Confirmed with Link: NYR/VGK: Reilly Smith (50% Retained) for Brendan Brisson and SJS's 2025 3rd Round Pick

Brisson played at Michigan with Power, Beniers, Kent Johnson, Bordeleau, Luke Hughes, etc. I saw a lot of him because of that but also because Eric Ciccolini was on the team. Brisson was not on the level of some of those other guys but showed a lof skill, some really nice skating, and the ability to really rip it. He always played with a lot of energy, too. He was one of those guys who would throw himself into bigger players regularly even if it didn't accomplish much. He just played hard.

I have not followed him since we was drafted and entered the VGK organization so I don't have much info on how he has developed since, other than looking at stats.

65th overall pick plus Brisson is better than just a 2nd so this is fine.

Unless the Rangers are bringing in some big fish any retention on Smith really wouldn't matter. Rangers have plenty of cap space for the rest of the year unless they want to facilitate other deals between other teams by taking on cap in exchange for draft picks.

If the Rangers move on from someone like Kreider which right now seems like the only thing really out there that's possible we'll have even more cap space available.

Is there?

Henderson sucks, but that's an absolutely garbage ass statline for a forward drafted in the 1st round of the National half a decade ago. I haven't watched a single second of this kid in the AHL this year, but there's just no contexto justification that could explain this in my mind, and lead me to believe he can do anything the Show.

Most likely a bust.

That said, you weren't getting any special prospect for rental Reilly Smith, of course.
I haven't watched him at all in Las Vegas or with Henderson (Hartford doesn't really play them ever). So I can't say for sure.

However, the previous year he was second in points per game for the AHL team and had 8 points in 15 NHL games, at age 22. If that same player was in our system we'd probably just be cursing our poor player development (which isn't really something VGK is known for, either...) rather than saying the guy sucks. I'd say we should give him a chance, and that the guy who posted 75 points in his first 110 AHL games is maybe the "real" player.

From: Elite Prospects in his draft year.
The gears are always turning. Brisson skates into pressure to deploy a gravitational pull on the opposition and has the good sense to either quickly dispatch of the puck to a teammate in space or processes his way through it one defender at a time. He's the best problem-solving forward in the draft not named Alexis Lafrienière.
Maybe it’s like a Captain Planet type thing. With their powers combined….

Brisson:
Drafted 29th overall, Son of NHL Agent Pat Brisson. This year for the AHL Henderson Silver Knights Brisson is 3rd in scoring; in 52 games has 19 goals and 19 assists with 42 Penalty minutes.

Strengths: Vision, offensive awareness, playmaking skills, and finishing ability.

  • Big Ten Second All-Star Team (2022)

I'm not terribly jazzed about this.
I don't know that there's much to be jazzed about, but also nothing to NOT be jazzed about - it is what it is - we traded a meh player and got a former late first round pick and an early 3rd. The only way this trade looks bad is if our 2027 2nd ends up being like 33rd OA

Well we got a 3rd anyway.

The player is 23 and struggling in the AHL. 99 times out of 100, that's a non-asset.

So we traded a 2nd and a 5th for a 3rd, it's like... :dunno:

Hopefully he goes the way of Brett Howden.

The 2nd we traded and the 2nd we got will be about 10 spots apart.

And we added a young player who still has potential, played decent in the NHL last year in his 15 games. But has had a poor 45 games this season. Wouldn't be calling him a bust yet.

It's a very fair trade for a 3rd line UFA.

A change of scenery can mean a lot. Vegas is notorious for moving draft picks and prospects. They're a team trying always to be in the now. It might be that Brisson didn't see any road ahead with that organization.

A lot of Rangers fans might say the Rangers don't give their young enough chance but still Lafreniere's 23, Cuylle-22, Rempe 23, Edstrom-24 and Berard-22 and Othmann-21 are getting a good look right now. Schneider's 23, K'Andre and Jones are 24. We have other guys who should be getting a good look in the next year or two--Perreault, Garand, Sykora maybe Laba or Chmelar. The Rangers are developing players. Maybe that would be more encouraging for someone like Brisson.

Not trading for Smith to begin with was always on the table and it's not like people didn't say it at the time.

All told, we received basically nothing to take a draft pick 10-15 spots lower.

It's not a big deal but this wasn't Drury's best work.

not sure what people were expecting for Smith?
A first? lol
At best he was gonna bring back a 2nd. We basically got a high third and a prospect.

Never wanted Smith to begin with but it is what it is. Took a chance on Smith didn't work out. Didn't cost us much
