Caps are having a great regular season, what does adding a perennial playoff choker do for them exactly? But I also agree that it's lopsided in value towards the Caps.

I think there was maybe 1 caps fan interested in this deal when it was proposed last month without the 1st rounder
It's me. I would do it, especially if the NYR 25 1st is coming back. I think they're legit enough that they have a real chance at making the playoffs and this being more than "found money." That being said there's 0 chance the FO does and I understand why.

Also, Rags would need to take back Mangiapane this year for the cap to work but I assume that wouldn't be an issue as he's expiring.

It wouldn't require a 1st on either side.

Panarin @ 50% for Leonard straight up.

Rangers SHOULD do this. They are a team stuck in no-mans-land and if they can move off Panarin for a prospect the caliber of Leonard they should.

The question is the caps. Do they think they are as good as their 1st half record suggests. Are they a team willing to step back from a rebuilding direction and try another 2-3 seasons to win it all?

After looking like Ovi might be done early last season, he's back to doing Ovi things. Strome has taken a massive step forward as has McMicheal. Their off-season pickups have panned out. Maybe they do think bigger and start eyeing another cup.

As I understand, Leonard is committed to play for the Caps as early as his collegiate career is over which is in 2 months at best. They are not going to trade him before they know what he is at an NHL level and honestly after that Forsberg trade they'd be stupid to do otherwise..

There are multiple people in here saying the Rangers trading the guy who is 5th in the entire NHL in points since he became a Ranger, averaging 106 points/82, at 50% making him $5.8M for the next season and a half (a cap hit on par with noted superstars like Tyler Bertuzzi, Tyler Johnson, Alex Kilorn, and the like) for a guy who hasn’t played a single NHL game and isn’t profiling as a superstar but rather a good player, and that the Rangers need to add an unprotected 1st round pick (and possibly even a cap dump from WSH) might not be enough?

I’m not the biggest Panarin fan, but this is absolute lunacy. Leonard, WSH 1st, and a minor cap dump is WAY closer to Panarin at 50% retained. I like Leonard as a prospect, but even some of the most optimistic projections have him at like 70% of Panarin’s average production as a Ranger.

As for the one saying it’d be like Forsberg for Erat 2.0: Forsberg was profiling higher than Leonard at the time, and Erat was well known to be very near the end of his NHL career. Unless you think Panarin has a leg amputated at the end of this season, they aren’t very comparable beyond “good prospect for older player.”

Panarin is a horrible fit for the current iteration of the Capitals. Panarin on the 2012 Capitals (circa Young Guns and No Defense) sure. 2025 Capitals, absolutely not. Tom Wilson might actually kill Panarin on the Capitals and still somehow ruin the Rangers. Less than zero interest.

People look at what the Rangers are currently and say, oh it’s just the wrong recipe. No, it’s the wrong ingredients. Panarin is more a symptom of what’s wrong with the current Rangers than he is a fix for any other team. Good player that made a name as an elite complimentary player to HOFers, those days are done. He’s more Rick Nash and Brad Richards than he is Mark Messier.

Ryan Leonard embodies the culture the Capitals are trying to create. Artemi Panarin embodies the culture the Rangers are trying to eliminate.

The value favors the Capitals and the Rangers wouldn’t do the deal as is. Any attempt to make the deal a better fit fails to acknowledge that the foundation of the deal is not something the Capitals are going to do.

Typical overrating of a prospect at HF.
Typical underrating of the value of elite prospects on an ELC. When was the last time such a high-level prospect was willingly traded on an ELC?

Likely Forsberg for Erat and how did that turn out?

Cap era makes ELC prospects more valuable than an limited term option that further restricts cap space.

Guy hasn't played a single nhl game…who knows if his power forward game at 6’0 will translate very well or not in the NHL.

Nah he's going to be a great player as much as I hate to admit. Caps would be dumb to trade him for a declining asset like Panarin.
Depends if they think they can really win a cup this year with AO. If they are still a top of the standings come the deadline it could get interesting (not that this trade could happen but i could see them going all out at the deadline)
