Question with Howard

He obviously stated he is returning to Michigan State (don't think he has a choice because Tampa didn't offer him a contract)

If the Bruins trade for him could they sign him to an ELC and have him compete for a roster spot this year? Or is it pretty unlikely he would back out of his commitment to rejoining college?

It just seems like he has nothing more to gain from returning for his 4th year. Dude just won the Hobey. I think a lot of his issue with Tampa are pretty justifiable.

Yes he could sign with a team if they trade for him. He seems pretty clear he wanted to turn pro and play in the NHL. Maybe it leads to a little bit of bad blood with Michigan St, but I am quite sure the coaches there know where Howard is an what he wants, so they won't be surprised if he gets traded and signed

Have zero interest in Ehlers myself tbh, I just don’t think he’s a winning player. Vanishes in the playoffs.

Knowing this they’re gonna give him 7/56
Heres the thing we all need to start reconsidering "playoff performers" (particularly for Ehlers and Marner) because the Bruins were the 5th worst team in the entire league with the 5th worst goal differential.

We need as much talent as possible to get us back into the playoffs. That mentality is two steps ahead. It's not to anyone's fault. We've made the playoffs for close to the last decade straight and acquiring "playoff performers" has been engrained in us.

We need guys to get us there now and Ehlers fits that bill.

And he’ll score 2 tomorrow night in a 4-3 win.

I’m 99% sure the answer is no……..but because I find many of the rules/guidelines that salary caps are governed by to be stupid, I'll ask anyway…

Aside from years, dollars, NMC, NTC, is there anything a team can add to a contract offer that would make it more enticing?

Like, what if a bunch of money were deferred? Could the player choose to live an a income tax free state in future years, when that money is paid out?

Things like that.

(Also, I'm aware of state tax level differences)

The craziest contract I’ve seen is the Frank Vatrano one, although it’s a little to the left of what you’re describing.

I obviously don't know Howard, but how we got here is he wants a roster spot to play NHL minutes right now and the Lightning just can't offer that to him.

My read is that it seems the player may just be Hell bent into going to College FA and picking where he goes. I would think more than half the league would be interested in this player to the point where they would offer a contract.

However, I do think there is potential for a roster spot for him on the Bruins. It's risky though because you almost have to have an honest conversation with him to know if he likes that situation for you to trade for him. I would only make a trade offer if I was absolutely certain the player wanted to come to Boston.

It seems like a messy situation, but if it can work out between both parties I think it would be a good fit.
How could you have a conversation with him at this point? Wouldn't that be tampering?
