I like Gilbert, I just wish he had a physical edge to his game. Would be a good short term solution.

I'm pretty confused on where SY is trying to go with this team next season. We drop a big name high point scoring center but don't plan on picking anyone notable up for his replacement and with the extra cap space we don't try to fix our weakest attribute, the blue line? We going for another high draft pick in 2014?

He's just saying we won't get ourselves back into cap trouble after just getting out with Vinny. Don't expect Yzerman to go after the big fish and throw money around. We're not going to see another Carle like deal, but if the price is right, he'll strike.

Carlo Colaiacovo bought out. Do we want him?

No. However, he is the focal point of possibly the best hockey GIF ever...and no discussion about him is complete without:

Why are people on the main boards talking about Seguin anyway...doesn't he have a NTC? (per Capgeek)

There is no way he can have a NTC, he doesn't hit the age requirement. Stamkos's NTC doesn't kick in for a couple more years as well.

I'm not even sure if Seguin is signed past next season?? I'll have to check

Noticed nobody's mentioned Nathan Horton. As much as I dislike him....he says he wants to play where it's warm.

Horton's a very valuable player and would be a welcome addition to most teams. We'd need a pretty steep warm weather discount, though, I would think. But every team, this one certainly included, could use a big, mean guy who doesn't look out of place on a scoring line. Drouin-Stamkos-Horton, for instance, would be a line nobody would want anything to do with for years to come.

Also, I know he has played center before, is it something he's actually capable of? I know the premise of filling Vinny's spot with that ugly son of a gun isn't palatable, but on-ice he'd bring a lot.

Sorry for all the blasphemy :)

to highlight some things
  • Has spoken to Cooper about next captain. A decision will be made around training camp
  • Will explore what trades can be made
  • Spent the day calling agents of players he's interested in to get a feeling for what the price may be
  • "Our biggest moves will comes through within" - moving players up from Syracuse

Addressing the media Wednesday morning, Chiarelli said he's working on a couple of trades and will be interviewing free agents between now and July 5. The Bruins are up against the salary cap and are believed to be shopping the likes of Rich Peverley and Chris Kelly in an attempt to free up some space.

If true, I would definitely be interested in acquiring Kelly for our third line.

I think a good target for our #2 center would be Mikhail Grabovski. He's one of the better 2nd line centers in the league and he could be acquired for a reasonable price if Toronto decides to sign or trade for an upgrade. His contract is a little tough to take on, but it wouldn't be much more than what we would have to pay for the likes of Ribeiro, Weiss, Bozak, etc.

Why not? He's incredibly underrated on these boards. He's a puck hound, he's a good back-checker and he's very skilled. The only downfall is his contract, which isn't that bad when you look at other contracts around the league. He was a monster in the playoffs, I'm a big fan of his game.

Living in Toronto and watching him play every other night, I can say with the utmost confidence that I want nothing to do with him. There's a reason why he fell in the depth chart behind Kadri and Bozak; he's just not a top two line centerman on a good team and is unfortunately being paid as one. Prototypical player who has good skills but is awful at using his teammates - the only way he could play a top 6 role on a good team is if he was shifted to the wing and we already have a logjam there.

Trading for Grabo would be one of the absolute worst ways to tie up the breathing room we just gained from buying-out Vinny. Even if you take the contract away, he would not be centering one of the first two lines in Toronto; simply put, he's just not good enough.

No offense, but when you go searching the forums and the one player that the fans from that team want to get rid of, then there's got to be something wrong with him. I've seen Grabo play also, and I'm not impressed especially for what we can get for his contract.
