah, I get people not wanting him on the Bruins but he doesn't suck or anywhere close to it. He'd be the second best forward on our team by a long mile if he signed here.

He’s honestly a better 2 way player than Pasta is

A Sweeney play for Marner strengthens the Bruins offense and RW spot, hurts Toronto, and improves the quality of the 26 Toronto pick

Sweeney and Donskov got to know him at 4 Nationx

The Leafs may circle back though - Taveras will be off books but interesting next 6 weeks watching this

Guys it isn't MARNER, it's the price tag (and someone will be dumb enough to do 13-15).

Anyone lining up to give this guy the bag after they are essentially chasing him from Toronto, isn't paying attention.

The goal is to win the cup. This young man isn't a piece you can reliably use to do that. And it's to the point that Leaf fans are ok seeing him walk for literally nothing. Ponder that.

Who was the last superstar impact guy that people were ok seeing walk for free? An OLD Marchy just badly outplayed him! Particularly in the biggest games.

Talk about damning with faint praise.

Not my intention at all. It isn't like our best forward currently is mediocre, so I am not sure how you arrive at that conclusion. Not many players in the league would be the best forward on our team (ymmv on who) but Marner isn't one of them imo. But he's not that far off, either.

The cap is going to be $114m in just 3 years. So a cap hit today that's roughly $8m, is going to be equal to a ~$12m cap hit by the time we make the pick we got for Brad Marchand.

I'm not worried about the money. At all. If this was the last 3 years, the flat cap era, then yeah, it would be a huge problem, but they've already officially announced the cap ceiling for the next 3 years and there is going to be money to spend every summer just based on the cap increases.

The late, great Johnny Gaudreau, Panarin, Tavares, Pietrangelo... Bobrovsky was already a Vezina winner when CLB let him walk to Florida.

Boston did okay signing Savard and Chara when they were allowed to walk away for free too.

I asked who were people OK to see walk for free.

People were livid when Gaudreau, Tavares etc left. LIVID.

They are CHEERING the end of Marner. Think on that.

Here in Boston people were pissed when Eriksson left for free. And Marner isn't getting 20% of that grief if he leaves. They want a do-over on core guys and they will celebrate Mitch leaving. Nobody celebrated Tavares leaving in Long Island...

Is it?

Playoff viewership just SUNK. Recession inbound.

I would not count on those numbers.

Yes, Leafs fans are pretty dumb. We are all aware.

The average fan cannot tolerate Zacha putting up an NHL point for $88,000 a point.

But cannot wait to have Marner put up NHL points for $140,000 a point

Takes all kinds in this world!
Are you entirely sure the first part of that is true?

As sure as you are about the NHL's broadcast rights having some ratings clause that will reduce cap increases in the future?

4D chess.

UFA you Go after the top guns. This year would be Marner. If it doesn’t work go for cheapest value low term options.

Don’t go long term big money for middle class Ehlers/Boeser/etc and punt to next year.

Ideally you go 1y for bests available. You make the playoffs great. You suck, you deal these players at deadline for picks/prospects.

Win-win.

But Bruins will be in playoffs next year. It won’t be a Habs kind of eternal rebuild.

Pasta-McAvoy-Swayman

They will add a top prospect at 7.

They have money.

They will rebound.

Enjoy Bruins fans

I'm still not convinced that moving on from Marner and letting him walk for free is the road the Leafs go down this summer.

This is the richest organization in the NHL. You have to ask yourself.....if they let Marner walk, who are they spending their money on?

Because I think given the choice between Marner and Tavares, I think they take Marner every single time. Matter of fact I think that is one of their big moves this summer, walking away from Tavares.

Let's just put aside the fact the cap is going up next year. If you take the 22 million they gave Marner and Tavares last year and simply hand 13 million to Marner and the rest to Knies (for arguments sake), you still have money to play with.

Their goalies are signed for next year. All 6 D are signed for the next 3 seasons. I can see them exploring a Reilly trade this summer, maybe seek a more mobile D-man in exchange, that might be their other big move to change the core group. Reilly and Tavares out. I don't see them shopping for D in free agency. Not much there anyways.

Free agency itself isn't a whole lot there. I can see them pursuing Marchand and giving him term that other teams won't (see Chris Tanev). Sam Bennett maybe, Ontario native. And your hedging your bet if you let Marner talk to other teams on July 1st to chase other guys you may or may not get. Competition will be fierce with low supply and high demand.

They don't have anything really coming up in the system that might require a big contract, Easton Cowan is about all they have. No 1st rounders the next 3 drafts.

Leafs can afford to keep Marner I'm not sure why they'd let a player like that walk. I also don't think he's in a rush to leave.
