If he’s a real difference maker, and it sounds like neither you or I have watched him outside of highlights, he wouldn’t be available for Rossi whom we both agree is not a difference maker

Better off using Rossi + Brodin to go big game hunting. Peterka is a tier or two below the guys I hope Guerin targets.
But based off previous comments, it seems we disagree on what the team needs. You prefer scoring depth, I want a 1C.

Matthews, EP, Barzal, Tage etc.
Depth issues easier to solve than lack of starpower.
Decent chance one of those guys is available. Hate to lose out on them because we used our best assets on a Peterka
Half the guys you listed are wingers and the other two (Matthews/EP) are likely not available.
Rossi is not our best asset. Neither is Brodin. Both together are not returning a Matthews type player.

Barzal only played wing because he gelled with Horvat. He’s been a C vast majority of his career. Tage is also very capable of playing C and has for long stretches. These aren’t guys like Boldy or Mojo who just occasionally are thrown at C. Pretty disingenuous to say they are wingers.
Any outgoing deal for a big fish is likely involving Rossi. Thats quite clear at this point.
1Cs never really hit the market. There is smoke with a few of them right now. We have an aggressive GM who has been in purgatory for 5 years. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that we go after one of these guys
Thompson and Barzal play wing because they cannot win faceoffs. Look at their numbers. They make Rossi look good in the dot.
I’m down for targeting Thompson, but if they idea is so he can play 1C… Not what we need there.

Exactly. I get that Guerin likes the bigger boys and that none of his centers can win a faceoff.
But it makes so little sense to trade an RFA with room to improve (from 60 points!). Find a way to bridge him and give him a real chance to produce. If Yurov is somehow making Rossi expendable then you find a dancing partner, otherwise... magic beans.
Still would be massive upgrades on anything we have and a better target than Peterka. Beggars can’t be choosers, and I’m hoping our FO is out there begging for a 1C because that moves the needle a lot more than an RFA winger who plays pond hockey

I understand Matthews is a really good player and would cost quite a bit to trade for, but in a highly hypothetical scenario where Toronto is trading Matthews, the team acquiring him is looking to contend for a Cup. Why would a contending team trade their 1D away? They would be looking to add Matthews to the core featuring the 1D and the rest.
Look at what Vegas traded for Eichel. Look at what Carolina and Dallas traded for Rantanen. It wouldn't be Faber going the other way. Based on those deals it probably wouldn't even be Boldy going the other way. For Pettersson, Thompson or Barzal it definitely wouldn't be Faber or Boldy going the other way.
Rossi is the best asset we have that would realistically be moved for a big time name. Kaprizov, Boldy, Faber are the core that the big time name would be added to.
I don’t get the Peterka hate vs Thompson infatuation. The difference between the two is 10 points over the last two seasons combined. Peterka is 4 years younger.

It's because Thompson had that one outlier season three years ago that people cling to, and they think he's a center
Matthews doesn’t have the serious health concerns that Eichel had nor the expiring contract that Rantanen had. Toronto has no reason to trade him short of something they actually want.
I don’t view EP/Thompson/Barzal as legitimate solutions to our 1C problem.
If Rossi is our best asset, we are not pulling any big time names. Just saying.
Thompson has about the most atypical development path in the league, so this a completely null point.
I don’t hate Peterka, I think he actually makes a lot of sense in a hockey trade for Rossi***. Especially in tandem with Nelson signing. But I’m guessing and hoping that Guerin is going after bigger names. If there is a chance EP or Matthews is available, you have to do everything you can to get them. Complete game-changers.
As for Barzal & Thompson, they aren’t complete game changers but they offer unique skillsets we don’t have (speedy playmaking and a RHS sniper).
There are other Cs that may be available too. But they are less sexy. Guys like Cirelli, Danault, McLeod, Etc.
Guerin has made it clear he wants another C who can handle big minutes. That means Nelson or a trade.
***I think we add in a Rossi for Peterka deal. Not much, but maybe a 2nd or B prospect or two.

No and I don't think he's available at all, I'm talking about a hypothetical scenario where he is made available and/or doesn't want to be there anymore, like Eichel. And yeah, Eichel had some questions about health, but no one who was trying to trade for him was deterred by those questions. They were trading for him because they thought he'd be exactly what Vegas got.
Realistically though, looking at Pettersson, Thompson or Barzal, Rossi gets us into those discussions pretty easily. Obviously there will be a +, but we're in those discussions. Whether we want to be in those discussions or not is a different story.
If you had Matthews on your team, what package are you accepting back that is built around Rossi as the main piece? To me, it's a non-starter. I would want Eriksson Ek as the primary piece and then another 2-3 solid pieces.
Thompson is the most appealing of those guys. If we can get him for Rossi+, we should be all over that. Doesn't solve our center problem but sure does solve our goal scoring right shot forward problem.

I'm looking at fit with Kaprizov before I'm looking at face-offs for any potential #1C. That's why Barzal has been on my radar.
