Now he's all but guaranteed to take over the all-time wins record by an American-born goaltender. I would've loved to see him play his entire career in LA, but I have to say thank you to the Rangers and Benoit Allaire. It's f***ing awesome to see him playing so well. It's even better that he was a Richter and Rangers fan growing up.

Great deal for all involved. The Rangers are getting the last great hockey out of Quick before he calls it a career. God Bless Benoit Alaire. He deserves a banner in the rafters of MSG for all the work he has done turning minor league goaliesninto serviceable NHL backups, serviceable NHL backups into starters, revitalizing dead careers, and turning great goalies into elite allstars.

1 more year to get him to 400 wins and more. I'll be rooting for the Rangers to get Quickie there. I will never forgive them if they don't.
I have no doubt he will get there. When they trade Igor in the off season Quick will be the starter

Meanwhile, LA is looking for a big name goalie with similar stats and playoff experience.

I’m going to take a dissenting view and say I don’t like it.

Why are we in February giving out a raise of 450k to a 38 year old?

He’s a backup too. If he plays a game in the playoffs something has went terribly wrong.

I don’t know why we have to rush to extend him. He’s from the area and grew up a Rangers fan. Seems pretty likely he would’ve taken whatever we’d give him.

Due to his age we don’t know when the bottom is going to fall out. What if his last two months are terrible? After last year I wouldn’t expect it won’t happen to him because he’s had a great career. We know it’s in him.

And that 450k for a team up against the cap could matter a lot at some point. A team with an elite starter is stupid in a salary cap league to be paying anything more than the minimum for a backup.

League minimum will typically get you a guy who isn't guaranteed to be NHL calibre even as a backup. Quick gave a discount on his current deal, this one is more than fair.

He took the minimum this year. Why does a team that has an elite starter need a backup that is guaranteed to be NHL caliber? And what makes you think that Quick is guaranteed to be NHL caliber next season? He wasn't NHL caliber last season.

The value of the deal to the NHL community isn't what matters to the Rangers. They have their own roster to construct. A team like Arizona will never reach the cap and they never have to worry about a few hundred thousand here or there. For a team that does and has Cup aspirations, this was not wise to do at the current time. If on July 1 it's looking like the 450k won't matter, you can do it then. Stupid to do it now.

You’re wildly overreacting. Shesterkin is a 50-55 game starter. That means your backup is playing 25-30 games and that can absolutely make or break a season if your backup is terrible. It also means the team might overplay Shesterkin and wear him out before the playoffs, or if he gets injured the team is screwed. If Quick was a .400 win% goalie this year, the Rangers would be fighting for the playoffs. This deal would make him the 55th highest paid goalie this year. Very few backups are that cheap. And if he’s not NHL caliber next year, the AHL threshold next year is 1.15, so it’s a 125K hit on the big club.

Easy for you to look at this without the full picture. You are concentrated on whether this is good value compared to the average deal. For a team up against the cap every dollar matters. This team played short last season because of the salary cap. That 450k matters and it wasn’t smart to give this out before we knew the rest of the salary cap situation for what amounts to literally the least important player on a roster other than a spare forward and defenseman.

Also, the Rangers are in the playoffs by 18 points right now. Quick has gained 28 points in 21 games. They would need 10 points in 21 games from a backup. That’s essentially an impossible number for an NHL goalie not to gain, especially for a team that has a general playoff roster.

Signing a good asset early means resources can be focused on other things.

It's as simple as I can explain it to you.
