Oddity: Nazar's shootout attempt (originally called no goal) ruled a goal after the next Hab already shot

That's my problem, what is the rule? And if there isn't one the NHL needs to release a statement explaining what and why.

It isn't that hard

The rules are specific about the re-setting of clocks when an undetected goal is identified during live play.

There is no rule saying that a shootout must be re-set due to an undetected goal, or that the goal must be detected within a specific timeframe. As far as I can tell, people are just making that up.

What I don't understand is don't refs retrieve the puck after a shootout attempt. What did they think happened to the puck?
I guess the refs felt the puck went over the glass and out of the rink.

I can't find it either, that's why I want an explanation from the league. As a Habs fan that goal should count I just want clarity in the ruling.

The referees should be fired. They just assumed the puck went over the netting into the crowd? They sure as hell didn't see it go out. Their job is to see the puck. If they don't see the puck, they need to investigate by replay. Nazar didn't see it but he was skating by, probably thought he lost sight of it, and it's not his job.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the NHL's rule is on the matter. Or did they just make it up on the spot?

I mean, it's good it was called a goal, as it was a goal, but what a mess.

They should have done their jobs in the first place (either called it no goal because he lost the puck or called it a goal) but they didn't.

I think we all agree on that. The fact that this was missed is bizarre.

There is no way they can go back in time and change the result of a previous shot after it has happened. It's bush league and against the rules of the sport (let alone common sense).

The rules say the play has to be reivewed before it restarts. They f***ed up bigly, per usual.

The rules don’t say that. The concept of resetting the play due to a detected goal has entirely to do with resumption of play. Shootouts are not a timed play. There is no “resumption of play” in the shootout.

Furthermore, the idea of delaying a faceoff during the course of a review doesn’t exist in the shootout. That rule exists so that you don’t have a review going on while other things (goals, penalties) are accumulating, and then having to reverse everything. This dynamic doesn’t exist at all when there’s no clock.

this thread has so much interest it overshadows a fantastic Demidov game. Maybe the league should do away with the shootout?
